    专练(8)
1.It had been a "long" and hard walk from home to the subway station for teenager Mandy Chan when she first put on hanfu in public. Chan is one of the founders of hanfu in Hong Kong. "It was a set(套装)with a cream-colored shirt, a brown jacket in China's Ming dynasty style and a red pleated skirt made by me," she recalled recently, almost 10 years later.
It was not the looks from others but her limited knowledge on the traditional Chinese clothing that had made her terrified. Chan added, "If anyone had asked what I was wearing, or the history behind it, I would have been afraid I couldn't tell them the whole picture."
However, her anxiety had gradually drifted (远离)away with more in-depth research on traditional Chinese culture. Hanfu was the traditional clothing of China's Han ethnic group that was formed in the main residential areas of the Han people in ancient China. The historical clothing has untold stories and ideas in every detail. The cutting and stitching line in the middle part of hanfu fits the spine of the human body and helps people to dress properly. This design, which has transcended(超越)itself as mere decoration, points to the qualities of the wearers as upright and mild individuals.
"Instead of imitating people like what I used to do, I have jumped out of my comfort zone and found the style that suits me best," Chan said. "Through hanfu, I have found myself and so many unexplored things in my life." Chan added that she had found her lifelong passion through hanfu, which is a goal and dream that has never been absent from her life. Chan found she was not alone after falling in love with hanfu. She believes that classics will never go out of style and she herself has incorporated(使并入)hanfu into her everyday life.

After graduating in 1914, he returned to China and became a famous expert(专家) in forestry science. In 1915, he advised that the Qingming Festival should also be China’s Arbor Day. His suggestion was welcomed by most people. In 1929, National Arbor Day was moved to March 12, the day Mr. Sun Yat-sen passed away, who did much to support forestry.

The tourists do not, however, see Pompeii’s people. They do not see them because Pompeii has no people. No one has lived in Pompeii for almost 2000 years.
Once, Pompeii was a busy city of 22000 people. It lay at the foot of Mount Vesuvius, a grass-covered volcano. Mount Vesuvius had not erupted for centuries, so the people of Pompeii felt safe. But they were not.
In August of AD 79, Mount Vesuvius erupted. The entire top of the mountain exploded, and a huge black cloud rose into the air. Soon stones and hot ash began to fall on Pompeii. When the eruption ended two days later, Pompeii was buried under 20 feet of stones and ashes. Almost all of its people were dead.
For centuries, Pompeii lay buried under stone and ash. Then, in the year 1861,an Italian scientist named Ginseppe began to uncover Pompeii. Slowly, carefully, Ginseppe and his men dug. The city looked almost the same as it had looked in AD 79.There were streets and fountains, houses and shops. There was a stadium with 20000 seats. Perhaps the most important of all, there were everyday objects, which tell us a great deal about the people who lived in Pompeii. Many glasses and jars had some dark blue color in the bottom, so we know that the people of Pompeii liked wine. They liked bread too; metal bread pans were in every bakery. In one bakery there were 81 round, flat loaves of bread-a type of bread that is still sold in Italy today. Tiny boxes filled with a dark, shiny power tell us that women liked to wear eye-makeup.

For Bubba, developing patience allowed him to mature as a driver and is equally essential lo his photography.
Seizing the moment is crucial loo. "Every minute things are changing—the Earth's shadow, the moonlight, the rise of stars." Batak explains. "If you lose the moment, it's gone forever. Bubba finds the physical and mental demands of racing as crucial when travelling in Utah s rugged landscapes under freezing temperatures.

Scientists say she probably died of lung disease when she was in her 40s—about 2,000 years ago—in ancient Egypt. They even have a model of her skull(头骨). And yet, the mummy's coffin has never been opened. Instead, scientists used a machine called a CT (扫描仪) to look inside.
CT scanners were developed to help doctors examine patients. But the machines turned out to be perfect for studying mummies, too.
"A hundred years ago, scientists would usually open mummies' coffins. This did a great deal of harm to those mummies," says the AMNH president Ellen V. Futter. "We just don't do that anymore. We can do so much better. By using CT scanners, scientists can know about an ancient person's diet from some of a mummy's hair. Pieces of bone can show who was related to whom."
Some mummies in Peru were buried with a skull hanging from their neck. Scientists thought these mummies wore the skull of an enemy. But DNA evidence showed that the mummies were buried with the skull of an ancestor (祖先).
The 19 mummies in the show were from Egypt and Peru. They had completely different reasons for mummifying the dead. The ancient Egyptians believed that mummification allowed an ancestor to live on in the next world. The people who prepared the Gilded Lady thought she would continue to see, hear and smell. In ancient Peru, people practised mummification to stay connected with their ancestors. Some families kept mummies in their home.
