These days, I have been gathering cntributins fr Class Ntes frm my classmates at the Brearley Schl. Seven cntributins have cme in. They are lng r shrt, emtinal r matter-f-fact, and nw my jb will be t cut and select, rephrase and qute, and cunt wrds frm each cntributr- ur entire cllectin will have t add up t n mre than six hundred and fifty wrds.
The tugh part is trying t give mre r less equal space t each f these life accunts, since sme f us tend t relate incidents in great detail while thers are tight-lipped. If nine f us altgether, including me, cntribute ntes, then each nte is allwed a little ver seventy wrds. If anther cntributin cmes in at the last minute, we all g dwn t abut sixty-five. D I cut ut the trip t Csta Rica, r the visit t the nephew in New Jersey? The recent grandchild, brken leg, r Scrabble (拼字游戏) cmpetitin?
Why did I decide I wuld nt mind being a class-ntes agent? I suppse I pursue any piece f writing fr tw main reasns. First, I like the challenge f trying a new frm. As a 65-year-ld lady, I feel tired smetimes, but I’ve never stpped valuing every mment in this jb. Fr me, my classmates are still full f yuthful energy, passin, r disgust r tearful hurt. I’m nt sure I’m naturally gifted at turning all these clrful details int a brief and entertaining accunt. That’s hw I d it — qute their wn wrds as ften as I can.
4. What des the authr need t d with the cntributins?

Built n a mix f firsthand experience and clse engagement with the wrk f scientists, farmers and chefs, Persnalities n the Plate has successfully built a case fr them as beings that deserve mre than a trip dwn ur stmachs. With humr and tales f animals acting as individuals expressing their emtins, Persnalities n the Plate takes us n an unfrgettable jurney thrugh the wrld f animals we eat.
“This thughtful bk is nt abut whether we ‘shuld’ r ‘shuldn’t’ eat meat. Barbara King lks at the range f values and cnsequences surrunding farming and feasting, and at wh we are cnsidering eating,” says Carl Safina, authr f Beynd Wrds: What Animals Think and Feel. “Her bk gives me a richer understanding. Tree-planting, intended t help draw dwn carbn dixide frm the atmsphere, has becme a synnym (同义词) fr climate actin. In ur cnstant fcus n trees, we’ve develped a fixed understanding: Trees absrb carbn dixide, end f stry. The reality is that trees dn’t grw well alne. They exist within cmplex cmmunities, helped alng by each ther as well as the animals they cexist with. The wdland isn’t nature’s nly carbn sink: Grasslands and ceans als help reduce the carbn level and rely n a healthy amunt f bidiversity.
That’s what the paper, published in Nature, wants t get acrss. C-authr Oswald J. Schmitz, a prfessr f eclgy at Yale University, said trees might nt be able t d their carbn-uptake jb efficiently withut the right animals in their ecsystem. That’s because animals animate the carbn cycle thrugh their behavir and rles in the ecsystem. He added that the very presence f wild animals culd cause feedback effects that change the ecsystem’s capacity t absrb, release, r transprt carbn.
In Serengeti, fr instance, the sharp decline in wildebeest (角马) ppulatins during the mid-20th century allwed grass t grw wildly, eventually prmting wildfires that cnsumed 80 percent f the ecsystem annually and led t a net release f carbn dixide int the atmsphere. When disease management and bans n illegal hunting helped animal ppulatins recver, a greater share f the carbn stred in plants was cnsumed by wildebeest and released as waste, keeping it in the system and restring the grassland as a carbn sink.
Researchers rarely cnsider wildlife cnservatin as a strategy t increase an ecsystem’s carbn strage capacity, said Schmitz. “They think that animals either aren’t imprtant enugh r that yu can’t take up carbn and cnserve animals at the same time,” he said. “Our message is that yu can and shuld. It can be a win-win fr bth bidiversity cnservatin and carbn uptake.” We need a full picture - with bth trees and animals - t explre nature’s full ptential.
12. What can we learn frm the first paragraph?
A. Actins are needed t reduce carbn dixide.
B. Trees are a quick slutin t the climate crisis.
C. Grasslands and ceans help maintain bidiversity.
D. Peple are nt thinking thrugh trees prperly.
13. What des the underlined wrd “animate” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Restart.B. Activate.C. Disturb.D. Break.
14. What des the authr want t say by mentining wildebeest?
A. Animals can change the ecsystem’s capacity t stre carbn.
B. The cnservatin f animals is still a serius issue.
C. Human impacts bring abut the reductin in wildlife ppulatins.
D. The increase in animal species causes a decrease in carbn uptake.
15. Which f the fllwing is the best title fr the text?
A. Animals Adjust Themselves t Climate Change
B. Wdland Isn’t the Only Carbn Sink n the Earth
C. Trees May Fail t Fulfil Their Duties withut Animals
D. The Serengeti Ecsystem Needs Urgent Imprvement
