Arthur Miller(1915—2005) is universally recognized as one of the greatest dramatists of the 20th century.Miller’s father had moved to the USA from Austria-Hungary,attracted like so many others by the “Great American Dream”.However,he experienced severe financial hardship when his family business was ruined in the Great Depression of the early 1930s.
Miller’s most famous play,DeathofaSalesman,is a powerful attack on the American system, with its aggressive way of doing business and its insistence on money and social status as symbols of worth. In Willy Loman, the hero of the play,we see a man who has got into trouble with his system.Willy is “burnt out” and in the cruel world of business there is no room for sympathy:if he can’t do the work, then he is no good to his employer, the Wagner Company, and he must go.Willy is painfully aware of this, and at a loss as to what to do with his lack of success.
When it was first staged in 1949,the play was greeted with enthusiastic reviews, and it won the Tony Award for Best Play, the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award, and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. It was the first play to win all three of these major awards.
Miller died of heart failure at his home in Roxbury,Connecticut,on the evening of February 10,2005,the 56th anniversary of the first performance of DeathofaSalesman on Broadway.

Will you be playing some music at work?
Music is particularly popular in the medical profession, especially among surgeons(外科医生).A recent survey shows that 90% of surgeons in the UK put music on the sound system in the theatre during operations.Plastic surgeons play the most music;it appears that ear, nose, and throat specialists the least.
But it isn’t only in surgeries(外科手术) where music is popular. In another recent survey,one-third of the 1,613 people said they listened to music while working. And 79% of them said that humming(哼歌)along improved their job satisfaction or productivity.
Is listening to music at work a good idea?Yes,say the experts. Many surgeons say that music helps to create a “calm atmosphere”,and a third of them add that it avoids getting bored! Also, listening to music raises the levels of a brain chemical that can help people focus.Office workers say it improves job satisfaction.Several studies suggest that it’s also good for hospital patients. Those listening to music through headphones during surgery require less anesthetic(麻醉剂),up to 50% less in some cases, and recover more quickly afterwards.“Sure, music reduces anxiety before surgery,” says Zeev Kain,an anesthetist at Yale University.
So,what type of music should we be listening to?Surgeons from the previous survey preferred rock, pop and classical music. And hip-hop is popular too. However, whatever the kind,it appears that self-selected music is the best choice.Pennsylvania State University research showed that when people chose their own music there was more stress reduction(下降).And other researchers found that when listening to self-selected music, surgeons did the maths faster and more accurately than when they were listening to music chosen for them.

To learn new things,we must sometimes fail. But what’s the right amount of failure?New research led by the University of Arizona suggests a mathematical answer to that question.
Educators have long recognized that there is something of a “sweet spot” when it comes to learning. That is,we learn best when we are challenged to grasp something just outside of our existing knowledge. When a challenge is too simple,we don’t learn anything new;likewise,we don’t expand our knowledge when a challenge is so difficult that we fail entirely or give up.
So where does the sweet spot lie?According to the new study,it’s when failure occurs 15% of the time.In other words,it’s when the right answer is given 85% of the time.
Researchers at the University of Arizona came up with the so-called “85% Rule” after conducting a series of machine-learning experiments in which they taught computers simple tasks, such as classifying different patterns into one of two categories.
The computers learned fastest in situations in which the difficulty was such that they responded with 85% accuracy.
“If you have an error rate of 15% or accuracy of 85%,you are always maximizing your rate of learning in these two-choice tasks,” said Professor Robert Wilson.
When we think about how humans learn, the 85% Rule would mostly likely apply to perceptual(感知的)learning,in which we gradually learn through experience and examples,Wilson said.Imagine, for instance,a radiologist(放射科医生)learning to tell the difference between images of tumors(肿瘤)and non-tumors.
“You need examples to get better at figuring out there’s a tumor in an image,”Wilson said.“If I give really easy examples, you get 100% right all the time and there’s nothing left to learn. You’re not going to be taking as much from that as a situation where you are struggling a little bit.If I give really hard examples, you’ll be 50% correct and still not learning anything new, while if I give you something in between, you can be at this sweet spot where you are getting the most information from each particular example.”
12.Which of the following is linked with the sweet spot?
A.15 percent accuracy.
B.50 percent accuracy.
C.85 percent accuracy.
D.100 percent accuracy.
答案:C
解析:根据第三段中的“Inotherwords,it’swhentherightanswerisgiven85%ofthetime.”可知答案:。

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Imagine that you are in a remote village somewhere with no medical clinic. 16 Once the doctors get to you, they examine you and take blood samples, but they won’t be able to help you until they take the samples back to the hospital to find out what is wrong. 17 Thanks to engineer Andy Ozcan, many people may never be in this situation. He has invented an app that turns your mobile phone into a diagnostic(诊断的) tool.
Ozcan’s invention is important because it is very accurate and easy to use.In many remote places, even if doctors have microscopes and other instruments to help them make diagnoses, there may still be other problems. Many doctors, for example, don’t have enough training to correctly interpret what they see. 18 With Ozcan’s mobile phone app, health workers can take a special photo of a blood sample and send it to a central computer at a hospital. The computer will then automatically interpret the photo and send a diagnosis back in a few minutes.
19 His technology only requires a mobile phone and an Internet connection. As more than four billion people already have cell phones, the cost of establishing the diagnostic system is fairly low.
By inventing a medical tool that uses existing technology—mobile phones—Ozcan has developed a medical tool that is both practical and economical. Therefore,it can be used effectively almost anywhere. 20
A.Another reason that Ozcan’s invention is important is that it is inexpensive.
B.Even though you may only have a simple infection(感染),you might die because of the delay.
C.People are trying to reduce the cost of this new medical tool.
D.Ozcan’s simple,cost-effective tool might just save millions of lives around the world.
E.This tool has become much more popular all around the world.
F.You become very sick and must wait days until a mobile medical unit arrives to help.
G.As a result,they may diagnose illnesses incorrectly.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。
Arguments don’t have to be hurtful, but they can easily turn into that way if you’re not careful.Luckily, there are several techniques and skills you can try, which will allow you to get your point across without turning the discussion into a full-on fight. The ability to argue effectively is actually a great skill to learn, and can come in handy in a wide variety of situations, giving you the confidence to stand up for yourself and what you believe in.You should remember to pick your battles though some things just aren’t worth arguing over!
Respect the other persons.Respect what the other persons say.An argument has to be two-sided.If you fail to hear the other side out, they will return the gesture and not listen to you.Refuting a person’s opinion is fine, but refusing to hear it makes a debate pointless.
You should always be respectful when arguing with other people. You should treat them the way that you would want to be treated and not immediately dismiss their ideas just because they don’t agree with you. When you argue with someone, you should remember to only attack that person’s ideas, not the person himself or herself.
Admit your mistakes when you are wrong. When you make a mistake, you should admit it—admit that you misunderstood or were misinformed.Being wrong doesn’t make you a weaker person but admitting you’re wrong does make you the bigger person. The best way to argue positively is to be open to new ideas. You don’t want to be wrong in an argument again,do you?Why not open yourself to the possibility of a better way of thinking or new, fascinating information.
Apologise to others when appropriate. If you’ve hurt someone or your argument has caused problems, you should apologise. You should learn to be the adult in the situation and take responsibility for your actions.
参考范文
Arguments can be influenced by several techniques and skills. When you argue with others, you can be respectful, which will help you get the same respect. If you have made some mistakes, you’d better learn to admit it and be open to some new ideas. What’s more,if you are responsible for what you have done, you should apologise to others.
