He added that the very presence f wild animals culd cause feedback effects that change the ecsystem’s capacity t absrb, release, r transprt carbn.
In Serengeti, fr instance, the sharp decline in wildebeest (角马) ppulatins during the mid-20th century allwed grass t grw wildly, eventually prmting wildfires that cnsumed 80 percent f the ecsystem annually and led t a net release f carbn dixide int the atmsphere.
