Having eaten in the fast-food restaurant five times a week, Jessica Dotson’s weight began to increase out of control. The Mum-of-two from Talladega, Alabama, US said it was only after having her second baby that she realized she needed to change her ways for her kids. Her weight had reached almost 252 pounds and her blood pressure level had rocketed. Doctors warned that she was heading for a heart attack if she didn’t lose weight.
After researching her choices, Jessica chose to try intermittent fasting(间歇断食), which involves eating within an eight-hour window and fasting for 16 hours a day. The idea behind it is simple: limiting the hours of the day you can eat means you limit calorie intake(卡路里摄入量). The plan has been found to adjust blood pressure, reduce a person’s risk of cancer and heart disease, as well as reducing inflammation(炎症). She’s lost 98 pounds in several months — and still enjoys her favorite foods. For Jessica, the diet plan means cutting her 3,000-calorie-a-day diet by half. Also, Jessica includes more vegetables in her diet and she’s built up the confidence to join a gym.
The Mum said the key to fasting is that you don’t have to exclude many foods in your diet — rather, cut down. She said she had replaced soda drinks with diet ones and water, but tried not to keep herself away from anything. “If I tried other diets, I would fail, because I would want to eat something — and eat it,” she said. “It’s all about moderation(节制) and self-control. Sure you can have a piece of candy, but you have to eat that one piece and not the whole bag. It’s involved in self-control.”
Jessica also dances to videos. And she still treats herself to a fast-food restaurant around twice a week — though she’s replaced the twenty-piece chicken nugget meal with a six-piece meal with small fries. She said, “It’s now more of a treat. I do feel pleased with what I’ve done. My blood pressure problems are gone.”
4. Why did Jessica start to lose weight?
A. She wanted to have another baby. B. She did that at her doctor’s request.
C. She wanted to do so for her children. D. She wanted to look more beautiful.
5. According to the passage, intermittent fasting .
A. can speed up fat burning B. asks people to lose weight with the help of exercise
C. is a way of losing weight that helps people be healthy D. keeps people away from food for one third of a day
6. The underlined word in Paragraph 3 has the closest meaning to .
A. remove B. mix C. reduce D. increase
7. What can we know from the passage?
A. Jessica no longer eats junk food now.
B. Jessica is not satisfied with her recent weight.
C. Jessica will be lighter if she tries other weight losing methods.
D. Besides fasting, Jessica exercises and her physical condition is better.

Emperor penguins(帝企鹅), the largest penguin species, are black and white, with yellow ears and breasts. The male is responsible for incubating(孵化) the egg for about two months.
Normally about 8 percent of the world’s emperor penguin population breeds at Halley Bay. According to a study, almost no emperor penguins have been seen at Halley Bay since 2016. The study found that in 2016 and 2017, there was no breeding activity at Halley Bay. Last year, there were very few pairs. The number of breeding pairs, male and female penguins, that raise their chicks together, has gone up quickly at a nearby breeding ground called Dawson-Lambton. Yet, the study’s writer said that number is not the same as the number of penguins usually seen at Halley Bay. “That means the penguins have not completely disappeared, but it doesn’t explain the total number lost at Halley Bay,” Trathan said, head of conservation biology at the British Antarctic Survey.
Scientists say that storms, winds and warmer weather break apart the “fast ice” (sea ice that is connected to land where emperor penguins stay to breed), which leads to the sharp drop in numbers. The pairs incubate their eggs and care for their chicks — one each pair — on ice. After breeding and then feeding the chicks for a few months until they can swim, the penguins move to open sea.
Trathan said a super strong EL Niño — a natural cycle of warming in the central Pacific Ocean that changes weather worldwide — melted more sea ice than usual. Winds and waves hit the ice shelf, or fast ice. That made the breeding home a dangerous place to raise chicks.
“The breeding colony(群落) failure is a warning of things that might become important in the future. If, one day, there is no place for emperor penguins to breed, they will disappear from the world completely. It’s a serious problem,” Trathan said.
8. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Emperor penguins will disappear completely soon.
B. Emperor penguins are missing from Halley Bay.
C. Emperor penguins prefer changing their breeding places frequently.
D. The number of emperor penguins breeding at Dawson-Lambton is dropping.
9. What made the number of emperor penguins drop greatly?
A. Humans’ destruction. B. The environmental pollution.
C. The development of globalization. D. The climate and weather conditions.
10. What is Trathan’s attitude towards the future of emperor penguins?
A. Concerned. B. Indifferent. C. Positive. D. Disappointed.
11. What is the passage mainly about?
A. The habitat of emperor penguins. B. The damage that global warming causes.
C. The place where emperor penguins breed. D. The worrying living conditions of emperor penguins.
根据第三段第一句“Scientists say that storms, winds and warmer weather break apart the ‘fast ice’ (sea ice that is connected to land where emperor penguins stay to breed), which leads to the sharp drop in numbers.”
故选A。
D
I remember that guy very well. He can drink more than his usual share of beer, eat an entire Italian pizza, an ice cream, and add a big sweet cookie. The next morning, he remains to be there without gaining a pound in weight. A new study suggests that people have different responses to the same food. “If you have two people who are given the same exact diet, they won’t necessarily weigh the same,” says Dr. Judith Korner, director at the Weight Control Center at Columbia University Medical Center.
Good genes work greatly. If you are not happy with the way your body looks when you keep your healthy diet, that is because of your mom and dad. Dr. Korner says your genes decide your weight first. If you try to change that weight, your body surely fights against it. Wherever you are from, if you feed your body over, there are changes in the body that try to get them back to their normal weight. The body will try to burn up that extra food.
They’re eating less energy-dense foods. A pound of lettuce may weigh the same as a pound of fried chicken, but they certainly don’t have the same influence on the body. That thin friend who’s constantly eating might actually be eating foods that are lower in energy than you think. It can look like someone’s eating a lot; maybe they’ll have this big bowl in front of them, but the bowl may contain a salad of beans, chicken, and no spices. It looks like they’re just chewing and chewing and chewing, but their foods contain less energy. There are people who say they eat whatever they want without gaining weight. They’re not lying.
So please remember the best diet is always the one that works for you, not someone else’s plan.
12. What do Korner’s words suggest in Paragraph 1?
A. People needn’t have the same diet.
B. People have different weights with different diets.
C. People’s bodies respond differently to the same food.
D. People have the same weight if they have the same diet.
13. What is the first important factor in deciding your weight?
A. Your daily exercise. B. Your food amounts.
C. Your eating habits. D. Your genes from parents.
14. What kind of food might the thin friend usually eat?
A. Only some vegetables. B. High energy food.
C. Low energy food. D. No meat food.
15. In the passage, the author suggests that we should .
A. have our own right diet B. learn and copy the diet of the thin
C. do more exercise to change our genes D. choose a big bowl for low energy food
根据第一段第四、五句“A new study suggests that people have different responses to the same food. ‘If you have two people who are given the same exact diet, they won’t necessarily weigh the same,’ says…”
Korner says your genes decide your weight first.”
根据第三段第三、四、五句“That thin friend who’s constantly eating might actually be eating foods that are lower in energy than you think… but their foods contain less energy.”

had a photo taken是have sth. done结构,意为“让别人做某事”,其中taken是过去分词作宾补,宾语a photo与take之间是被动关系。
