    Step 2 Read and tick
    Ask students t take a rugh lk at the text. And let them think hw they can tell it is a letter and nt a stry r a pem. Have them tick the things that can tell them.
    It has: a title √signature (Sidney) at the end
    √an address at the tp-right crner √a greeting
    √a date under the address
    Explain the meaning f any wrds which may unfamiliar t sme students and intrduce the idea that different types f text have different frmats.
    Step 3 Read and cmplete
    Have students pint ut the fllwing five parts in the letter.
    the address and the date 4. the last sentence
    the greeting 5. the signature
    the first sentence
    Ask them t read thse five parts f the letter and cmplete the paragraph belw. Tell them nt t read the whle letter yet.
    The letter is frm a by called _______ t a girl called _______. The by lives in a cuntry called ________. He wrte t the girl n _________. He wants t be the girl’s ________ and he wants her t _________ t him sn.

    Step 4 Read and chse
    In Sidney’s letter, he writes that he will tell May sme things abut himself. Have students read the letter again. On the list belw, let them chse the things that Sidney actually mentins in his letter.

    Step 5 Read and write
    Here are sme sentences abut Sidney’s letter. Have students read them and write T (True) r F (False). If the letter des nt talk abut them, write DK (Dn’t knw).

    He has an English name and a Chinese name..
    He is less then five feet tw inches tall.
    He has brwn hair and black eyes.
    He likes playing chess.
    He is a gd ck.
    There are five peple in his family.
    Sidney cannt write Chinese at all.
    Edwin Li has a yunger brther.
    The restaurant is nt near the schl.
    Sidney wants t becme an engineer.
    Sidney des nt like gegraphy.

    Step 6 Read and find
    The teacher reads sme sentences abut Sidney. Ask students t lk fr prf in the letter. Divide the class int fur grups and d a cmpetitin.
    eg: Statement: He’s prbably healthy. (He likes playing ... )
    Prf: He likes playing sprts.
    He prbably eats gd meals. (His parents wn …)
    He prbably speaks English well. (He was brn …)
    He will prbably g t university after he leaves schl. (His ambitin is … )
    He prbably wins the price n physics.
    He prbably has a lt f cmputer games.
    His parents prbably teach him t speak Chinese.
    His parents are prbably familiar with England.
    Key: 1. His parents wn a Chinese restaurant.
    2. He was brn in Newcastle/England.
    3. His ambitin is t be an engineer.
    4. His best subject at schl is physics.
    5. His favurite hbby is playing cmputer games.
    6. He can speak Chinese, but he cannt write it well.
    7. They came t England abut 30 years ag.

    Step 7 Read and match
    Give students 4 pictures. Ask them t read thrugh the letter quickly and match the pictures with the paragraphs.
    Ask students why each picture matches a certain picture and have them say smething abut each picture.
    Pssible answers:
    P1: Sidney gives the aim f his letter and sme infrmatin abut himself.
    P2: He gives infrmatin abut his family and hme.
    P3: He gives infrmatin abut his schl, his favurite sprts, his best subject and his ambitin.
    P4: He mentins the pht f himself and schl friends, and asks May t reply.
    Step 8 Discuss (ptinal)
    Have students discuss the fllwing questins in the class.
    Wuld yu like t have Sidney fr a pen-friend? Give reasns fr yur answer.
    What kind f persn wuld yu like t have as a pen-friend?
