Teaching procedure

Speaking: Intonation of yes/no and Wh-questions

Step 1  Listen and practice

a)        Showing the questions on the screen, including the arrows. Play the audio program. When the speaker’s voice goes up, point to the rising arrow. When the voice goes down, point to the falling arrow.

         Is Mary getting up? (↗)

         What’s Mary doing? (↘)

         Do you understand? (↗)

         How much do you understand? (↘)

         Can you repeat it? (↗)

         When can you repeat it? (↘)

         Is it correct? (↗)

         Why is it correct? (↘)

         Can you explain it? (↗)

         How can you explain it? (↘)

b)        Ss practice the above examples in pairs.

c)         Invite some Ss to read for the class. Correct their intonation if necessary.

Step 2  Dialogues

a)        Have Ss listen to the questions. Write ↗for rising intonation or↘for falling intonation.

Audio programme:

1.   Woman: Are you wearing a coat? (up) Woman: Yes, I am.
2.   Man: What are you doing right now? (down) Man: I’m having lunch.
3.   Woman: What time is it? (down) Man: It’s noon.
4.   Man: Is it midnight? (up) Woman: No, it’s a quarter to twelve.
5.   Woman: What colour is his T-shirt? (down) Man: It’s purple.
6.   Woman: Are you from Thailand? (up) Man: Yes, I am.

b)        Check answers by playing the audio program again.

c)        Have Ss practice the dialogues in pairs.

Step 3  Talking about daily routines

Have Ss look at some series of pictures and talk about daily routines using the simple present tense.

Example:

Eva gets up at 7am every morning She has a bath at 7:30am. After the bath, Eva eats breakfast. At 8:30am, she goes to work. She’s a secretary. She works in an office.

Mike gets up at 8am every morning. She has a meeting at 9am. At 10am, he works on his computer. At 11am, he writes letters to his customers. He’s a businessman. He works in an office.

Tim goes jogging at 5am every morning. He has a bath at 5:30am. He drives to work at 6am. At 3:30pm, he has a rest.

Rick gets up at 9am every day. He watches TV at 11:30am. He has dinner at 6pm. At 9pm, he goes to sleep. As you can see, he is a lazy boy.

Step 4  A day in the life of…Fantasia Fang

a)        Have Ss look at the pictures and tell what Fantasia does at a particular time.

     She gets up at 6am every day.

     She does morning exercises from 6.15 to 6.45.

     She goes jogging every morning before school.

     She goes to school at 7.30.

     She usually achieves B grades, and P.E. is her best subject at school.

     At 4.15 she walks home.

     She goes swimming for an hour every day.

     She plays basketball on Mondays and Thursdays.

     She always eats plenty of vegetables and fruit (healthy food). She seldom eats sweets. She never smokes.

     She practices playing badminton every day.

     She goes to City Sports Centre every week.

     She goes to bed at 10.30 every day.

b)        Have Ss write 1-2 sentences for each picture.

c)        Ask Ss to work on their own to produce their articles. Tell them that there is no single right answer. They can add other words or comments if they wish.

Step 5  A survey about daily routines

Have Ss walk around the classroom and ask at 3 classmates about the following questions.

Step 6  A story abut Daily Routines

Have Ss read through the story several times and try to fill in the missing words. The first letter of each word is given.

Nancy and Dan are from Hong Kong, but they live and work in Shanghai now. Nancy is a manager and Dan works in a hospital. He is a doctor. They are married, but they s________ see each other. They’re very busy. Nancy gets up e________ every day. She eats breakfast at 6:30am and l________ the house at 7am. Dan often works at n________. He comes home from the hospital at 7:30am. He’s very t________, so he goes to bed.

At 4pm, Dan wakes up. He has breakfast and makes d________ for his wife. Dan can cook very well. At 7am, Nancy comes home. Dan says, “Hi darling. How was your day?” They have a quick meal t________. Then Dan gets ready for work and he goes to work at 8pm.

Nancy is sad. She wants to talk to Dan. In the evening, she w________ Dan an email. “Dear Dab, I never see you. Please talk to your boss.”

2. Interview one of your family members. Make a timetable, and write a short article about his/her daily routine.
