When people are living with Alzheimer’s, sometimes one of the most terrible parts for them is watching everything they knew and loved about their life disappearing. That can include their memories, and their ability to do their job and live on their own.
When Doron Salomon’s mum was already living with Alzheimer’s for years, she was allowed to stay working at her supermarket job for five additional years, and according to her son, that made a huge influence on her life, and how long she was able to keep a part of herself going even as the disease progressed.
Doron Salomon tweeted(发推特) on Sunday that his 62-year-old mum was even offered regular retraining by Sainsbury supermarket to ensure she could carry on. Salomon’s mum, a former bookkeeper, is now employed to work at information desk.
Salomon said that this had a huge benefit as even her personality started to change. “It just gave her a real sense of purpose. It normalized(使正常化) her. A lot of her friends have jobs and go to work and the fact she was doing something similar made her feel like a normal person,” he said.
Doron Salomon tweeted on March 4, 2019: Sainsbury has seen my mum deteriorate(恶化) to the point that every day for the last year or so she has gone into the store confused, as if she’d never been there before. It has always stood by her, going above and beyond to make sure she’s happy and feeling valued. Now my mother is very happy. All this is because of Sainsbury. I will never forget what Sainsbury has done.
She would often arrive at the store unpleased, but Salomon said the store always made sure she was looked after. The supermarket even allowed her to adjust her work hours to her sleep pattern.
In a statement, a Sainsbury’s spokesperson said, “Doron’s mum was a much loved colleague and an inspiration to all of us. We’d like to thank her for her years of service and wish her all the best for the future.”

She lost her desire for food. She was in low spirits. Something didn’t seem right over the last few days with Szenja, a lovely 21-year-old polar bear at Sea World in San Diego.
Then, she died suddenly on Tuesday, “This is a very difficult day for all of us,” Al Garver, Sea World’s vice president, said in a statement. “It not only touched the hearts of those who have cared for her over the last two decades, but also the millions of guests who had the chance to see her in person.”
A necropsy(尸体剖检) will help determine why Szenja died, but animal activists think they already know.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA 善待动物组织) says that Szenja died because Sea World sent her “best friend” — another female polar bear named Snowflake — away to the Pittsburgh Zoo PPG Aquarium for breeding(繁殖) in late February. The two bears had lived together at Sea World for a very long time.
Tracy Reiman, PETA executive vice president, said, “After losing her companion when Sea World shipped Snowflake to the Pittsburgh Zoo in order to breed more polar bears, Szenja did what anyone would do when they lost all hope, she gave up.” PETA had quickly reacted when Sea World announced the plan to move Snowflake to Pennsylvania.
PETA president Ingrid Newkirk sent a letter to Sea World CEO Joel Manby saying that the move would leave Szenja “sad and alone”.
“Snowflake and Szenja have already lost everything that’s natural and important to them,” Newkirk wrote. “Please do not add to their suffering and sentence more polar bears to an unhappy and hopeless fate by moving forward with this wrong plan.”
More than 56,000 people signed an online project asking Sea World not to separate the “polar bear best friends”.
Sea World explained its involvement in a global breeding program. In the statement, Sea World said Szenja was an ambassador(大使) for polar animals and raised awareness of polar bears for nearly 50 million guests. She was also used for science, taking part in studies on polar bear hearing sensitivity and social habits.
8. What does the underlined word “It” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Szenja’s loveliness. B. Szenja’s sudden death.
C. Szenja’s poor physical condition. D. Szenja’s expected and natural death.
9. What’s the real reason for Szenja’s death?
A. Diseases of the old.
B. Unfair treatment of zoo raisers.
C. The regular breeding visits that she must take.
D. Too much sadness that she felt after losing her companion.
10. What can be inferred from the passage?
A. Szenja made a great contribution to increasing the number of the polar bears.
B. Sending Snowflake away was a way of keeping the balance of nature.
C. Lots of people didn’t agree with Sea World’s plan on sending Snowflake away.
D. Ingrid Newkirk hoped that Sea World would send Snowflake and Szenja away together.
11. What is the purpose of the last paragraph?
A. To show the contributions of Szenja.
B. To show the importance of the wild polar bear.
C. To introduce some basic information of Szenja.
D. To show the stronger connection between these two polar bears.

It’s good to have friends that we can talk to and share our thoughts and opinions with. More importantly, they’re people we can ask for help or advice, but recently it seems many of us are developing a new relationship with a mystery person that we’ll never meet.
I’m talking about virtual assistants or bots-pieces of software that we can talk to and it can talk back to us. It might be on your phone or computer or even a smart speaker. They are changing the way we interact with technology — instead of typing on a computer keyboard or tapping on a tablet, we can now speak and a voice will answer.
The people behind these voices are called conversation designers. Tom Hewitson is one of them. He told the BBC “this is kind of changing computers into agents. They’re an active participant in the interaction and in leading you to make the right decision.” So he’s saying this cutting-edge technology has the ability to think for itself and make its own decisions.
It is a scary thought that this virtual voice can think for you — will it stop us using our own brains and will we lose the ability to write things down or type? They are certainly clever, helping you to book train tickets, give you the latest weather news or even tell you a joke. But are they really your new best friends?
One thing we can’t do yet is to make chit-chat or small talk with it. We have to change the way we speak. As Tom Hewitson says, “We will develop our own kind of particular language for speaking with machines that will be subtly different from how we speak to other people. It can be much more to the point.”
But there’s no doubt this technology will soon be common in our lives. Last year Google Duplex was revealed, described by the company as artificial intelligence “for achieving real-world tasks over the phone”. It’s a type of chatbot that will allow you to, for example, chat to your hairdresser about when they can fit you in for a cut. Other companies are working on similar things. But before they perfect this new technology, don’t forget who your real friends are!
12. How are virtual assistants changing the way we interact with technology?
A. They can make responses to us. B. They help us solve daily problems.
C. They prevent us using our brains. D. They make us lose the ability to write.
13. Which of the following will Tom Hewitson agree with?
A. Virtual assistants are helpful to people.
B. Virtual assistants are cleverer than people.
C. Virtual assistants can make decisions for people by themselves.
D. Virtual assistants have changed the basic function of computers.
14. How does the author feel about virtual assistants?
A. Skeptical. B. Puzzled. C. Concerned. D. Optimistic.
15. For what purpose does the author write the passage?
A. To introduce the benefits of virtual assistants.
B. To say the new technology still needs improving.
C. To remind people not to forget real friends due to technology.
D. To show the great changes that virtual assistants bring to our life.

第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
The word “hoarding”(囤积) might bring to mind relatives or neighbors whose houses are overfilled with junk.
16 They keep too many goods to the point of anxiety and mental disabilities.
17 When there isn’t a steady supply of resources, people hoard. Everyone hoards, even during the best of times. People like to have beans in the cupboard, money in savings and chocolates hidden from the children. These are all hoards.
Similarly, kangaroo rats in the desert hide seeds the few times it rains and then dig them back up later. 18
Similarities between human behavior and these animals’ reflect a deep-rooted ability of brains to motivate us to acquire and save resources that may not always be there. People take home toilet paper, bottled water or food during a pandemic(流行病); animals hide food for later consumption. 19
My colleagues and I have found that stress seems to signal the brain to switch into “get hoarding” mode. For example, a kangaroo rat will act very lazy if fed regularly. But if its weight starts to drop, its brain signals to release stress hormones, which leads to the hiding of seeds all over the cage. A kangaroo rat will also increase its hoarding if a neighboring animal steals from it.
20 If in our lab studies my colleagues and I make them feel anxious, the study participants want to take more stuff home with them afterward.
A. People do the same.
B. Hoarding is a bad habit.
C. However, their hoarding differs a little from humans’.
D. Squirrels work all fall to hide nuts to eat for the rest of the year.
E. But hoarding is actually a totally normal and adaptive behavior.
F. All of these behaviors are motivated by a deeply felt drive to feel safer.
G. A small percentage of people suffer from what psychologists call “hoarding disorder”.
【语篇解读】本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了人类和动物之间一个共有的特性-囤积东西。
16. 参考答案G【解析】根据下文“They keep too many goods to the point of anxiety and mental disabilities.(他们过分囤积货物,以至于到了产生焦虑和心理障碍的地步)”可知,G项(一小部分人患有心理学家所说的“囤积症”)与下文衔接,符合语境。空后句子中的they指的就是G项中的A small percentage of people,故选G。
17. 参考答案E【解析】根据第一段内容可知,过分囤积货物会导致焦虑和心理障碍;再根据下文“When there isn’t a steady supply of resources, people hoard. Everyone hoards, even during the best of times.”可知,当没有稳定的资源供应时,人们就会囤积。即使是在最好的时候,每个人都囤积。所以E项(但囤积实际上是一种完全正常的适应性行为)既与上文第一段形成转折,又能引起下文,符合语境,故选E。
18. 参考答案D【解析】根据上文“Similarly, kangaroo rats in the desert hide seeds the few times it rains and then dig them back up later.”及下文Similarities between human behavior and these animals’可知,第三段具体说明不同动物表现的囤积行为,所以D项(松鼠在秋天忙着把坚果藏起来,为一年里剩下的日子做准备)符合语境,故选D。
19. 参考答案F【解析】根据上文的关键词motivate可知,本段讲的是导致囤积行为的原因。所以F项(所有这些行为都是由一种强烈的安全感驱动的)符合本段内容,故选F。
20. 参考答案A【解析】文章第五段以更格卢鼠为例,说明导致更格卢鼠囤积行为的原因;再结合下文“If in our lab studies my colleagues and I make them feel anxious, the study participants want to take more stuff home with them afterward.”可知,人在压力下,也会有囤积行为。所以A项(人们也一样)承上启下,符合语境,故选A。

The blind man was found after three days with the help of so many people and his son expressed his heartfelt gratitude to all the people for what they had done.
