She’s a successful businesswman, a member f a rck band, and a Wmen’s Wrld Cup sccer player. Wh is this superstar? It’s nne ther than Barbie, the dll. A little hard t believe that, but the Barbie dll started ut as a human being! She was Barbara Handler, the daughter f Ruth and Ellit Handler.
The inspiratin fr Barbie came in the early 1950s, as Ruth was watching her daughter Barbara playing with paper dlls. Barbara and her friends used the dlls t play adults r teenagers, imagining rles f cllege students, cheerleaders and ther adults fr them. Ruth immediately recgnized that experimenting with the future frm a safe distance thrugh play was an imprtant part f grwing up. Because all the adult dlls at the time were made f paper r cardbard, Ruth decided t create a 3D adult female dll, ne lifelike (栩栩如生的) enugh t serve as an inspiratin fr her daughter’s dream f her future.
Ruth tk her idea t the ad department at Mattel Crp., the cmpany that she and her husband had funded sme years befre. The cmmittee rejected the idea as it wuld cst t much mney with little ptential (潜力) fr mass-market appeal. Then Ruth returned frm a trip t Eurpe with a“Lilli” dll, mdeled after a character in a German cmic strip (连环漫画). She spent sme time designing a dll similar t Lilli, and even hired a designer t make realistic dll clthes. The result was the Barbie dll, named in hnr f the Handlers’ daughter, and a mdel f the “girl next dr”.
Mettel finally agreed t supprt Ruth’s effrts. The Barbie dll’s first step t the market was at the American Ty Fair in New Yrk City in 1959. Girls cheered fr the dll, and Barbie set a new sales recrd fr Mattel in its first year n the market. Since then, Barbie’s ppularity has rarely weakened. Tday, with ver ne billin dlls sld, the Barbie prduct line is the mst successful in the histry f the ty industry.

The term “Pygmalin effect” was cined (创造新词) in reference t studies dne in the 1960s n the influence f teacher expectatins n students’ IQs. The studies asked if teachers had high expectatins, wuld thse expectatins becme self-fulfilling prphecies (预言) regardless f initial IQs? In that particular case, years f debate and analysis have resulted in the cnclusin that the effects were slight.
Hwever, the cncept f the Pygmalin effect — expectatins influencing perfrmance and becming self-fulfilling prphecies — is widespread. Many peple have stries f achieving smething just because smene had especially high expectatins f them.
The Pygmalin effect suggests ur reality is negtiable and can be influenced by thers — n purpse r by accident. What we achieve, hw we think, hw we act, and hw we perceive ur capabilities can be affected by the expectatins f thse arund us.
An interesting use f the Pygmalin effect might be that which is suggested by Gerge Bernard Shaw’s play Pygmalin. In it, Prfessr Henry Higgins takes a pr flwer seller frm the streets, Eliza Dlittle, and by giving her lessns helps her sund like a duchess (公爵夫人). Being able t speak like a member f the upper classes is meant t pen drs and give her pprtunities that she wuld therwise never have. Eliza finally appears t be a duchess as Higgins wishes. The expectatins peple have f us affect us in cuntless subtle (微妙的) ways each day. Like Eliza Dlittle, thse expectatins affect the pprtunities we are ffered, hw we are spken t, and the praise and criticism we receive.
Individually, these may have minimal impact. In the lng run, hwever, they might decide whether we will succeed r fail r fall smewhere in between.
The Pygmalin effect is best understd as a reminder t be mindful f the ptential influence f ur expectatins. Even if the effect is small, having high expectatins in many situatins can nly inspire thers regarding their wn capabilities. Peple’s limitatins can be stretched if yu change yur perceptin f their limitatins. A lt f what we accmplish in life is dne in grups. If yu want the peple arund yu t have success, yu can try raising yur expectatins. If yu expect the wrst, yu’ll prbably get it.
23. What is the functin f the first paragraph?
A. T explain a cncept.B. T analyze students’ IQs.
C. T emphasize teachers’ expectatins.D. T intrduce self-fulfilling prphecies.
24. What des the authr think f the Pygmalin effect?
A. It can decrease peple’s initial IQs.
B. It takes effect nly in the field f educatin.
C. Others’ expectatins can affect peple’s perfrmance.
D. Our capabilities can nly be influenced by thers’ purpseful expectatins.
25. Why des Prfessr Henry Higgins take the pr flwer seller frm the streets?
A. T teach her hw t appear t be a member f the upper classes.
B. T intrduce her t a duchess t give her pprtunities.
C. T give her advice n hw t sell her flwers well.
D. T ffer her sme mney t assist her family.
26. What des the last paragraph mainly tell us?
A. The advantages f fitting neatly int a grup.
B. The ways f being aware f peple’s limitatins.
C. The benefits f having high expectatins n thers.
D. The cnsequences f nt having cnfidence in neself.

The term “Pygmalin effect” was cined (创造新词) in reference t studies dne in the 1960s n the influence f teacher expectatins n students’ IQs. Peple’s limitatins can be stretched if yu change yur perceptin f their limitatins. A lt f what we accmplish in life is dne in grups. If yu want the peple arund yu t have success, yu can try raising yur expectatins. If yu expect the wrst, yu’ll prbably get it.
