I used to hate running. It seemed too hard, and pushing outside my comfort zone was not what I was    16    to do. My husband Charles had been a serious competitive    17    for many years. After our marriage, he wouldn’t    18    talking about how much he missed it. So he picked it up again, and after about a year, I started to    19    him at the track. Just a few weeks later, Charles    20 us both up for a five-kilometer race. I    21    about doing it. It was too soon.

But on race day, there I was. The gun    22   . Thousands of runners pushed forward. The first kilometer was tough. “I don’t think I’m gonna make it.” I was already breathing    23    and painfully aware of the group of runners pounding past me. “No, you’re doing great,” said Charles. He was trying to encourage me, to get me focused on something else    24    my discomfort. “I can’t,” I said, barely audibly (听得见地). He tried a    25    way to persuade me. “Just make it to that house and let’s see how you    26   .”

After another minute I saw the three-kilometer mark. All I could think of was that I was dying and that my husband made me    27   . Miserable doesn’t even begin to describe how I felt. “You’ll be fine. You’ve got less than a kilometer to go.” I rounded a corner, and saw both sides of the street    28    with people watching the race, all cheering the runners on. I willed my    29    to keep going. Then I looked up and saw the clock. The seconds ticking away gave me    30   . I knew that if I    31    finished this race I would achieve something.    32   , I straightened up and kicked it. I had my arms held higher when I passed through the finish line. A volunteer    33    a medal around my neck.

“You did great! I’m so proud of you!” Charles was    34    that I’d made it. “That was AMAZING! I want to do another race. This running stuff is amazing!” I proudly    35    my medal as we walked to the post-race festivities. My lungs and my comfort zone both expanded.

         O. Henry was a pen name used by an American writer of short stories. His real name was William Sydney Porter. He was born in North Carolina in 1862. As a young boy he lived an exciting life. He did not go to school for very long, but he managed to teach himself everything he needed to know. When he was about twenty years old, O. Henry went to Texas, where he tried different jobs. He first worked on a newspaper, and then had a job in a bank. When some money went missing from the bank, O. Henry was believed to have stolen it. Because of that, he was sent to prison. During the three years in prison, he learned to write short stories. After he got out of prison, he went to New York and went on writing. He wrote mostly about New York and the life of the poor there. People liked his stories, because simple as the tales were, they would finish with a sudden change at the end, to the readers' surprise.

With a $5.9 billion budget and a decade of planning behind it, the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo had been expected to draw 11,000 of the world’s elite athletes and more than 600,000 tourists when it starts in late July. But with the coronavirus spreading rapidly, and Japan having already closed schools and canceled public events, the International Olympic Committee is reportedly assessing its options — including a games with few, if any, spectators.

That prospect is becoming less unthinkable by the day. Some U.S. college basketball, European soccer, and Japanese baseball teams are competing in empty venues. The annual Formula One race in Bahrain on March 22 will be run without any fans.  Even the Olympic torch-lighting ceremony, which usually takes place in Greece amid much fanfare, is scheduled to occur this week without spectators.

For organizers, an Olympics behind closed doors may be the best of a bunch of bad options. It would satisfy the athletes and, equally important, the media companies that pay the IOC billions to broadcast the events — but only if they happen.

What’s more, in-person fans are a diminishing source of revenue. When Atlanta hosted the 1996 Summer Games, tickets accounted for 25% of the budget. In Tokyo, they are half that. In a sign of things to come, Japan’s bid for the 2022 World Cup included technology to broadcast the matches worldwide using holograms, meaning a packed stadium in Brazil could see the games unfold on the field much like those seeing the real event in Osaka.

“If it’s an issue of people physically being unable to go to the games, that’s not as big an issue as people [not] watching the games through broadcasts,” says Harvey Schiller, a longtime sports and media executive who ran the U.S. Olympic Committee from 1990 to 1994. Of the $5.7 billion the IOC earned in the last four-year Olympic cycle, almost three-quarters came from media companies. An additional 18% came from top-tier sponsors, most of which are locked into the Olympics far beyond 2020.

    41. According to the first paragraph, it is clear that ______.

    A. Japan has decided to cancel the 2020 Summer Olympics.

    B. more than 600,000 tourists have visited Japan in the past decade.

    C. it has taken Japan 10 years to prepare for the Olympic Games.

    D. the IOC has decided to hold the games with no audience.

    42. The underlined word “elite” in Paragraph 1 probably means ______.

    A. excellent   B. beautiful  C. enthusiastic D. important

    43. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 2?

    A. Many events have taken place around the world.

    B. Many examples are given where there are games without spectators.

    C. The 2020 Summer Olympic games in Tokyo will be put off.

    D. The Olympic torch-lighting ceremony will be held in Japan.

    44. It can be inferred from Paragraph 4 that ______.

    A. the revenue percentage from selling tickets has been going down

    B. 2022 World Cup will take place in Brazil

    C. the 1996 Summer Olympics was held in Atlanta

    D. high tech will play an important role in the 2020 Summer Olympics

    45. According to the passage, who paid the most money for the Olympic Games?

    A. The audience.     B. The sponsors.

    C. The host country.    D. The media companies.

    C

Social media is one of the fastest-growing industries in today’s world. Your friends’ lives may look more exciting than yours on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, but new research shows it is because they are faking (伪造) it.

A recent survey has found around two-thirds of people on social media post images to their personal information to make their lives seem more adventurous. And more than three quarters of those asked said they judged their peers based on what they saw on their Instagram, Snapehat or Facebook pages.

The British survey, by smart phone maker HTC, found that, in order to make our own pages and lives appear more exciting, six percent also said they had borrowed items to include in the images in order to pass them off as their own. More than half of those surveyed said they posted images of items and places purely to show off, causing jealousy among friends and family.

Behavioral psychologist Hemmings said the trend was unsurprising due to the rise of social media. “We’re living in a world of instant communication.” she said. “Fashion and style used to live and die in magazines; now people are in search of authentic, peer-to-peer recommendations as well, making social media an equal power house to magazines and newspapers.”

“With images being shared in an instant, we desire to know what our friends are wearing, or what super stars are buying, as soon as they have got them.” Such is the influence of social media sites like Instagram, 76 percent of those asked also said seeing items on social media influences them to buy them, with men more likely to take style advice and buy what they see.

    46. How did most of the people judge their friends according to the survey?

    A. By seeing their real lives.

    B. By seeing their posts on social media.

    C. By asking their neighbours.

    D. By faking their posts on social media.

    47. How do some people make their lives appear more exciting?

    A. By buying pictures.

    B. By posting images.

    C. By making up stories.

    D. By risking their lives.

    48. What does the underlined word “jealousy” in Paragraph 3 mean?

    A. Adventure. B. Conflict.    C. Envy.     D. Misunderstanding.

    49. What can we learn from Hemmings?

    A. The trend reflects the development of social media.

    B. Fashion and style no longer exist in magazines.

    C. Magazines and newspapers are less important.

    D. The trend is beyond people’s expectation.

    50. Which of the following best describes social media like Instagram?

    A. Positive.   B. Creative.    C. Persuasive. D. Honest.

    II(非选择题  25分)

    第三部分:写作(共两节;满分25分)

    第一节: 阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

Being a mother is apparently not like it was in the good old days.

Today’s parents yearn for the golden age that their own mothers enjoyed in the 1970s and 1980s, researchers found. Mothers have less time to themselves and feel under greater pressure to handle work and family life than the previous generation. As a result, 88 per cent said they felt guilty about the lack of time they spent with their children.

The survey of 1,000 mothers also found that more than a third said they had less time to themselves than their mothers did – just three hours a week or 26 minutes a day. And 64 per cent said this was because they felt they ‘had’ to go out to work, while nearly a third (29 per cent) said they were under constant pressure to be the ‘perfect mother’, the report found.

A separate report examining childcare in the leading industrialised nations found that working mothers in Britain spend just 81 minutes a day caring for their children as a ‘primary activity’. Mothers who stay at home, on the other hand, manage twice as much time – more than two and a half hours – looking after their offspring, according to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.

Critics say the pressure on women to work long hours, and leave their offspring in the hands of nurseries or childminders, is putting the well-being of their children at risk.

The study also reveals that, despite the fact that more and more modern mothers go out to work, the burden of childcare still falls on them - even if their husband is not in work. A father who is not in work tends to spend just 63 minutes a day looking after his child - 18 minutes less than a mother who goes out to work. Working fathers spare less than three quarters of an hour with their children.

    51. What might be the title of this passage?(No more than 10 words)

    52. The underlined phrase in Paragraph 2 may have a similar meaning as ______.(No more than 5 words)

    53. What is the problem that the modern mothers have in raising their children?(No more than 10 words)

    54. What is the critics’ opinion of working mothers’ not giving enough care to their children?(No more than 10 words)

    55. What fact is revealed about fathers and what is your opinion about the fact?(No more than 20 words)
