We should never give up when we’ve challenged. The following three actresses have set a good example to us.
Sarah Jessica Parker
When Parker was little, she had to take up singing and dancing to help feed her big family.
Despite hard times, Parker’s mom encouraged her children’s interest in the arts. When Parker was 11 years old, the family took a trip to New York City, so Parker could audition (试演) for a Broadway play. The trip was a success — she and her brother were both cast, and then the family moved to New York. Parker continued to work hard and land roles, eventually becoming the title character of a famous TV show.
Emily Blunt
Before Blunt was nominated (提名) for Golden Globes and landing leading roles on the stage and big screen, she could hardly hold a conversation with her classmates: Between ages 7 and 14, Emily had a major stutter (口吃). But that all changed when one of her junior high teachers encouraged her to try out for the school play, which she thought was a totally unappealing (无吸引力的) thing at first due to the fact that she had such a hard time communicating. The teacher suggested she try accents and character voices to help get the words out and it worked. By the end of her teens, Blunt had overcome her stutter and went on to achieve the successful career she has now.
Shania Twain
Twain’s career actually began more out of necessity than raw ambition. Her mom and stepfather often couldn’t make enough to get by, so Twain started singing in bars to make extra money when she was just eight years old. She recalls her mother waking her up at all hours to get up and perform. Sadly, when she was 21, her mother and stepfather were killed in a car accident on the highway.
Twain put her career on hold to step in and take care of her younger brothers. Only when her youngest brother graduated from high school did she feel it was OK to head down to Nashville to pursue her career.
1. Why did Parker’s family go to New York City when she was 11?
A. Because a TV show was waiting for Parker.
B. Because Parker planned to learn the arts there.
C. Because Parker’s family wanted to travel there.
D. Because Parker could try out for a play there.
2. What was her first reaction when Blunt was advised to try out for the school play?
A. Excited. B. Uninterested. C. Angry. D. Touched.
3. What did Parker and Twain have in common when they were young?
A. They helped support their family. B. They had uncaring parents.
C. They wanted to become famous. D. They had an unhappy childhood.

Failure is an unavoidable part of life. Though science has named some life skills that promise success, we’re told over and over again that no great success was ever achieved without failure — or many failed attempts. One of life’s most important lessons, therefore, has to be how to handle failure best. But what is the message?
For starters, ignore advice from anyone that tells you, “Don’t beat yourself up about it,” no matter how well-meaning they are. According to the new research from the University of Kansas, we absolutely should be beating ourselves up when we fail. Marketing professor Noelle Nelson and her team found that the more emotional a person’s response is to failure, the more likely they are to achieve better results the next time they deal with a related task.
The researchers carried out two experiments in which undergraduate students were required to perform specific tasks. In one experiment, they were asked to search online for a squeezer (榨汁机) and report the lowest price they could find with the possibility of winning a $50 cash prize. However, the task was controlled, and all participants were told (by a computer) that the lowest price was $3.27 less than their reported price. Consequently, no participant won the cash prize. When the results were announced, some participants were asked to focus on their emotional response, and others on their cognitive (认知的) response. During the next similar task, participants who focused on their emotional response to failure made more effort than those who focused on a cognitive response.
Everybody has their own unique challenges, responsibilities, duties, and projects, but these findings are related to all of us. Your personal failure may be a cake that fails to rise, a presentation that goes wrong, or a deadline that gets missed — it doesn’t matter. What matters is how you react to it. Instead of thinking about the failure, let yourself feel bad about it. Then follow this advice on how to bounce back after your failure.
4. What’s the relationship between failure and success?
A. Failure promises success.
B. Failure is the key to success.
C. Failure does damage to success.
D. Well-handled failure is good for success.
5. Why does the writer support beating oneself up when failing?
A. It’s a well-meaning suggestion for failure.
B. It’s been proved by the study of a university.
C. Being emotional is good for one’s future success.
D. It can make people less emotional about failure.
6. What is the purpose of the two experiments?
A. To test the participants’ abilities to search online.
B. To improve the participants’ cognitive response.
C. To teach the participants to avoid failures.
D. To test the benefit of emotional response to failure.
7. Which can be the best title for the passage?
A. Personal Failure Is a Cake That Fails to Appear
B. The Most Productive Way to Handle Any Failure
C. Different Methods to Change Failure into Success
D. The Reason Why Failure Is the Mother of Success
C
Is It a Healthy Interest?
The Guinness Book of World Records describes Ranulph Fiennes as the world’s greatest living explorer. His journeys include the first polar circumnavigation (极地环行) and the first unsupported crossing of the Antarctic continent on foot. So when he suffered a heart attack, it came as something of a surprise.
Exercise is highly beneficial as it reduces both the pulse (脉搏) rate and the blood pressure so reducing stress on the heart as it brings blood round the body. It also helps to keep the artery (动脉) walls more elastic (有弹性的).
But can you push yourself too much? On the subject of exercise, it is good to take several parts of “moderate” exercise a week, which is a little more than quick walking. “We need to be careful when we’re doing extreme sports,” says expert Len Almond. “Extreme stress can make almost impossible demands on the body’s ability to recover. The stress of extreme sports forces biochemical changes in the body, and the physical response to that kind of activity will be too extreme.”
We all know how the Olympics began. The man who ran 26 miles from the town of Marathon to Athens with news of a victory died as soon as he arrived, and the cause of his sudden death might be the heart attack. Further research was done by scientists. They studied cyclists on a race that covers 230 km with a height change of 5,500 m. They were interested in one particular enzyme (酶), high concentrations of which are found in those who have suffered a heart attack. The scientists found that levels of this chemical increased in most of the cyclists who completed the race. The largest increases were seen in the fastest cyclists who had trained the hardest.
Most of us will never put our bodies to such extreme sports. But if, when you hear about someone like Fiennes, you ask whether exercise is worth it. I advise you to consider your own condition. Personally, I agree with the saying: “Run not to add years to your life but to add life to your years.”
8. According to the passage, taking exercise can_______.
A. speed up the heart rate B. increase stress on the heart
C. reduce the blood pressure D. keep the artery walls straight
9. What does expert Len Almond suggest?
A. Our bodies can easily deal with physical stress.
B. Playing extreme sports is harmful to the human body.
C. We need a long period of recovery after extreme sports.
D. There is more to learn about the effect of physical stress.
10. Why is the research on the cyclists mentioned in paragraph 4?
A. To suggest a different area of research.
B. To support the activity of taking part in sports.
C. To explain the effect of a height change on cyclists.
D. To prove that extreme sports may cause heart attacks.
11. The author believes that exercise_______.
A. helps you have a regular life B. adds years to your life
C. should be done in moderation D. will be worth the effort

A new product from Microsoft Corporation can do just that for people who have trouble seeing. They may be blind or visually impaired. The product, an app, is currently available for free for Apple’s iPhone and iPad. The app is called Seeing AI. “AI” is short for artificial intelligence, a term for computers with an ability to think and learn like human beings.
Seeing AI uses both a camera and artificial intelligence to identify places, objects and people. The app then announces what the camera sees so users will know what is in front of them.
People can also use Seeing AI to learn words in English. With the app open, you can point your iPhone or iPad at any object and it will say what the object is. With Seeing AI, users can hear a description of not just objects, but other people. It can even tell you about their emotions. It will not just say that someone is smiling. The app will say that the person is happy, surprised, or angry. People can use the app when going to a store or supermarket. It can read product bar codes so users will know whether a can is filled with fruit or dog food. Microsoft says Seeing AI will soon be able to identify banknotes so people know whether they are holding a bill that is worth $ 100 or $ 1.
At restaurants, diners can use the new app to hear a list of drinks and other menu things. It can recognize both food choices and prices. People can use the app to read signs and get directions, although Microsoft warns against using it for navigation (导航) purposes.
One of the more interesting tools of Seeing AI is its ability to read documents. The app can read documents aloud and even help a user position them on the center of the electronic device.
The app is currently available in just the US, Canada, India, Hong Kong, New Zealand and Singapore, however, Microsoft says that the app will be available in other countries and districts soon.
12. Who is Seeing AI intended for?

Boys like to be considered to be brave, but what kind of things can be considered to be brave? It is not a question that can be answered by words, but by the actual deed.
A boy with the name Henry gave us a good example. Ronny and Henry were two friends in the same class. They always played together and went home together. One day as Ronny and Henry were going home after school, they saw some people fighting in the street corner. Ronny said excitedly, “Some people are fighting! Let’s go and have a look!” But Henry refused, “It’s none of our business. We’d better go home and don’t get close to them. Also our parents are expecting to have dinner with us together at home and I don’t want them to worry about me.”
“You are a coward (懦夫), and afraid to go,” said Ronny, and off he ran to the spot with some other boys. Henry had to go home alone and didn’t think about it anymore.
But Ronny thought Henry was a coward and told all the boys about that. They laughed at him a great deal. From then on, they looked down upon Henry and didn’t want to play with him.
Henry was sad but he wasn’t angry with Ronny for his rude behavior, because he had learned that true courage was shown most in bearing misunderstanding when it was not deserved, and that he ought to be afraid of nothing but doing wrong. Thus, he just ignored the other boys’ laughter and continued to stick to his thought and go to school and study as well. However, Ronny didn’t invite Henry to go home with him anymore. Instead, he had his new friends who also thought Henry was a coward. Every day after school, they didn’t go home directly but went to the river or somewhere to play games and had lots of fun.
注意:

A few days later, something terrible happened to Ronny. _____________________________

3. D 根据“Then one day, Mom asked Arlene to watch me while she was out”和“Every morning I would 6 to chat with her, and even my dog would 7 out of our yard to visit her”可知,某一天妈妈要出去,就让Arlene帮忙看作者,后来的每天早上作者都会跟Arlene聊天,甚至作者的狗也会从院子里跑去看她,结合选项,只有D项“邻居”才可以与新来的作者一家有如此频繁的交往。
4. C 根据下文中“I think Arlene saw a lot of herself in me — we were both lonely, desperate for

9. B 根据空前“we were both lonely”可知,作者和Arlene都很孤独,所以渴望陪伴(company)。
11. D 根据下文“What if I 12 Arlene as my grandma?”
12. A 根据下文“she started crying and enthusiastically accepted. Soon she printed out an adoption certificate”可知,作者把这个想法说给她时,她很激动,并且很快打印了一份收养证明,所以这里是作者想“收养”(adopted)Arlene,这符合一个五岁小孩的思维。
13. C 根据空前的“an adoption certificate”以及空后的“on her living room’s wall”可知,此处应该是把收养证明挂在(hung)墙上。
15. A 根据上文“There is something truly magnificent about a child offering love and an adult accepting it”可知,一个小孩子奉献他的爱,一个成年人接受了他的爱,所以说世界上每一个人都值得(deserves)热烈的爱。

Nowadays, many parents try their best to give their children a happy and meaningful life. However, too much love may spoil a child and even cause problems.
Two major reasons account for it. Firstly, parents today pay too much attention to children’s study, ignoring the importance of developing other skills. Secondly, many parents almost do everything for their children because of love. As a result, some of them gradually get used to relying on others, unable to look after themselves and face any challenges independently. Worse still, quite a few children are becoming self-centered and selfish, which is harmful to their future.
Therefore, something should be done to change the situation. Parents should make children experience some hardships in life instead of overprotecting. In addition, it is helpful to let children study in a boarding school which can provide them with chances to become more independent.
Paragraph 1:
A few days later, something terrible happened to Ronny. That afternoon after school, Ronny was bathing with some of his new friends in the river happily. Suddenly, he was stuck in the mud and couldn’t get out. He struggled hard but he was still trapped. He screamed for help, but all in vain. The boys who had looked down upon Henry and called him a coward got out of the water as fast as they could. They were so scared and did not even try to help him.
Paragraph 2:
At that moment, Henry happened to pass by. He heard the screams and ran to the river as soon as possible. Seeing Ronny was almost drowned, Henry took off his clothes immediately and jumped into the water without any hesitation. He reached Ronny just as he was sinking the last time. With great effort, and with much danger to himself, he brought Ronny to the shore in time. Henry was happy to help his friend, though he was extremely tired.

B. People having visual disabilities.
C. People buying goods in the supermarket.
D. People having difficulty in learning languages.

注意:

4. C 根据下文中“I think Arlene saw a lot of herself in me — we were both lonely, desperate for
5. B 根据下文中的“Every morning I would 6 to chat with her”可知,每天早晨作者都会去和她聊天,妈妈请邻居Arlene帮忙看着作者这件事后来就成了一个日常事情(daily occurrence)。
break up打碎,结束;turn over翻阅;pull up阻止。
8. B 根据后半句“she never got tired of me”可知,她从来都不会厌烦作者,这是她吸引(drew)作者的地方。
