It is ften said that yu can’t have t many friends. But it seems that there is a natural limit t the number f peple we stay in tuch with.A study fund that when we make new friends,by starting a new jb r ging t university,we dwngrade r even drp ld nes.And while the friends may change, the number stays almst the same.
Oxfrd University researcher Felix Reed-Tschas asked 24 students in the final mnths f schl t list all their friends and relatives and say hw clse t them they were. The pupils filled in the questinnaire(问卷) twice mre after starting wrk r ging t university. They were als given free mbile phnes and agreed that researchers culd use their bills t wrk ut wh they called, when and fr hw lng.
Putting the tw pieces f infrmatin tgether shwed that mst peple have a small circle f clse friends,wh they spend mst f their time talking t.This inner circle is surrunded by grup after grup f ever mre distant friends. As the vlunteers’ lives changed, this verall pattern, including the number f best friends, remained almst the same, meaning that sme clse friends frm childhd were drpped r dwngraded as new friendships were built.
Dr Reed-Tschas said:“Maybe my best friend is n lnger the same persn but the amunt f time I allcate(分配) t my best friend is still the same.” He added that this finding suggests that even with the cming f mdern technlgy we are nly capable f frming a limited number f true friendships.
Chester University researcher Dr Sam Rberts said:“Our results are likely t reflect limitatins in the ability f humans t keep emtinally clse relatinships bth because f limited time and because the emtinal capital(情绪资本) that individuals can allcate(分配) between family members and friends is limited.”

Having friends is bviusly gd fr cuntless reasns. And shwing the wrld that yu have lts f friends,fr example n scial media, seems like a winning strategy. If that is the truth, yur gal is t expand yur scial netwrk.Once peple see hw ppular yu are, they’ll want t jin that ppular circle, perhaps in the hpe that sme f yur ppularity will rub ff n them.
Nevertheless, can a persn even have t many friends at the same time? It’s always been a miscnceptin that if yu have mre friends, peple will be mre likely t want t be friends f yu.
In fact,a new study published in the Jurnal f Persnality and Scial Psychlgy shws that having t many friends may wrk against yu.In a series f experiments, the authrs prve that peple usually prefer t befriend thse wh have fewer friends than they d,rather than thse with mre friends. The authrs call this phenmenn the “friend-number paradx(悖论)”,which is als the title f their new paper.
Scial ties are bviusly imprtant.Having mre f these cnnectins suggests greater scial value, and mre ptential pssibilities.S it seems reasnable t assume that peple will fcus their scial energies n befriending peple wh have lts f friends already.
But the prblem is that these scial ties are nly valuable if there’s reciprcity(互惠) invlved.Friendship ges hand in hand with certain respnsibilities and expectatins. And peple with lts f friends may nt be able t fulfill thse respnsibilities—especially thse with t many friends.
In ther wrds,“friendship quality” matters as much,if nt mre, than nly the number f friends yu have.Having lts f friends means yur precius scial resurces becme dilute(稀释了的),making yu less able t be a gd friend. And ther peple take that int accunt cnsciusly(有意识地)r uncnsciusly when deciding whether t befriend yu.They dn’t want t spend their valuable scial resurces n smene wh is unlikely t pay it back.
9.What d the underlined wrds “rub ff n” in paragraph 1 mean?
    A.Lk frward t.
    B.Take cntrl f.
    C.Hld n t.
    D.Have an effect n.
10.What des the “friend-number paradx” shw?
    A.The secrets t becming ppular.
B.The ways f winning mre friends.
C.The advantages f having many friends.
D.The prblems with having many friends.
11.What des the authr think f peple with lts f friends?
A.They may fail t perfrm their duties.
    B.They dn’t knw abut reciprcity.
C.They are mre likely t be gd friends.
D.They have mre precius scial resurces.
12.What wuld be the best title fr the text?
A.Hw D Peple Chse Their Friends?
B.Mre Friends Are Nt Necessarily Better
C.Why D Peple Like Having Mre Friends?
