Unit 2  A day in the life of… whiz-kid Wendy

Pre and while reading

Teaching aims

1   Encourage the Ss to use the skill of predicting before reading

2   Help Ss understand the main reading passage by introducing different activities

Materials

1           Student’s Book 8A, pages 18, 19, 21

Teaching procedure

Step 1  Vocabulary revision

Have Ss look at a picture and choose the correct vocabulary items to complete the passage. Word forms need to be changed where necessary.

Passage:

We have a family ________. Our company sells the ________ violins in the city, and we have________ great success these years. The woman in white in the picture is my mother. She is the ________ of our company, and she is also ________ the ________. Every day, she has lots of meetings to ________. The work isn’t ________--it’s hard for her. The man beside her is my father. He’s the ________ of our company. He also does quite a lot of things to ________ my mother. My mother is talking to Mrs. Smith, one of our biggest ________. They are ________ a new design.

Step 2  Pre-reading predictions

Have Ss look at he title, the subtitle and the pictures on page 19 before reading the article. Have Ss choose proper answers.

Step 3  Wendy’s daily routines

a)        Have Ss read through the passage and put the following events in time order:

(a)        I attend our Computer Club meetings.

(b)        I sometimes make phone calls to clients on the car.

(c)         I get up, wash and put on my school uniform.

(d)        My driver takes me home after school.

(e)         My family discuss the business, then I work on my computer for an hour.

(f)          I go and have lunch with a client, and then I return to school.

(g)        I continue working on my games before bed.

b)        Have Ss read the article again, and answer the questions in Exercise E1 on page 21.

c)         Have Ss complete Wendy’s timetable using information from the article.

Step 5:  Information about Wendy

Have Ss work in pairs. S1 wants information about Wendy, her family and her business. S2 gives the correct information, looking at the article on page 19 again if necessary.

Suggested questions for S1:

         When does Wendy usually get up every day?

         What does she usually do before school?

         How does she go to school?

         What does she usually do on her way to school?

         When does she start school?

         What does Wendy think of the school work?

         How are her school grades?

         Where does she have lunch?

         What does Wendy do after school?

         How long does it take her to finish her homework?

         What does she do with the family while having dinner?

         What does she do after dinner?

         When does she usually go to bed?

Step 6:  An interview: finding the facts about Wendy

a)        Have Ss complete the list in Excise D on page 21 while reading the article.

b)      Have Ss simulate an interview between Wendy and a magazine reporter. Ss work in pairs, and use the excise above to help.

Step 7:  Writing: We’re different!

Have Ss find in the article 5 things that Wendy does but .that they do differently. Then write sentences about them as in the example. The following verbs may be used.

Example: Wendy gets up at 6 a.m.

  I do not get up at 6 a.m.

  I get up at 6.30 a.m.

Homework

1. Look at Wendy’s timetable and try to retell Wendy’s daily routine.
2. Write about your daily activities with the help of the pictures in exercise A on page 18 of Student’s Book.
