Based on your discussion, write a passage entitled “Tu Youyou: Our Science Icon”.

Tu Youyou has become famous in Chinese medicine research. Tu, who was born in 1930 in Zhejiang Province, has been focusing on her research. In 1951, she was admitted into Beijing University. Later, she was rewarded the national advanced worker in 1994 and gained the award of outstanding contribution in 2011. In 2015 she won the Nobel Prize.

    As a result of Tu's discovery, the lives of millions of people have been saved. Her devotion to science, from which we should learn, is the key to her success. Therefore, we ought to put our heart into our studies so that we can make contributions to our country in the future.

(1) Pre-Reading 

Questions

Students can look at the pictures and make a prediction of the text.

 Students can guess the words’ meaning form the context, they can also have a discussion with each other.

This part,students can skim the whole paragraph and try to find the topic sentence .

This paragraph is too long , in the reading, we can divide it into two separate part,students can summarize the meaning on their own or have a discussion to get it.

This exercise is designed to test students’ ability of  TRUE OR FALSE statements.

This part is esay for students to find the answer.

The former of Paragraph 3 is a little bit difficult to understand, the teacher can help students to learn new words first and then deal with the text.

This part is easy to understand.

After reading,the teacher can ask students to do some comprehensive exercises to see whether they have a better understanding of the whole passage.

Students may use the mind map to find the answers.

This part can be dealt with as a “competitive answering game” to check students’ comperhenion ability.

Discussing and thinking;

  This part seems a

little difficult but it is actually very easy if they use descriptive adjectives.

 The answer is various. Thare are key words for reference, such as admirable（令人敬佩的），reform pioneer (改革先锋)，achievement (成就)，contribution（贡献），Chinese herb（中草药），cure（治疗），award（授予），artemisinin（青蒿素）， modest（谦虚）,prudent（谨慎）.

(1)Through the observation of the theme pictures, students can think about the characters and events. On this basis, focusing on the description of possible problems,which can arouse students'awareness of the problems and provide a clear direction for discourse learning.

1.Students can carry out the whole reading with the information they need to help improve their reading enthusiasm and effectiveness.

2 Students can draw the structure of the text based on reading, which is helpful to improve students' discourse awareness.

3. While reading students should also get some details of the whole thing reported in the news.

Paragraphs 2 & 3 are separately divided into two parts, which are relatively independent in meanings.

The students further experience the way of portraying the character of Tu Youyou, through the description of the true story, let the reader feel the hardship of the research and the greatness of the character.

4 Mind map tasks are designed to review and do speaking.

Based on the discussion, the students write an article under the title "Tu Youyou: Our scientific idol" .  with the aim of testing the students'  reading ability and their understanding of the distinguished figure Tu Youyou.
