Parents today struggle to set screen time guidelines. One big reason is the lack of role models. Grandmas don’t have any tried-and-true sayings about iPad time. This thing is just too new. But many experts on kids and media are also parents themselves. So when I was interviewing dozens of them for my new book, I asked them how they made screen time rules at home.
Dr. Jenny Radesky is one of the lead authors of the most recent revision of the guidelines on media and children from the American Academy of Pediatrics. She is also the mother of two young boys, and as she says, “We’re not a household that is tech-averse.”
For the kids, since they started school, the rule is “no media on weekdays”. The Radeskys unplug electronic devices at family dinner and before bed. They have a family movie night on Fridays, which is an example of the principle Radesky promotes in her research, of sharing screen time. On weekends, they allow the kids cartoons, apps and video games. But more than just limiting time, Radesky says, “I try to help my older son be aware of the way he reacts to video games or how to interpret the information we find online.”
Tom Warshawski, a doctor in Canada, has been involved in education efforts to get parents to cut back on media time. His materials promote the method 5-2-1-0. That means five servings of fruits and vegetables a day, no more than two hours of screens, one hour of physical activity, and no sugary drinks. He and his wife, also a doctor, split their work when their son and daughter were young so that one of them could always be home. “We limited TV to an hour on weekdays after all homework was done,” he says. “We said decidedly no video games — my daughter didn’t care, but my son thought it was extremely unfair. Then he resigned himself. In the end, both of them thanked us.”
4. What does the underlined word “tech-averse” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Applying technology. B. Promoting technology.
C. Being familiar with technology. D. Being opposed to technology.
5. What does Jenny Radesky think of kids going online?
A. It’s useless to limit kids’ online time.
B. They should be taught to judge online information.
C. Its disadvantages outweigh its advantages.
D. Parents should be role models for kids on this matter.
6. How did Warshawski’s kids react to their family’s no-video-game rule?
A. They had doubt. B. They didn’t care.
C. They accepted it. D. They were against it.
7. What is the best title for the text?
A. Screen Time Guidelines B. No Media on Weekdays
C. Parenting in the Age of Screens D. Reasons for Kids’ Screen Time

Liu Xinlin, 22, experienced her first ride in a self-driving taxi in Changsha, the capital of China’s Hunan Province. “I secured an appointment soon after setting the starting and ending points in the app,” said Liu. “A safety supervisor (监督人) contacted me and the taxi arrived in about 10 minutes.”
“The taxi drove very smoothly by itself, and the safety supervisor and technician sitting in the front basically didn’t have any manual(用手的) control of it,” said Liu after a 10-minute-long test ride. “The taxi passed through three or four intersections and it was a safe ride without any unexpected situations.”
The self-driving taxi, named Robotaxi, is operated by Hunan Apollo Intelligent Transportation Co. Ltd. based in Xiangjiang New Area in the city. On April 21, the company announced that a group of 30 self-driving taxis had entered public use in the city and users can hail(招手) one for a free ride.
“The in-car touch screen can display barriers and dynamic predictions within the 360-degree field of vision and clearly present the conditions of passing vehicles, intersections and traffic lights,” said Cheng Li, director of the test and vehicle operation department of the company. Cheng added users can learn information such as the vehicle’s speed and remaining distance through the screen in real time.
In September 2019, the company launched a trial service for a group of citizens, who had to first complete training and other procedures. The technical personnel have started testing self-driving taxis and accumulated a lot of test data since the second half of last year.
China allowed local governments to arrange road tests for intelligent connected vehicles (ICVs), which cover different degrees of autonomous driving, in April 2018. An increasing number of cities, including Beijing, Shanghai and Chongqing, have issued license plates for road tests of ICVs.
8. What is Liu’s attitude to self-driving taxis?
A. Supportive. B. Cautious. C. Uncertain. D. Mixed.
9. What do we know about the Robotaxi’s test ride?
A. It had unchanging routes. B. No one but the passenger was in it.
C. A safety supervisor controlled it. D. It allowed passengers to have free use.
10. Which of the following is unavailable on the in-car touch screen?
A. Remaining distance. B. The vehicle’s speed.
C. Vehicle operation. D. Road conditions.
11. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?
A. Lifestyle. B. Technology. C. Society. D. Business.

In the wild, monkeys need to keep their eyes open for all sorts of dangers, like leopards and eagles and snakes. But the green monkeys studied by Julia Fischer of the German Primate Center have an additional challenge: they also have to scan the skies for drones(无人驾驶飞机).
In a classic study back in the 1980s, scientists showed that East African vervet monkeys produce alarm calls that are specific to the predators(掠食动物) they meet. So, for example, vervet monkeys hearing a leopard alarm might climb up a tree, while the eagle call sends them running for cover under the closest bush. Now, the green monkeys that live in Senegal share a similar system to warn of leopards and snakes. But they aren’t known how they do in reaction to birds that hunt other animals.
“Therefore, we decided to fly drones over them,” Fischer said. The researchers treated 80 green monkeys to a show of drones. The monkeys did respond. They responded with alarm calls. And they responded by running away.
Here’s where things get really interesting: the calls the green monkeys made after spotting the drones were different from the ones they use to signal leopards or snakes. But even more interesting: “When we did an analysis of the calls, we found these alarm calls were almost surprisingly similar to the ones of the East African vervet monkeys.” The findings are described in the journal Nature Ecology & Evolution.
The fact that the two monkey species seem to speak the same language, even though they evolved in different ways from their last common ancestor some 3 million years ago, suggests that this “spoken” warning system runs in their blood. So next time if you hear a green monkey give an alarm call, watch out for a hungry bird. Or check to see if you got a package delivered by a drone.
12. What did Fischer want to find about green monkeys?
A. How they respond to bird predators. B. How they discover the potential dangers.
C. How they communicate with each other. D. How they protect themselves from the unknown.
13. How did the researchers draw their conclusion?
A. By making comparisons. B. By making classifications.
C. By referring to another study. D. By conducting an experiment.
14. What finding is more interesting according to the researchers?
A. Green monkeys did respond to drones. B. Vervet and green monkeys use similar calls.
C. The two monkey species evolved the same way. D. Green monkeys can make different warning calls.
15. What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph mean?
A. The monkey species are born with the warning system.
B. The warning system changes as the monkeys evolve.
C. The warning system is a very complex subject.
D. All monkey species use the warning system.

The Plastiki looks similar to many other boats in Sydney Harbor. It’s about eighteen meters long, six meters wide and it weighs about twelve thousand kilograms. 16 And it has an average speed of five knots(节). However, once you get near to the Plastiki you realize there is a big difference. It’s made of recycled plastic bottles.
17 One day, the environmentalist David de Rothschild was reading some information about all the plastic in the seas and oceans. He couldn’t believe what he was reading. For example, humans throw away four out of every five plastic bottles they use and plastic rubbish causes about eighty per cent of the pollution in the sea. 18 To attract attention to the problem, he started building a boat made of plastic bottles.
As well as building the boat with recycled plastic, it was important for him to make the boat environment-friendly and user-friendly. The boat uses renewable energy sources including wind power and solar energy. The crew can make meals with vegetables from the small garden at the back of the boat. 19
David de Rothschild sailed the Plastiki across the Pacific Ocean from San Francisco to Sydney. The journey wasn’t always easy and David de Rothschild and his crew had to take care during storms. 20 Originally, David de Rothschild thought the boat could only travel once but it survived so well that he is planning to sail it again one day.
A. How did the Plastiki begin?
B. It carries a crew of six people.
C. Let’s see when the Plastiki was created.
D. It took one hundred and twenty nine days.
E. And the boat’s shower uses salt water from the sea.
F. They can take a break and get some exercise by using a special exercise bicycle.
G. Soon afterwards, David de Rothschild decided to help the fight against pollution in the sea.
