On my way to school I walked next to my father, grabbing his left hand tightly. I was new from top to toe: a red hat, a suit of green school uniform and a pair of black shoes. However, they did not bring me happiness because it was the day that I was forced to go to school for the first time.
“Why must I go to school?” I asked my father. “Have I done something wrong?”
“Oh, my boy! Going to school doesn’t mean a punishment. Instead, it’s a place that makes useful men out of boys. Don’t you expect to be useful like your brothers?”
I was not convinced of that. I did not believe there was really any good forcing me out of my home and throwing me into school.
When we entered the school gate, we could see the schoolyard crowded with boys and girls. “Go in yourself and join them. Wear a smile on your face and set a good example to others,” said my father.
I hesitated for a little while and grabbed his hand firmly, and then he pulled out his hand slowly and patted me on the shoulder. “Be a man,” he said. “Today you begin your life indeed. You will find me waiting for you when it’s time for you to leave.”
I took a few steps forward. Then the faces of the boys and girls came into sight. I did not know a single one of them, and certainly none of them knew me, either. I felt I was a stranger who got lost. But then some boys began to glance at me out of curiosity, one of whom came over and asked, “Who brought you here?”
“My father,” I said in a low voice.
“My father is dead,” he said sadly.
I did not know what to say to him. The gate was now closed. Some of the children burst into tears. The bell rang. Then a lady came along and said, “This is your new home. There are mothers and fathers here as well. Everything here is enjoyable and helpful. Therefore, dry your tears and face life bravely and cheerfully.”
It seemed that there was no need to worry. From the first moment on I made many friends. I had never imagined I would have such rich and colorful experiences at school.

The Royal Academy of Medicine of Belgium will no longer tolerate parents who force their kids to be vegan(严格素食主义的). It has recently published a legal opinion arguing that veganism is unsuitable for unborn children, children, teenagers, and pregnant women. The new ruling follows a number of cases in the European country of children suffering severe health problems, and even a death two years ago, linked to vegan diets.
One of the professors behind the report, Georges Casimir, says vegan parenting now faces a prison sentence of up to two years. “We can no longer tolerate parents who force their kids to be vegan,” says Casimir. He claims children need higher requirements for protein and essential fatty acids but that the body does not produce them naturally — arguing the nutrients brought in via animal products.
A Belgian vegan couple were only sentenced to six months in prison after their seven-month-old child died of malnutrition not long ago. A Sydney couple are now facing five years behind bars after their kids suffer a brain disease linked to their vegan diet.
The animal rights group PETA angrily rejected the ruling, calling it “ignorant indeed”. The American Dietetic Association, as PETA pointed out, says, “Appropriately planned vegetarian diets, including total vegetarian or vegan diets, are healthful, nutritionally adequate, and may provide health benefits in the prevention and treatment of certain diseases.”
“Well-planned vegetarian diets are appropriate for individuals during all stages of the life cycle, including pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood, and adolescence, and for athletes,” says an official of PETA. “Many kids, including my own, are growing healthily on a balanced vegan diet. Anyway, it’s the parents’ responsibility to ensure their child is getting all the necessary nutrients.”
8. What punishment will parents receive if they force their kids to be vegan?
A. They will be heavily fined. B. Their kids will be taken away.
C. They will be charged with a crime. D. They will have to serve the community as volunteers.
9. What does the underlined word “malnutrition” in Para. 3 probably mean?
A. A serious heart attack. B. Drug abuse.
C. Severe physical injuries. D. Lack of right food.
10. What’s the attitude of PETA towards the new ruling?
A. Supportive. B. Disapproving. C. Unconcerned. D. Cautious.
11. What does the American Dietetic Association agree with?
A. It’s fine to feed kids on a balanced vegan diet. B. Veganism is unsuitable for kids and teenagers.
C. Children need higher requirements for nutrition. D. People should not be allowed to kill animals for food.

Why do I stand up for animals, and not for all those people who have no homes or no food? A poor child, no matter how hard his life is, is at least a member of the human race. This makes his chances of spending his life in a dark and small cage, or suffering from painful and frightening medical experiments a lot smaller. Should such a misfortune fall on him, there’s a chance that other people will stand up for him.
But with animals, the situation is difficult. People have the right to use animals in an economically best way, which has resulted in the shameless processing of animals. Producers of medicine are even legally allowed to kill animals and cut them open before a new medicine may be tested on humans. Partly, animal abuse is based on many people’s belief that is also the basis of one of the most unacceptable forms of animal abuse, namely animal testing and factory farming.
I believe that any person may do the most terrible things to other people at some point, if they allow something so defenseless as an animal to be abused. Personally, I think that the public have no idea of the great acts of violence that are being done in their name. And it is possible to right large-scale wrongs, if enough people learn to see through the lies of a few.
In conclusion, I do think it’s possible to live together with animals in a responsible way everywhere in the world, as long as people know about the wrongs that exist and what causes them. What we don’t know won’t hurt us; even in our country and elsewhere we “know nothing”, and that’s why deep-rooted wrongs exist and large profits can be made at the cost of animals. This is the reason why I stand up for organizations that defend animal rights. Somehow I believe that a society that takes responsibility for its weakest and most dependent members, will also be better for its people.
12. Why does the author mention the poor child?
A. To show his bad living conditions. B. To call for help from the public.
C. To attract people’s attention to him. D. To stress animals’ difficult situations.
13. What’s the reason for animal abuse partly?
A. People’s wrong idea. B. Animals’ medical use.
C. The absence of animal laws. D. The coldness of modern society.
14. From the third paragraph, we know the author thinks .
A. many animals are endangered B.it is difficult to defend animals
C. the public fail to realize animal abuse D. animal abuse may lead to violence between humans
15. What’s the author’s attitude towards animal rights organizations?
A. Positive. B. Negative. C. Concerned. D. Unclear.

You’re at home, and the work is piling up. Deadlines are fast approaching, and yet you can’t seem to focus. The kitchen, the laundry and the television are all right there teasing you into switching them on, cleaning them or using them. 16
Distinguish between work and home mode
One of the biggest advantages of working from home — slowly moving from bed to the sofa five minutes before you start — can also be your biggest challenge. Don’t forget that you are there to work. Get out of your pajamas, and get dressed like you are going to work. 17
Be realistic about what you can achieve
A wide, open day working from home can feel full of possibilities. 145 things on the to-do list? No problem! 18
Be realistic and then you will possibly achieve more than you set out to. You’ll end up feeling satisfied, rather than feeling disappointed you don’t do everything.
Work in short bursts
In the office your day is broken up by everything from meetings to water-cooler chats, and lunch breaks, but a day at home can be very unstructured. In order to be productive, you should impose structure on yourself. 19 This can be an effective way to maintain your concentration levels.
20
Distractions, distractions, distractions! You know the ones, they are everywhere at home and they’re always calling your name! To stay focused, make a dedicated workspace away from potential distractions like TV, an Internet connection, and chores. Keep things that interrupt your focus limited to short breaks in between periods of focused work.
A. Manage distractions.
B. Put what you need at hand.
C. However, don’t fall into the trap of being over-ambitious.
D. For example, 45—60 minutes’ focused work can be followed by a short break.
E. This will change your mindset and help you switch from home to work mode.
F. Well, here are a few tips to help you take control of your time and productivity when working from home.
G. You tell yourself you will spend just a few short minutes on Facebook or YouTube, only to pick your head up an hour later and glance at the clock in disbelief.

第四处:参考答案 第三句that改为which。【解析】定语从句引导词错误。that不能引导非限制性定语从句。
第五处:参考答案 第四句give前加 to。【解析】非谓语动词错误。be about to do sth.
句中test特指前面的the physics fitness test,故用定冠词the。
