A little short-term adventure. Really, that’s all Susan Parker was seeking in 1987 when she signed up to volunteer with the world’s largest civilian floating hospital, Mercy Ships.
Susan believed that it would be great fun to lend a helping hand to people in need and experience shipboard life. She had a job to return to in Los Angeles-and anyway, “I had no intention of staying on the ship any longer than six months,” she says.
But Susan, a recent university graduate, had underestimated(低估) her own devotion to hard work and her commitment to helping others. Her six months quickly extended into a year and that year turned into five. She fell in love with the ship’s surgeon, Gary Parker. And more than 30 years and having two children later, the Parkers continue to live and work full time on one of the hospital ships, the Africa Mercy. The couple raised their two kids aboard — no easy job. “There were no safe places for children,” says Susan, 55. “So someone had to be with them all the time.”
Nor were the children able to enjoy the opportunities most American students are provided — the sports teams, the special-interest clubs, the musical groups. The on-board nursery and school only has about 50 members from infants(婴儿) to 12th graders, so the options are limited.
Her daughter Carys and her son Wesley are both off in college now and Susan says their children are grateful for the empathy(同情) and compassion that have been built into their characters by being raised aboard the ship.
“When I look back, I can see that they didn’t miss out on anything,” she says.
Susan has held various positions on the ship, from the hospital administrator to the training director, working 12-hour days and returning to her cabin at night.
“It’s in Susan’s heart to help people,” says Martha, a Liberian mother whose daughter has received several life-saving operations aboard the Africa Mercy. “Susan denies herself so much, but her sacrifices have restored joy to my family and my life.”
4. For what purpose did Susan sign up to volunteer in 1987?
A. She decided to devote her life to it. B. She intended to apply her knowledge to practice.
C. She wanted to gain experience for her future career. D. She would like to have a brief experience of adventure.
5. Why didn’t Susan leave the ship sooner?
A. Because she fell in love with Gary Parker.
B. Because she couldn’t find a better job on land.
C. Because she wanted to bring up her two kids on board.
D. Because she was committed to helping those in need.
6. What can we know about Susan’s two kids from the passage?
A. They have graduated from college.
B. They grew up with lots of children of their age.
C. They didn’t feel sorry for being raised aboard the ship.
D. They joined several special interest clubs while they were on board.
7. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. A floating hospital — Mercy Ships B. Volunteering on board for over 30 years
C. Going after your dreams bravely D. Offering help to those in need

Kids spend a lot of time looking at the screens, and some parents worry, but a new study argues against the fears parents may feel.
“The danger is that they’re hearing a message that social media, digital technology use is causing very serious and harmful problems like depression and suicide-related behaviors. And the idea is that if you shut off social media, which lots of kids use to connect with each other and find out information about health, you could be making a situation worse. Parents are really being sent a message that is not supported by anything scientifically,” Candice Odgers, professor of psychological science at the University of California, said.
Odgers and her colleagues looked at the screen-related behavior of 400 public-school students in North Carolina aged 10 to 14. This group was picked as a representative sample of race and socio-economic status for the entire U.S. The researchers found that the kids spent between almost five hours to seven hours per day on their devices, with the older kids online the most. That’s a lot of hours, but:
“Overall, what we find is no connection between the amount of time that young people spend online using digital technologies and mental health symptoms like depression and anxiety. When we do find associations, they were actually quite surprising to us. We found that young people who sent more text messages actually reported better mental health.
Now, again, this was a small association, but it reflects what other people have found: that people who are very connected offline and who use technology in the positive ways to stay connected often, are more connected online as well and experiencing better mental health.”
So why the fears about screen time? Odgers argues that the methodologies for older studies may have led to false conclusions.
“One of the issues with the research that’s been done to date has been that youths are, you know, in school… They have a survey put in front of them, and they’re asked to recall, over the past six months, ‘How often are you online?’ and ‘Have you ever felt depressed?’ And the correlation between those two things has been used to spread a lot of fear around this connection between social media use and things like depression — 99.5 percent of the reasons that kids differ in their depression are due to something other than the time they spend online.”
8. What can we know according to Professor Odgers?
A. Social media is causing serious problems. B. Digital technology is the cause of depression.
C. Parents are holding wrong ideas about social media. D. Parents have showed too much concern for their children.
9. What can we infer from Paragraph 4?
A. The more screen time kids have, the less happy they are.
B. Kids who use social media more are not necessarily depressed.
C. Using digital technology has nothing to do with one’s health.
D. The relationship between digital technology and depression is unclear.
10. The research also tells us that .
A. technology should be put to good use B. kids who make more phone calls might be happier
C. we should pay more attention to mental health D. we should enrich our lives by spending more time offline
11. The problem with the old research is .
A. the sample is too small B. the respondents are too young
C. not considering the time spent offline D. deliberately linking the Internet to mental issues
D
Those tempt to set up office in the garden as temperatures rise should think twice or put a hat on.
A study by university teams in Denmark and Greece said workers could be damaging their brains by working in hot, sunny conditions. The new study shows that sunshine could diminish brain power, making it harder to make the right judgments. Eight healthy, active males aged between 27 and 41 took part in the research.
Working in hot temperatures is already known to cause hyperthermia — a rise in body temperature — which can cause physical exhaustion. But now scientists say prolonged exposure of the head to the sun also affects the brain’s ability to function properly.
The brain function test consisted of four different computer-based maths and logic tasks that relied on precise calculations. Four heat lamps were positioned to radiate either on the lower body or the back, side and top of their heads.
Professor Lars Nybo of the department of nutrition, exercise and sports at the University of Copenhagen, said, “This study provides evidence that direct exposure to sunlight — especially to the head — impairs motor and cognitive (认知的) performance.” The decline in motor and cognitive performance was observed at 38. 5 degrees. Researchers said those exposed to sunlight for long periods should cover their heads.
Professor Andtreas Flouis of the FAME Laboratory in Greece, said, “It is of great importance that people working or undertaking daily activities outside should protect their heads against sunlight.”
“Dips in mental performance caused by sunshine could also mean drivers were more likely to make mistakes on the road,” he suggested.
12. What does the underlined word “diminish” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Enlarge. B. Reduce. C. Strengthen. D. Destroy.
13. Which of the following is true about the study?
A. It was based on analyzing data.
B. 27 males took part in the study.
C. High body temperature can make people worn out.
D. Working in hot conditions too long could damage the brain.
14. What does Professor Lars Nybo agree with?
A. People should wear a hat while working.
B. Working in hot temperatures causes hyperthermia.
C. Being exposed to the sun directly reduces the brain’s function.
D. Drivers on the road are more likely to make mistakes.
15. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. People shouldn’t work when it is hot and sunny.
B. Body temperatures rise as the weather gets hot.
C. It’s harmful to work in hot conditions outside.
D. Long exposure of the head to sunlight impairs brain power.

Alaina Gassier, a special educationalist in Annapolis Maryland, started a program called “Books and Barbers”. Children go to the barber, choose a book and read out loud while the barber cuts their hair. 16 And there is an added prize: money. The kids get paid to read. The program is for children aged about 5 to 12. There is no limit to the number of haircuts they can get. The books for the program are donated by teachers and the International Book Project.
17 “Once a student feels comfortable, the brain opens up, and they are able to start focusing on reading,” Gassier said.
Margaret, six-year old boy Owen’s mother, brings her son to the barber that joined Gassier’s program, saying “It truly encourages reading.” Amir Shalash owns the barber shop. 18
He is listening to him read and helping him with his reading. Shalash says the money gives the children a good reason to try reading out loud. The parents are charged $16 for the haircut and the child is given $3 either to spend right away or to save for something later.
19 “It is not only to increase their participation in the program, but also to see the lesson of being able to save money,” he added.

Last summer I spent a two-week vacation at my aunt’s. One morning I went fishing in the river, which two women washed clothes. I found very favorable place. Casting out my line, I waited anxious for a bite. Suddenly there came a cry: “Help! Help!” I looked to the direction of the call and saw a boy falling into the river. Threw the fishing pole, I dashed over like an arrow, jumped into the river and swam very much quickly towards the boy. Then together with his mother I carry the boy on my back to a nearby hospital. That boy was saved. The mother gave me a thousand thank.
Back to my fishing place, I found my fishing pole floating on the water. I managed to get them. But to my great surprised, there was a big fish on the hook.
