I’m having a wonderful time in South Africa! I settled in very quickly at the apartment and did volunteer work on the boat the day after I arrived.
The area suits me well, right on the sea, with lovely views of the ocean from the top windows of the apartment. Everyone is really friendly. People really make me feel at home.
I also got to go in the cage, the best thing I’ve ever done in my life! The sharks are so beautiful, and even more impressive underwater. We also saw a southern right whale near our boat as we were on our way back to the shore. It was totally splendid. I thought I was going to cry!
As volunteers in a sea preservation project, we went out to the sea and I helped out with getting the visitors in or out of their wetsuits and generally helped out on the boat. We were usually back on shore by around 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. but the day could go on longer if it took a while to get sharks. But a local guide for us usually worked very well and we got a shark within half an hour of getting to our spot.
At the end of the day I helped clean the boat with a lovely guy named Mandla, who taught me a lot. It was very rewarding when the visitors really enjoyed the sharks and the weather was good. Some days could be quite hard when we had to battle with the rain, wind and poor water visibility(能见度) which would prevent the visitors from seeing things clearly underwater. Luckily that didn’t happen too often though; the weather was usually good!
The amount I have learned since I got here is unbelievable! Not only more about the sharks, but also about working out at sea, which I knew nothing about 2 weeks ago!

    A. spend her holidays on the sea B. make some new friends
    C. pay a visit to the cage D. take up a sea preservation project
    6. If the water visibility became poor, .
    A. the visitors would be unable to swim in the sea B. the volunteers would stay longer on the sea
    C. the volunteers’ work would become very hard D. the volunteers would give more help to the visitors
    7. What is the main purpose of the passage?
    A. To share the author’s experience on a project. B. To call on us to protect sea animals.
    C. To show us the author’s interesting life on the sea. D. To encourage us to pay a visit to the sea.

Since the beginning of the year, a mystery donor in the German city of Braunschweig has given away several “miracle bags” containing over 200,000 euros in cash to various charities.
The bags, each full of banknotes worth between 20,000 and 100,000 euros, started appearing at the Braunschweiger Zeitung newspaper’s headquarters earlier this year, with specific instructions of which local charities the money should go to. The latest one, a bag containing 100,000 euros in two hundred 500 euro bills, was received last Monday along with instructions that it be donated to a local hospice(临终安养院), but other miracle bags have gone to organizations helping crime victims, and several other charities.
“To make it easier for seriously sick people to die is a sign of human warmth and earns respect and recognition,” a letter attached to the latest miracle bag read. Employees at the local hospice are obviously ecstatic to have received their largest donation ever, which will help them look after terminally(晚期地) sick patients.
What’s even more special about this mystery donor is that he seems to have been donating since several years ago. That was when local newspapers started receiving miracle bags along with instructions of where the money should go. “We simply don’t know, and we don’t want to endanger the good deed,” said Braunschweig journalist David Mache, adding that the mystery donor has contacted his newspaper several times recently to have money sent to various local causes and says that he will continue sending “bags”.
Last year, another newspaper received a miracle bag containing 100,000 euros and instructions to have it passed on to a local charity towards building a new hospice. No one knows if the same person has been donating bags full of cash for several years or if it’s more than one now, but as long as good things are happening, no one really cares.
    8. Which of the following is true about the “miracle bags”?
    A. They are just ordinary bags.
    B. They are bags which can produce money.
    C. They are full of money and sent to help those in need.
    D. They are filled with euros, which can show how rich the owner is.
    9. What does the underlined word “ecstatic” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
    A. Confused. B. Delighted. C. Disappointed. D. Amazed.
    10. What can we know about the mystery donor from the passage?
    A. He has already been found.
    B. He is a kind and generous man.
    C. He does so in order to earn a good reputation.
    D. He hopes his donations can help people all over the world.
    11. What would be the best title for the passage?
    A. Miracle bags B.A mysterious donor
    C. Donations to charities D. A local newspaper

Staying up late doing homework is always tiring. And perhaps when we become tired, we feel the need to eat unhealthy snack food. Recently scientists have been investigating tiredness and snack food.
According to a study in The Journal of Neuroscience, people are more likely to take snacks when they don’t get enough sleep.
For the study, researchers from University of Cologne in Germany gave the same dinner to 32 healthy men aged between 19 and 33. Half of the men were then sent home to bed, and the other half were kept awake in the laboratory all night.
The next morning, the participants were asked to consider how much they would be willing to pay for snack food items shown to them in pictures.
According to the researchers, all were similarly hungry in the morning, and had similar levels of most hormones(荷尔蒙) and blood sugar.
However, brain scans showed that when the sleep-deprived(缺少睡眠的) participants looked at the pictures of junk food, they released more of the “hunger hormone”. This is the hormone responsible for increasing the appetite, and making us consume more.
Asked about how much they would pay for snacks, “participants with sleep deprivation were more willing to overspend on food items than those with a good night’s sleep,” researchers told Science Daily.
Researchers also observed that among the people who hadn’t slept, there was greater activity in the part of the brain where food rewards are processed.
The scientists think that sleep-deprived people experience changes to the hunger hormone and the brain’s reward system that then lead to a stronger desire to eat snacks with high fat and calories.
“This brings us a little closer to understanding the mechanism(机制) behind how sleep deprivation changes food valuation,” Professor Jan Peters, a co-author of the study from the University of Cologne, told The Independent.
    Some tips on this:
*Listen to some soft music to relieve your tiredness.
    * Do some slight exercise for a short time when you’re tired.
*Eat yogurt or fruits to replace snacks with high fat and calories.
    *Distance yourself from snacks.
    12. What can we know from the first two paragraphs?
    A. Less sleep leads to more snacks. B. Staying up late does harm to health.
    C. Tiredness is the cause of less sleep. D. We need no snacks when we sleep.
    13. What makes people eat more junk food according to the study?
    A. Blood sugar. B. Food items.
    C. The hunger hormone. D. Fat and calories.
    14. Which of the following is true according to the passage?
    A. People who lack sleep usually spend less on food items.
    B. Listening to soft music helps people feel relaxed.
    C. Exercise as much as you can when you are tired.
    D. People who sleep well can get food rewards.
    15. What’s the author’s attitude towards snacks?
    A. Positive. B. Indifferent. C. Negative. D. Neutral.

Melting ice sheets(冰盖).Wildfires that turn the sky red. Record-breaking heat waves. The terrifying effects of climate change are hard to miss. 16
Here are practical ways to manage climate change anxiety.
Get educated about climate change. 17 But people may hear only the most negative reports and then hopelessly stop listening. One way to deal with stress related to the unknown aspects of climate change is to learn as much as possible about it. That includes understanding what’s at risk and how average people can make a positive difference. Educating yourself will help you see both climate change and courses of action more clearly, which can reduce anxiety.
18 Many people don’t know where to start in order to fight climate change. While governments and the private sectors(部门) have the power to make the most significant changes, average people can change their habits in important ways. Eating less red meat, for example, can reduce carbon emissions. Letter writing campaigns, volunteerism and public advocacy are all ways to get involved in climate change activism.
Reframe(重新构造) negative thoughts. Thoughts of the total destruction and end of the world may keep crossing your mind, or even prevent you from making future plans. 19 People who develop this skill tend to overcome eco-anxiety better than those who find it difficult to regulate their thinking and emotions.
Deal with all the stressors in your life, not just climate change. 20 You may also be experiencing financial, relationship, professional or physical stress. Such stress can add to your negative feelings about climate change, and vice versa(反之亦然). So it’s vital to deal with other stressors.
    A. Start with a detailed plan of action.
    B. Find concrete ways to make a difference.
    C. What can we do to stop those terrifying effects?
    D. They also leave many people fearful for the future of the planet and our civilization.
    E. There’s still time to prevent — with immediate action — the catastrophic effects of climate change.
    F. It’s important to think of climate change-related stress as part of your overall mental health.
    G. If so, focus your attention on the present moment while finding something positive about the climate.

    17. 参考答案E【解析】根据下文“But people may hear only the most negative reports and then hopelessly stop listening.”
