Emerson,my 11-year-old daughter,is on a wild ride with the United States Postal Service(USPS) and our mail carrier,Doug. She has a serious letter-writing habit and maintains correspondence with her favorite people. If you’ve been the receiver of her hand-decorated letters and envelopes, then I know they really make your day.
A letter from Emerson is likely to include some art,a joke and enough questions to guarantee a response. But when she wrote a letter to Doug, she put something new in it.“You may know me as the person living here that writes lots of letters...You’re very important to me,helping me stay in touch with friends.I cheer people up with my letters, but you do too!” Emerson wrote.
The next day,a package arrived with two letters. One was from Doug and the other from his superior,Sara, saying she had shared Emerson’s note in the internal newsletter(内部通讯) of the USPS and believed many postal folks wanted to thank Emerson.Emerson was so pleased with the letter that it perturbed me much, for the possible result of no reply would come as a blow to her.
Surprisingly, today,we saw Doug come with two boxes of letters from around the country. These letters were so human, filled with family, pets and a sense of kindness. But there was something more in them.People felt seen—some for the first time in a long time.“I work alone in a small rural post office...”“Not many people think about how hard we work...”Emerson wrote back seriously.
I’m not sharing this because I’m a proud dad,but because it’s relatively easy,if we take the time,to give others links they need to be well.We all want to be seen, known and loved.Send a letter.Give a call.Take a step of bravery, like Emerson.

Charles Darwin was a naturalist who described his findings in many papers and published works. The basis of his works was the theory of evolution(进化).Darwin pieced together information from his earliest studies to continuously expand upon the heart of his theory called “natural selection”.
The root of Darwin’s theory can be traced back to his time at the University of Edinburgh. There he first became interested in invertebrates(无脊椎动物) and the possibility that other creatures evolved from simpler organisms like them. Then in Christ’s College in Cambridge,Darwin began to collect knowledge about plants and the earth.
Though Darwin began his life as a somewhat religious person, several ideas like the argument that nature was a process of “God’s design” did not seem to match his rapidly increasing understanding of nature and geology. When the chance to contribute to scientific study as a naturalist on the HMS Beagle presented itself,Darwin was excited to undertake that role.Though the voyage lasted five years and was extremely difficult and tiring,it provided the basis of knowledge that Darwin would build upon to write his description of natural selection.
Darwin’s time aboard the HMS Beagle and his time spent off the ship in South America were full of observation and collection.Apart from the creatures,Darwin explored the rise and fall of the land and grasped the massive time span(时间跨度) of the earth and the changes it had experienced as an environment during its time span.
Upon his return,Darwin worked for years to produce the first edition of his theory of natural selection in his 1859 book On the Origin of Species.
Darwin drew his theory from years of studies of various creatures including some extinct animals. It was paired with knowledge of geology and how the earth had evolved as an environment in which every living thing has existed.

D.It came out before Darwin’s voyage.
11.In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?

Many Americans think of driverless cars as futuristic technology that will revolutionize travel in cities and along state highways. But recent experiments are proving that autonomous vehicles also have the potential to improve the quality of life for millions of Americans underserved by traditional modes of transportation, such as the elderly and disabled,so long as lawmakers make smart policies that pave the way for innovation.
A retirement community in San Jose,Calif, which has been transformed by a small fleet of driverless taxis, shows the potential of self-driving cars to transform people’s lives.Built by a tech start-up called Voyage, the modified Ford Fusions are currently limited to a two-mile road, but residents are already having the benefits of these autonomous vehicles, which allow them to participate in social activities they would otherwise be unable to enjoy simply because they could not get to them.
When the trial run finally expands to 15 miles of road, these residents—whose average age is 76—will also have a convenient and reliable new way to appointments. As these cars continue to serve residents there,it is easy to understand why California is moving to simplify regulations for the industry.
In Michigan,forward-thinking policies have the potential to unlock other hidden benefits of autonomous vehicles, especially for those with physical disabilities. The Michigan Disability Rights Coalition has strongly advocated for the development of this technology, saying that it could give people with disabilities greater opportunities in the workforce and enable them to lead more fulfilling, independent lives.
Many recognize that autonomous vehicles will be the future of transportation, but it is too often overlooked that this future cannot arrive fast enough for millions of Americans who are forced to depend on others for day-to-day travel. The policymakers should follow the lead of places like California and Michigan, and pass rules and regulations to unlock these hidden benefits of driverless cars.
12.What’s the attitude of most American people to the future of autonomous vehicles?
A.Uncertain. B.Doubtful.
C.Indifferent. D.Optimistic.
13.What is the modified Ford Fusion?
A.The collection of social activities.
B.The name of a retirement community.
C.A kind of autonomous vehicle.
D.A two-mile road for self-driving cars.
14.Examples are given in the third and fourth paragraphs to prove .
A.what are preventing the development of the technology
B.why driverless cars are restricted in many states in America
C.how driverless technology benefits the aged and disabled
D.when driverless cars can enter people’s life eventually
15.What does the author attempt to tell us in the last paragraph?
A.The concept of autonomous vehicles has been widely recognized.
B.The weak groups are often overlooked despite technology advances.
C.The benefits of driverless cars have been fully unlocked.
D.Regulations should go hand in hand with driverless technology.

I was packed and ready to go skiing for the first time.It felt like I was about to take an adventure with the world at my feet.Feeling empowered,I knew something brilliant was going to come out of the trip.I was more than excited at the thought of spending an entire week with my best friend,Lindsay, hanging out and enjoying winter.
Early Monday morning my youth group boarded our bus for the ski trip.Once at the destination,we saw the skiers floating so easily and gracefully down the slopes.By the time I got my skis and boots,I was confident I’d be a fantastic skier.During the lessons,I mastered the art of skiing within 30 minutes. After spending most of the time practicing again and again on the run for beginners,we were able to fly down the hill by the end of the day.In the evening,we all felt extremely tired.Complaining about the pain our ski boots had caused,Lindsay and I decided we weren’t skiing the next day.Well,of course, our friends wouldn’t hear of that.
So,the next morning we found ourselves in line for the ski lift, which wound its way up the high mountain.Lindsay and I stared helplessly at each other, our eyes showing nothing but fear. After I got into the lift,I sat totally still on the chair with my eyes closely shut, not daring to look outside. The lift rose so fast that before I knew it,I had floated up the mountain. When I finally opened my eyes,I found myself at the top in one piece.Thank goodness I was still alive!
Standing at the top of the long slope, with the skis pointing downward,I realized I was shaking.I glanced at Lindsay and found that she was scared too,for her poles kept tapping rapidly against the sides of her boots.
Taking a deep breath and gathering all our courage,we gave each other an encouraging nod and both took off.At first I barely moved, but slowly I allowed myself to gain some speed.Soon I was shooting down the mountain with my heart beating wildly.
注意:续写词数应为150左右。
Then a sharp turning suddenly came into view.
