My piano stays in a corner of the small living room. “All pianos have stories,” she said. Suddenly, my piano's story came flooding over me fully, as if I'd always had this tale to tell.I have loved music since childhood. I studied the recorder and moved to the violin, trumpet and guitar. But playing the piano had always been my dream, a dream our family could not afford.I grew up in a Chinese immigrant family in Toronto. My father waited tables in a Chinese restaurant, and my mother worked in a Chinese laundry. Despite our poor childhood, my siblings(兄弟姐妹) and I were always fed with love. I can't remember which birthday it was when my mother spared the money to buy me a doll. Of course, by then I'd outgrown wanting dolls. But she worked too hard to know that and I never told her. I happily and gratefully accepted the doll because I loved the gift and that was her loving me enough to buy it for me.So it was eventually with my piano. It was in my last year of high school. I took piano lessons for about a year before university forced me to stop. I had to make a decision to continue the more practical goal of medical school or my love for music. The practical one in me won. But I also stopped piano lessons because as with my doll, it was too late to learn to play the way I wanted.I moved that piano around with me over the next decade until my son was born. He showed an early interest in music, so I put him in piano lessons.I've come to realize that in pursuit of my career, I've let all personal pleasure fall away. Maybe it's time to get that piano retuned(重新调音) again, this time for myself, before it's too late to enjoy. Maybe that's something we all should do right now.Sometimes a single question can open whole paths of thinking and discovery. So, what is the story of your piano?24.What do we know about the author from the first three paragraphs?A.She was born in a musical family.B.She refused to accept the doll as a gift.C.She had a poor but happy childhood.D.Her parents were too busy to care for her.25.Why did the author stop learning the piano in her last year of high school?A.Because playing the piano was useless to her.B.Because she couldn't afford piano lessons.C.Because her parents forced her to stop.D.Because she faced academic and career pressure.26.What will the author probably do in the near future?A.Ask her son to learn the piano.B.Buy a new piano for herself.C.Restart realizing her piano dream.D.Focus on her medical career.27.What is the author's purpose in writing the article?A.To share her story about an unrealized dream.B.To show the advantage of medicine over music.C.To recall her unfortunate childhood experience.D.To encourage readers to play the piano.CLast Friday, a robot called EveR 6 led an orchestra(管弦乐队) in a performance of Korean music at the National Theater of Korea. EveR 6 is about as tall as a person, and has a human-like face that can show emotions. Its joints (关节) allow it to move its arms quickly and smoothly in many different directions. But EveR 6 doesn't think on its own like some advanced Artificial Intelligence programs. Instead, it has a limited group of movements that it has been trained to perform. To make these movements as natural as possible, EveR 6's movements are based on those captured from real human conductors. In Friday's performance, the National Orchestra of Korea presented a concert titled “Absence”. The concert included five different pieces of music. Two were conducted by EveR 6, and two were conducted by Soo-Yeoul Choi, who leads the Busan Philharmonic Orchestra. Both conductors worked together on the final piece.Mr. Choi was impressed with the way EveR 6 moved. “The robot was able to present such detailed moves much better than I had imagined,” he said. But Mr. Choi added that the robot's biggest weakness was that it couldn't hear. “Some people think that conducting is just a combination of hand waving and keeping the beat,” said Mr. Choi. “But a good conductor needs to listen to the orchestra, so that he or she can correct and encourage the orchestra as it plays.”Mr. Choi and EveR 6 both conducted a piece of music called “Sense”. Instead of musical notes, EveR 6 had instructions on how to play the piece. The conductors and musicians had to work together to create the music. Mr. Choi communicated with the musicians while EveR 6 kept the beat. Mr. Choi said that once EveR 6 started, the musicians had “no choice but to follow its beats”.Mr. Choi doesn't think robots are likely to replace human conductors. But he believes robots can be helpful in situations like practice sessions where the same thing needs to be repeated many times.28.What do we know about EveR 6 from the text?A.It is an experienced conductor.B.It has a lifelike appearance.C.It is able to listen to music.D.It is much shorter than a person.29.What does the underlined word “captured”in Paragraph 2 mean?A.Stolen. B.Stopped.C.Recorded. D.Hidden.30.What advantage does a human conductor have over EveR 6?A.Waving hands.B.Keeping the beat.C.Having instructions.D.Communicating with musicians.31.What is the text mainly about?A.A robot conducting an orchestra.B.An orchestra having performed in Korea.C.Modern music combined with technology.D.Two conductors getting worldwide recognition.DIn all the world's cultures, people sing, play instruments, and celebrate with music. It plays such an important role in our lives that all fields focus on its study, including one looking at the biology of music. Experts are finding that because of the way our brains process music, learning to play an instrument or just listening to music can have a wide range of benefits.Music education has received a lot of attention. Learning to play an instrument can help children improve math, science, and language skills. One study in Canada tracked children's IQ scores for nine months, discovering that children who studied music had the biggest test score improvements. The secret may lie in the way reading music and playing notes use several areas of the brain, thus increasing our ability to learn school subjects. For example, reading notes improves spatial(空间的) reasoning skills, which are helpful in solving math problems like fraction(分数) problems.Music is also used for medical purposes, such as the treatment of diseases which affect memory. The secret lies in the way the brain processes music. One area near the forehead, the medial prefrontal cortex, connects music with memories stored in two other areas: the amygdala and hippocampus. That's why an old song can remind you of something that happened years ago. For patients suffering from diseases like Alzheimer's, listening to music can help unlock buried memories. With the evidence of music's benefits pouring in, it's no wonder some countries make music study a part of their education systems. People are recognizing that music is more than just a form of entertainment. It's also great for the brain.32.Why do people study music?A.Because music can be used for medical treatment.B.Because our brains can process music in different ways.C.Because music plays a very important role in our lives.D.Because music education has received a lot of attention.33.According to the Canadian study, the IQ scores of which children increased the most?A.Those who had already had high IQs.B.Those who had always played music.C.Those who could not play any instruments.D.Those who studied music for a period of time.34.Which of the following is a kind of disease?A.Alzheimer's.B.Spatial reasoning.C.The medial prefrontal cortex.D.The amygdala and hippocampus.35.What can be the best title for the text?A.Music and health B.Music and mindC.Music and education D.Music and instruments第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 Language is a part of our daily life, no matter where we live in the world. Similarly, music is a part of many people's life. 36 Here are some of their similarities. Both language and music have a writing systemIn English we record language using the alphabet, which is a collection of letters. Similarly, we use notes to make a recording of music. Just as you are reading this collection of letters on the paper and finding meaning in it, musicians read notes and create meaning in the form of music which we can hear. 37 For example, we can read the ideas or hear the composition of someone who lived hundreds of years ago, which is really quite uplifting. Both vary with culture 38 In the same way, we know that styles of music are different around the world, which gives us the opportunity to explore many different cultures through their music. This also means that there is something for everyone! Even if you don't like Britpop melodies, you may love the energy of Latin American salsa music. Both share emotionsHow do you know that I am angry? 39 Similarly, music can sound angry, sorrowful or happy. Music can show you exactly how the composer was or is feeling, and allows us to share that emotion. When you feel happy, you might want to sing and dance to a happy song. 40 A.Different cultures make different music.B.Both language and music play a huge role in our life.C.You can guess where someone is from by listening to their language.D.By reading pieces of text or music, we are able to share experiences through time.E.In contrast, you have probably also listened to sad music when you were feeling down.F.Of course, you may be able to see it in my face, but you will know for sure through my words.G.We have all used music to express our emotions, often combining it with language in the form of song lyrics.36. 37. 38. 39. 40. Should you listen to music when you work?Do you like to listen to music when you work? Ask this question at a party, and you'll probably get 41 responses. Some will say they love it, claiming that it improves their performance; others will say they find it distracting(令人分心的) and cannot work 42 with music playing in the background. Interestingly enough, our research has found that both of these viewpoints can be true. It just 43 on what sort of work you're doing. In a recent study, we brought participants into our lab to perform a variety of tasks. They included a(n) 44 task—searching through word lists and crossing out words containing the letter “a” and a more difficult task—memorizing word pairs and 45 the word to its partner. Some participants completed all of the tasks in silence, 46 others completed the tasks with instrumental music that was either loud or soft, and either simple or complex, the latter meaning music with more instruments being played. Several key findings 47 from our study. We found that participants who listened to simple music or no music performed almost the same on the easy task. However, participants who listened to 48 music performed best on the easy task. On the contrary, participants performed worse on the more difficult task when they listened to any music, regardless of complexity or volume, compared to those who didn't listen to any music. How should we 49 these findings? They suggest that people have limited mental resources on which both 50 and tasks can draw. We can become 51 and our minds may wander when these resources are not fully used. But we can also become overexcited and 52 when these resources are used up. Not surprisingly, we typically need to use fewer of our mental resources when we perform easy tasks, whereas demanding tasks require more brainpower. However, because we might be less 53 during easier tasks, there's a greater risk of drifting off. Music might give us the extra 54 we need to overcome the monotony(单调乏味). However, difficult tasks already demand a lot of our resources. Listening to music can become too much. So best 55 should appear when we strike the “sweet spot”, which may depend on the type of music and the type of tasks. 41.A.fixed B.similar C.various D.positive42.A.exactly B.effectively C.happily D.immediately43.A.depends B.focuses C.carries D.takes44.A.unpleasant B.familiar C.impossible D.easy45.A.matching B.realizing C.suggesting D.creating46.A.until B.while C.since D.when47.A.faded B.survived C.appeared D.responded48.A.dull B.reliable C.necessary D.complex49.A.make up for B.make outC.make use of D.make up50.A.music B.work C.study D.culture51.A.surprised B.afraid C.proud D.bored52.A.distracted B.interested C.pleased D.worried53.A.disgusted B.embarrassed C.frightened D.engaged54.A.obstacle B.push C.opportunity D.rule55.A.action B.program C.performance D.problem第二节(共10小题;每小题1.5分,满分15分)阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。Have you ever dreamed of being famous 56 a musician? At first many singers may form a band to practice their music. And then they may get the chance to give 57 (perform) in pubs or clubs. Later they may gradually become popular. However, The Monkees started in 58 different way. They began as a TV show. The TV show organizers had put an advertisement in a newspaper, 59 (look) for rock musicians who could act as well as sing. 60 (honest) speaking, only one of them was good enough and the other three members pretended 61 (sing). So it couldn't 62 (call) a real band in the beginning. Anyhow, 63 they showed to the audience was really creative and they became popular. After a year or so, they worked harder, produced 64 (they) own records and started touring. In about 1970, The Monkees broke up but they reunited in the mid-1980s and in 1996 produced a new record, with 65 they became more successful. 56. 57. 58. 59. 60. 61. 62. 63. 64. 65. Dear Peter,I am very glad to have the chance to share my opinions about music and my favorite music with you. As a girl of shy and reserved nature, I had to take a fresh start to fit into the sophisticated life. One sunny day, my school announced an exciting event, a talent show for the local food bank. Students were encouraged to showcase their unique talents in front of the public in the city hall on National Day. A buzz of excitement filled the school as everyone began preparing for the big day. Deep down, I felt a spark of curiosity and a desire to participate. However, my self-doubt held me back, “I don't have any special skills to share.”Days turned into weeks, and the talent show drew near. I couldn't shake the upsetting feeling until one day Emma, one of the most popular girls in my class, came to me while I was helping in the grocery store after class. “How about singing together in the talent show?” She grinned, “I heard you singing a tune, along the way home. I can't help following you here.”Gosh, I couldn't believe my ears. Emma, with personality and popularity, acknowledged my little talent. Since Emma had the world's prettiest voice, I felt like being favoured by fortune.“You two? The talent show for the food bank?” my mum bent towards us and her face lit up. “A big occasion.” Then a light bulb seemed to go on in her head. “Why not practise right now upstairs? I bet you'll be a perfect match.” Winking at us, she seemed to know we were thinking alike.Emma and I embarked on rehearsing(排练) almost every single day after school. We brainstormed, exchanged ideas and rehearsed the scene. As the days rolled by, I was feeling pretty good about our act. But the day before the performance, Emma called that she had an upset stomach and was not in any shape to perform. I was completely knocked out by the news. In my opinion, music plays an important role in our life. It can make us feel relaxed both mentally and physically, thus helping reduce our pressure of study. What's more, it can excite and encourage us whenever we meet trouble because of its comforting and inspiring effect. Besides, music can be of great help for us to understand other cultures. I like both pop music and traditional music. Pop music can bring me excitement and lovely tunes. Traditional music shows me the peaceful side of the world and can even lead me to pursue the true meaning of life.Yours,Li Hua 第二节One possible version:I was completely knocked out by the news. Without Emma's voice to guide me, I would definitely mess up and this wasn't what I had expected! As I stood there, feeling at a loss, a gentle touch on my shoulder brought me back to reality. It was my mum, wearing a comforting smile. After having a brief idea of my story, she said in a firm tone, “You've worked so hard. You can make it on your own.” Memories of countless rehearsal came flooding back, drowning my fears and losses. Determined to spare no effort to participate in it, I adjusted my performance to a solo, practicing in no time. Finally came the big moment. I took a deep breath, stepped onto the stage and glanced at the audience. At first, a wave of nervousness swept over me, my heart pounding violently and my palms sweating. But an inner voice told me that I must keep calm,so as the song progressed, my confidence soared. I poured my emotions into the performance, letting my voice carry my feelings into the air. The crowd watched what had happened in amazement, their applause and cheers echoing in the hall. Facing the overwhelming response, it was at this moment that it suddenly occurred to me that nothing is impossible as long as we put our heart into it and don't give up.1.B2.B3.C4.B5.C6.C7.C8.C9.B10.C11.B12.C13.B14.C15.B16.A17.B18.A19.A20.B21.B22.B23.C24.C25.D26.C27.A28.B29.C30.D31.A32.C33.D34.A35.B36.B37.D38.C39.F40.E41.C42.B43.A44.D45.A46.B47.C48.D49.B50.A51.D52.A53.D54.B55.C56.as 57.performances 58.a 59.looking 60.Honestly 61.to sing 62.be called 63.what 64.their 65.which

Finally came the big moment. 根据Glastonbury, UK部分中的“Next year will see big names like Elton John take the stage.” 根据Amsterdam Dance Event, Amsterdam部分中的“At the festival, there are many live performances...” 故选A。 根据第一段中的“EveR 6 is about as tall as a person, and has a human-like face that can show emotions...different directions.” Choi communicated with the musicians while EveR 6 kept the beat...the musicians had ‘no choice but to follow its beats’.” 故选A。 根据第三段最后一句中的“For patients suffering from diseases like Alzheimer's”可知,Alzheimer's是一种疾病。故选A。 根据上文“Just as you are reading this collection...hear.”可知,读文章和乐谱都可以带来一定的意义,而下文的举例“we can read the ideas or hear the composition of someone who lived hundreds of years ago”则正是说明了读文章或乐谱所带来的意义可以超越时间。 根据上文中的“Here are some of their similarities.” 41.C 根据下文“Some will say...others will say...” 42.B 根据上文“others will say they find it distracting”可知,此处指注意力被分散,故不能有效地(effectively)工作。故选B。43.A 根据最后一段中的“depend on the type of music and the type of tasks”可知,音乐是否有助于工作取决于你做什么类型的工作。 故选A。 45.A 根据上文“memorizing word pairs”和下文“to its partner”可知此处指单词配对(matching)。故选A。 47.C 根据下文“We found that...” 48.D 根据上文“simple music or no music”及“However”一词体现出的转折关系可知,此处表示复杂的(complex)音乐。故选D。49.B 根据下文“They suggest that...” A。51.D “We can become 51 ”与下文“our minds may wander”是并列关系,结合选项可知这里指我们会感到无聊(bored)。 故选A。53.D 根据上文“we typically need to use fewer of our mental resources when we perform easy tasks”可知,我们执行简单的任务时通常需要使用较少的脑力资源,一般不会特别投入(engaged)。故选D。54.B 根据下文“we need to overcome the monotony”和上文描述的音乐的积极作用可知,音乐有激励(push)作用。故选B。55.C 根据此处语境和第一段中的“claiming that it improves their performance”可知,此处指最好的工作表现(performance)取决于音乐类型和工作类型。 be famous as... 故填as。 表示“以一种不同的方式”用in a different way。故填a。 pretend to do sth. 故填to sing。 故填be called。 故填what。 故填their。 故填which。 One possible version:Dear Peter, I am very glad to have the chance to share my opinions about music and my favorite music with you. In my opinion, music plays an important role in our life. It can make us feel relaxed both mentally and physically, thus helping reduce our pressure of study.
