Climate change is increasingly challenging the wrld f sprts, with rising temperatures and extreme weather cnditins threatening the existence f sprts events glbally. Athletes like triathlete Pragnya Mhan have been frced t relcate their training t cpe with unbearable heat, while thers, including discus thrwer Sam Mattis, face extreme temperatures during cmpetitins. Such cnditins nt nly affect athlete perfrmance but als pse a threat t the cntinued existence f certain sprts.
At the UN climate summit in Baku, experts underlined the urgent need t address climate change’s impact n sprts. Events are being interrupted by unusual weather patterns, as seen in the Paris Olympics, where triathlns were delayed due t water quality issues frm heavy rain. In respnse, sme sprts rganizatins and clubs are beginning t take actin. Sccer clubs have jined frces t reduce emissins and engage fans in climate awareness, emphasizing the rle sprts can play in advcating envirnmental respnsibility. These effrts illustrate the crucial rle that rganized sprts can have in prmting and supprting sustainable practices.
Hwever, large-scale effrts can smetimes seem less impactful due t cnflicting pririties and the financial interests tied t majr sprts events. These factrs hinder real prgress in sprts-related climate advcacy and reveal the cmplexities invlved in cmbining glbal sprts practices with envirnmental initiatives.
Climate change is als increasing the csts assciated with sprts, widening the gap between rich and less rich athletes. As certain regins becme unsuitable fr training due t weather extremes, athletes face increased travel and training expenses, creating a widening sciecnmic divide. T adapt, sprts events are shifting t cler times r new lcatins. Hwever, these measures nly partially address the brader issues. Technlgies like air-cnditined stadiums, used in the Qatar Wrld Cup, prvide temprary relief but are nt sustainable.
As sprts wrestle with climate change, athletes and rganizatins must innvate t reduce their envirnmental ftprint. A jint effrt is essential t make sure sprts can cntinue t bm in a changing wrld, ffering fair pprtunities while prmting sustainability, with an emphasis n lng-term, impactful slutins.

What d yu get when yu paint a pair f eyes n a cw’s rump (臀部)? The answer is that yu’ll get an apprach t scaring predatrs (捕食者) away. This simple trick is called the “i-cw” slutin. The eyes painted n cws’ rumps can trick certain predatrs, such as lins and lepards.
An experiment by Australia and Btswana cmpared hw predatrs reacted t herds that had eye paintings n their rumps, nes that had “xs”, and sme withut any paintings at all. Over a fur-year perid, researchers fund that 15 ut f the 835 unpainted cws were killed by predatrs, 4 f the 543 cws with “xs” died, but every single ne f the 683 animals with eye paintings n their rumps was still alive.
Neil Jrdan, a bilgist in Australia, first came up with the methd. While watching a lin hunting a deer, he nticed smething interesting. “Lins usually mve slwly and quietly t their prey, get clse and jump n them. But when the deer nticed the lin and the lin realized it had been seen, it gave up n the hunt,” he said. Later, he wrked with a lcal farmer t test his idea ver a perid f 10 weeks, and like the mst recent results, all f the cws with painted eyes survived.
Despite the psitive results, Dr. Jrdan says the methd isn’t a sure slutin. He says if farmers painted eyes n the backsides f all their cws, predatrs might finally figure ut that the eyes aren’t real. Therefre, further research shuld be dne t prve whether it is effective.
In spite f this, he’s still hping that the “i-cw” will becme a widely used technique t at least reduce predatr’s attacks. “I think the farmers are just happy with this,” Dr. Jrdan says. “After all, all they need is a paint pt, paint brush and a little bit f artistic talent.”
33. What is “i-cw” slutin intended fr?
A. Prtecting cws frm being attacked.B. Leading predatrs t the farm.
C. Training cws t ntice predatrs.D. Recgnizing cws quickly.
34. What d we knw abut the experiment in paragraph 2?
A. Mst f the unpainted cws were killed.
B. The cws with “eyes” n the rump survived.
C. A small number f cws with “xs” survived.
D. Mre than twenty painted cws were killed.
35. What might be a cause f the “i-cw” slutin’s failing t wrk?
A. Predatrs perceive the tricks.
B. Predatrs get clse t the cws.
C. There is mre than ne predatr.
D. The farmers lack basic painting skills.
36. Why des Dr. Jrdan think that farmers will favr his methd?
A. It is a widely recgnized apprach.B. It fllws their traditinal practice.
C. It is easy and cheap t carry ut.D. It has prved the mst effective.
D
Maths phbia (恐惧症) is lder than yu might think. A hundred years ag, German physicist Felix Auerbach, feeling sad abut the phenmenn and hping t find ways t slve it, wrte a bk called The Fear f Mathematics and Hw t Overcme It. Maths, he said, has s much t cntribute t sciety that slving this fear is a challenge f the highest imprtance.
Why d we fear mathematics? At heart, says Auerbach, it cmes dwn t a fundamental misunderstanding f what maths is. The fear f messing up a calculatin may be real, but the fact that there are many excellent mathematicians wh are terrible at calculatin prves that numeracy (计算能力) and mathematics aren’t the same thing. What, then, is mathematics?
Auerbach says it is three things: a science, a language and an art. Fr me, part f the issue is that we are stuck in the first bx. A fcus cmpletely n technical skills misses the jy and excitement that can cme frm finding patterns and understanding them, frm seeing the true beauty f mathematics. That beauty lies in wnderfully elegant thinking that allws us t understand the infinite (无穷大), explre the amazing symmetries (对称) f art and nature, and delight in the perfectin f an abstract wrld f ideas. As a language, what sets maths apart is the universality (普及性) f its truths — yu can becme fluent wherever yu are frm. If we can be shwn the beauty f mathematics, we will frget t be afraid f the technical details behind it.
Tday’s self-help experts like t pint ut that, physilgically, we experience anxiety the same way we experience excitement. S, if yur heart is racing and yur palms are sweating befre a big event, yu simply have t tell yurself that yu are excited. In the same way, fear can be negative (dread) r psitive (awe). Our gal shuld be t try t mve peple frm a view f mathematics as a cllectin f calculatins whse great difficulty brings dread t an appreciatin f a beautiful language whse cmplexity inspires awe.
A hundred years n, Auerbach’s writing is as relevant as ever. It is a timely reminder that “maths anxiety”, as it is nw called, remains as much a challenge in 21st century as it was in the 20th.
37. Why d we fear mathematics accrding t Auerbach?
A. Because maths cntributes a lt t sciety.B. Because we always mess up a calculatin.
C. Because we misunderstand what maths is.D. Because we lack strategies t learn maths.
38. What is the main idea f paragraph 3?
A. The understanding f mathematics.B. The applicatin f mathematics.
C. The influence f mathematics.D. The intrductin t excellent mathematicians.
39. What is ur aim when dealing with the fear f maths?
A. T encurage peple t read mre bks abut physilgy.
B. T inspire peple t learn and enjy a cmplex freign language.
C. T help peple learn hw t d calculatins crrectly and accurately.
D. T change the view f maths frm calculating t appreciating its beauty.
40. Which f the fllwing is the best title fr the text?
A. Dn’t care abut mathsB. Dn’t fear the numbers
C. Maths phbia is nt a challenge anymreD. Maths anxiety is cmmn at all age levels
