When the explorers first set foot upon the continent of North America, the skies and lands were alive with an astonishing variety of wildlife.Native Americans had taken care of these precious natural resources wisely.Unfortunately, it took the explorers and the settlers who followed only a few decades to decimate a large part of these resources.Millions of waterfowl(水禽) were killed at the hands of market hunters and a handful of overly ambitious sportsmen.Millions of acres of wetlands were dried to feed and house the everincreasing populations, greatly reducing waterfowl habitat(栖息地)

In 1934, with the passage of the Migratory Bird Hunting Stamp Act (Act), an increasingly concerned nation took firm action to stop the destruction of migratory(迁徙的) waterfowl and the wetlands so vital to their survival.Under this Act, all waterfowl hunters 16 years of age and over must annually purchase and carry a Federal Duck Stamp. The very first Federal Duck Stamp was designed by JN.“Ding” Darling, a political cartoonist from Des Moines, Iowa, who at that time was appointed by President Franklin Roosevelt as Director of the Bureau of Biological Survey.Hunters willingly pay the stamp price to ensure the survival of our natural resources.

About 98 cents of every duck stamp dollar goes directly into the Migratory Bird Conservation Fund to purchase wetlands and wildlife habitat for inclusion into the National Wildlife Refuge System—a fact that ensures this land will be protected and available for all generations to come.Since 1934, better than half a billion dollars has gone into that Fund to purchase more than 5 million acres of habitat.Little wonder the Federal Duck Stamp Program has been called one of the most successful conservation programs ever initiated.

    ALoss of wetlands.

    BPopularity of water sports.

    CPollution of rivers.

    DArrival of other wild animals.

根据第一段最后一句Millions of acres of wetlands were dried to feed  and house the  everincreasing populationsgreatly reducing waterfowl habitat. 故选A项。]

6What does the underlined word “decimate” mean in the first paragraph?

    AAcquire.   BExport.

    CDestroy.   DDistribute.

Unfortunatelyit took the explorers and the settlers who followed only a few decades to decimate a large part of these resources.

7What is a direct result of the Act passed in 1934?

AThe stamp price has gone down.

BThe migratory birds have flown away.

    CThe hunters have stopped hunting.

    DThe government has collected money.

根据最后一段第一句中的About 98 cents of every duck stamp dollar goes directly into the Migratory Bird Conservation Fund to purchase wetlands and wildlife habitat...

8Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?

    AThe Federal Duck Stamp Story

    BThe National Wildlife Refuge System

    CThe Benefits of Saving Waterfowl

DThe History of Migratory Bird Hunting

    Oliver Twist (excerpt)

    Oliver's early life

Oliver Twist was born in a workhouseand when he arrived in this hard worldit was very doubtful whether he would live beyond the first three minutes. He lay on a hard little bed and struggled to start breathing.

Oliver fought his first battle without much assistance from the two people present at his birth. One was an old womanwho was nearly always drunkand the other was a busy local doctorwho was not paid enough to be very interested in Oliver's survival. After alldeath was a common event in the workhousewhere only the poor and homeless lived.

HoweverOliver managed to draw his first breathand then announced his arrival to the rest of the workhouse by crying loudly. His mother raised her pale young face from the pillow and whisperedLet me see the childand die.

The doctor turned away from the firewhere he had been warming his hands. You must not talk about dying yet he said to her kindly. He gave her the child to hold.Lovinglyshe kissed the baby on its forehead with her cold white lipsthen stared wildly around the roomfell backand died.Poor dear said the nursehurriedly putting a green glass bottle back in the pocket of her long skirt.

The doctor began to put on his coat. The baby is weak and will probably have difficulties he said.If sogive it a little milk to keep it quiet. Then he looked at the dead woman. The mother was a goodlooking girl.Where did she come from

She was brought here last night replied the old woman. She was found lying in the street. She'd walked some distancejudging by her shoeswhich were worn to pieces.Where she came fromwhere she was going toor what her name wasnobody knows.

The doctor lifted the girl's left hand. The old story he said sadlyshaking his head.No wedding ringI see.Ah! Good night.

And so Oliver was left with only the drunken nurse.Without clothesunder his first blankethe could have been the child of a king or a beggar. But when the woman dressed him later in rough cotton clothesyellow with agehe looked exactly what he wasan orphan in a workhouseready for a life of miseryhungerand neglect.

Oliver cried loudly. If he could have known that he was a workhouse orphanperhaps he would have cried even more loudly.

There was no one to look after the baby in the workhouseso Oliver was sent to a special baby farm nearby.Therehe and thirty other children rolled around the floor all daywithout the inconvenience of too much food or too much clothing.Mrs Mannthe old woman who looked after themwas very experienced. She knew what was good for childrenand a full stomach was very dangerous to their health. She also knew what was good for herselfso she kept for her own use the money that she was given for the children's food. The board responsible for the orphans sometimes checked on the health of the childrenbut they always sent the beadlea kind of local policemanto announce their visit the day before. So whenever the board arrivedof coursethe children were always neat and clean.

This was the way Oliver was brought up.Consequentlyat the age of nine he was a palethin child and short for his age.But despite frequent beatings by Mrs Mannhis spirit was strongwhich was probably the reason why he managed to reach the age of nine at all.

On Oliver's ninth birthdayMr Bumble the beadle came to the house to see Mrs Mann.Through the front window Mrs Mann saw him at the gateand turned quickly to the girl who worked with her.

Quick! Take Oliver and those others upstairs to be washed she said. Then she ran out to unlock the gate.(It was always kept locked to prevent official visitors walking in unexpectedly.)

I have business to talk about Mr Bumble told Mrs Mann as he entered the house. He was a big fat manoften badtemperedand was full of selfimportance. He did not like to be kept waiting at a locked gate.

Mrs Mann took his hat and coatplaced a chair for himand expressed great concern for his comfort. You've had a long walkMr Bumble she saidand you must be thirsty. She took out a bottle from the cupboard.

Nothank youMrs Mann. Not a drop. He waved the bottle away.

Just a little dropMr Bumblewith cold water said Mrs Mann persuasively.

Mr Bumble coughed. What is it he askedlooking at the bottle with interest.

Gin.I keep it for the children's medicine drink.”

You give the children ginMrs Mann asked Mr Bumblewatching as she mixed his drink.

Only with medicinesir.I don't like to see them suffer.

You're a good womanMrs Mann. Mr Bumble drank half his glass immediately.I'll tell the board about you.Nowthe reason why I'm here.Oliver Twist is nine years old today. We've never been able to discover anything about his parents.

Then how did he get his name

I gave it to him said Mr Bumble proudly. We follow the alphabet. The last one was an SSwubble. Then it was Tso this one is Twist. The next one will be Unwin.AnywayOliver Twist is now old enough to return to the workhouse.Bring him hereplease. While Mrs Mann went to get himMr Bumble finished the rest of his gin.

Oliverhis face and hands now almost cleanwas led into the room.

Will you come along with meOliver asked Mr Bumble in a loud voice.

Oliver was very glad to be free of Mrs Mann's violencebut he said nothing because she was angrily shaking her finger at him.Howeveras the gate closed behind Oliverhe burst into tears. He was leaving behind the other childrenthe only friends he hadand he realized at that moment how lonely he was in the world.

Mr Bumble walked on with long stepswith Oliver on his short little legs running beside him.The feeling of contentment produced by ginandwater had now disappearedand the beadle was in a bad mood once more.
