Camelli’s duty is simple: to give back to the community where she was raised. Warren, Ohio lies just thirteen miles north of Youngstown, the former center of steel production, and now one of the neediest cities in the country. Both cities’ populations have been on the decline each year, with unemployment rates surpassing(超过) both the state and national averages.
But it isn’t always this way. Thirty years ago, when Camelli was a student at Howland High School, where she now teaches Advanced Placement Psychology, “The poorness level was around 6%,” she says. Today, it is close to 40%.
This financial condition influences everything from the way students learn to their ability to deal with social and emotional issues. Knowing this, Camelli created Paw Pantry. Whether it’s for food, clothes, school supplies or personal hygiene(卫生) products, students and their parents can go on the district’s website and fill out a request form for Paw Pantry products. They can choose to pick their items up — or have them delivered — at school.
Camelli mentioned Paw Pantry when she attended an activity at her high school in 2017. It made her former classmates — many of whom had since left Warren — aware of how their hometown had changed over the years. Soon, “Money started pouring in from all over the country, all over the world,” she says.
In just a year and a half since Paw Pantry began, Camelli has received plenty of non-perishable(不易变质的) food, clothing, lunch boxes, backpacks, school supplies — even home goods, including a refrigerator, a washer and dryer, and a stove.
Camelli actively shows her students the power of connection. “I’m definitely kinder because of Ms. Camelli,” Blake says. “Ms. Camelli is a mother, but she’s also a mother figure for all of us,” Blake says. “Ms. Camelli, you will never understand how happy this act of your caring has made me,” she adds.
Camelli is a community activist, a mental health supporter, and by many people’s standards she’s most certainly a hero. But she doesn’t see herself that way for that’s just what she as a teacher should do.

C. Camelli was hopeful about Paw Pantry’s future. D. Many people treated Paw Pantry with doubt.
6. How does Blake feel about Ms. Camelli?
A. Confused. B. Annoyed. C. Unconcerned. D. Grateful.
7. What can we learn about Camelli from the last paragraph?
A. She feels great about herself. B. She won’t continue her teaching career.
C. She thinks that she just does what a teacher does. D. She doesn’t think she has done enough.

Empathy(同理心) is one of human’s qualities. It’s something that almost everyone needs. However, few know how to give or receive it.
Many people often confuse sympathy with empathy. In fact, they are two quite different items. Empathy is not just the ability to understand someone’s feelings. Criminals often take advantage of people by appearing to understand their feelings and subsequently(随后) gain their trust. Empathy is more than that. Not only is it the ability to recognize how someone feels, but it also values and respects the feeling of another person. It means treating others with kindness, dignity and understanding.
Kids need to see adults show empathy. While some children are talented with naturally kind hearts, in most cases kids need to see empathy modeled by the adults around them. It starts with the way parents relate to their children. Parents who show an interest in the things that matter to their kids and respond to kids’ emotions in a positive and caring way are teaching the skill of empathy.
Parents should also meet children’s emotional needs. When children have their emotional needs met, two things happen. They learn how to meet the emotional needs of others and they are anchored(扎根) in what they receive, meaning that they are secure enough to give when need arises but first they need to receive. An empty jug cannot fill a cup.
Parents ought to learn to talk to kids about emotional needs. Many adults find it hard to talk about emotional needs or anything related to emotions. Consequently, they spend their lives tiptoeing(避开) around the subject of emotions. These are people who don’t know how to handle the emotions of others and are uncomfortable with any situation that calls for an emotional response. Sometimes they are afraid of their own emotions because they have never learned how to deal with emotional needs.
8. What can we learn about empathy?
A. It’s almost the same as sympathy. B. It’s harmful because it is often used by criminals.
C. It shows that a person respects himself. D. It means more than understanding others.
9. Why should parents show empathy before their children?
A. Children are born with kind hearts.
B. It can show the importance of empathy.
C. Parents can set an example for their children.
D. It helps their children show interest in different things.
10. What will happen after parents satisfy their children’s emotional needs?
A. Children will meet others’ emotional needs. B. Children can’t focus on what they receive.
C. Children will be more optimistic. D. Children needn’t rely on others.
11. Whom is the text most probably written for?
A. Teachers. B. Children. C. Officers. D. Parents.

After several years of hard times, US car manufacturers sold more automobiles in 2019 to American customers than ever before. The cars Americans are driving are more fuel-efficient and typically loaded with electronic devices. But within a decade, manufacturers say, drivers should expect semi-autonomous and fully autonomous cars that will make driving safer and less tiring.
In 2010 US military research agency DARPA challenged automotive engineers to try to build a self-driving car. Though the course had only simple obstacles and no other traffic, none of the vehicles reached the end.
Years later the technology has advanced so far that manufacturers are testing it on roads with real traffic, trying to make it absolutely safe for both passengers and pedestrians(行人).
“I figured if I was able to make a car that was smart enough to drive itself, I could probably make a car that was smart enough to be a bit safer,” said Ford’s James McBride.
Google admits that its experimental self-driving cars have had some close calls, but points out that in late 2017 incidents happened once every 1,300 kilometers, while in 2018 they happened once every 8,500 kilometers.
It’s not just about safety, but manufacturers also have to make sure consumers are willing to let go of the wheel.
One thing that can help customers get used to not being in control is the driving simulator(模拟装置). Wearing virtual reality goggles, drivers can experience the sensation of being passive behind the steering wheel.
Some cars are already equipped with electronics from the DARPA Grand Challenge, such as laser proximity sensors (近距激光传感器), video cameras, lane-change warning lights and other devices.
Researchers say future cars will also be able to communicate with the world around them, such as pedestrians’ smartphones. Experts say that safe and affordable self-driving cars should be available to the average consumers within four to five years.
12. What can we learn from the first paragraph?
A. Manufacturers are not satisfied with the present cars.
B. American cars are the best in the world.
C. The US has invested more now than several years ago.
D. American customers preferred smarter cars in the past years.
13. As far as James McBride is concerned, .
A. American cars are not safe B. safety of cars matters much more
C. customers’ concern is important D. smartness of cars comes first
14. With a driving simulator, drivers may .
A. feel accustomed to the seat B. feel limited to the seat

15. What’s the best title for the text?
