Last summer, I went t France fr a hliday. I was s excited but als a little nervus because my French was nt gd.
One ht afternn, after explring the city, I felt really tired. I wanted t tell my French friend, Claire, “I am a little tired.” I carefully said the wrds I’d learned: “Je suis un pue fatigue.”
But Claire burst ut laughing. My face felt ht. What had I dne wrng? Claire explained, “In French, there are wrds that sund similar but have very different meanings. ‘peu’ means ‘a little,’ but if yu prnunce it differently, it can sund like ‘pue’, which means ‘stinks’ — like smething smells bad. S, instead f saying yu needed a rest, it sunded like yu were saying yu smelled bad and were tired”
This awkward mment was a real eye-pener fr me. It made me realize just hw daunting prnunciatin can be in a freign language. Even small differences in prnunciatin can cmpletely change the meaning f what yu’re trying t say. The same is true in English, fr example, “ship” (a large bat) and “sheep” (a wlly animal) sund very similar, but they mean ttally different things.
Nw, I pay extra attentin t hw wrds sund and what they mean. And if I mix them up again? I’ll just laugh alng. After all, laughing is part f learning — even if it’s a bit stinky smetimes.

Vern says the mass bleaching events in the past few years-and the pssibility f lsing ne f nature’s greatest treasures-were a wake-up call fr the wrld in the wider battle against climate change, which, tgether with the rising sea temperature, is cnsidered the greatest threats t the reef.
Frtunately, earlier this year, the Australian gvernment annunced nearly 400 millin dllars in new funding twards scientific prjects designed t help the reef.
There has been criticism in Australia abut the slw prcess fr the funding. “It wn’t be wasted, thugh,”Vern says. “As scientists will be able t create a srt f seed bank t prtect the species until the climate is gd enugh t rebuild the reef. What the scientists hpe t d is t help nature alng a bit after the big carbn dixide increase is ver and it starts t cme dwn.”
