    2.    American track and field athlete Jacqueline Joyner-Kersee once said, “Age is no barrier. It's a limitation you put on your mind.” And 50-year-old Indian Lakyntiew Syiemlieh stands an evidence for this saying. She recently cleared her Class 12 board exams. Lakyntiew, who has four children and two grandchildren, decided to go after her higher secondary education over three decades after dropping out of school. Earlier this year, she was one of the 24,267 students who appeared for the state board's Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate(HSSLC) exam. Lakyntiew took part in the exams for the arts stream and had chosen subjects like Khasi, English, Political Science, Economics, and Education as her areas of specialization.
On July 13, 2020, when the results were announced, she was excited. "Though I only got the third division(分段), my children were still so excited that they started shouting, hugging, and kissing me when the results were declared," said Lakyntiew.
In fact, the grandmother of two has expressed her interest in pursuing(追求) higher studies in the field of local language. Lakyntiew took up a distance education course offered by a university in 2015. She stopped going to school because mathematics was too difficult for her to understand. She was offered a job to teach in a preschool in 2008, and that was the beginning of her love for re-learning.
Being the oldest student in the class, most of Lakyntiew's classmates called her as "Mei", which means "mother" in the local language. Besides concentrating on academics, she also participated in after-class activities like field trips, dance competitions, and singing challenges, among others.
Age is not a problem when one is in search of education. Lakyntiew Syiemlieh is an example for everybody, and especially for those who give up studies midway.

3.When I think about ducks, I picture my mother’s pets. She saved Lucy and Fran from a very wet area when I was 16 years old. The little ducks were weak and sick. My mother helped them to get healthy.
Lucy and Fran lived in a large box in the garage. They became family pets. They were members of our family. Lucy followed me around. She quacked(嘎嘎叫) and quacked. She liked attention.
My brother Tim read everything he could find about ducks. He learned to care for our pets. He made sure that the box in the garage was fit for our pets. It had a heat lamp and a feeder. He gave them water and fresh straw each day. What a hit! Lucy and Fran loved their house. They quacked to say, “Thank you!”
On a rainy morning, Lucy walked near me to the mailbox. She walked so close that we knocked each other. I fell into a big mud hole. All the letters from the mailbox got wet. They were covered with muddy, brown water.
What’s worse, Tim watched from the window. When I got back into the house, he was on the kitchen floor holding the sides of his stomach. He laughed there.
I stomped(跺脚) my feet and threw up my arms. My mom calmly listened to me shout. “It’s okay, honey. If you prefer to, you can trade beds with the ducks!” she comforted.
With that in mind, I went to the garage and made my peace with the ducks. My own bed looked a lot better than their straw and heat lamp.

    4.    I left England for Sydney in September. It was a career move for my husband, and our 20-year-old daughter was feeling adventurous and decided to come, too. However, just before leaving England, my 79-year-old mother suffered a stroke(中风).Being strong and independent, she continued to live at home with the help of social services. But she couldn’t look after the garden. I thought how wonderful it would be if there was an organization offering volunteer help. Friends asked me what I planned to do in Australia, and I told them I would be looking for a volunteer position with a gardening charitable organization. Imagine my surprise when I found just the organization I had been looking for——Easy Care Gardening (ECG)!
There are several reasons why I volunteer for ECG. Firstly, as a newcomer to Australia I meet many great people who, like me, volunteer some of their time. We cover a large age range, but all love gardens and helping others.
Secondly, through working with ECG I have been lucky enough to explore Sydney’s North Shore that I might not have had the chance to visit otherwise.
Finally, there are all those wonderful people we call “clients (客户) ”,but are more like friends when we visit them often and tend their gardens. What great people I have met, and the stories they have to tell—the family histories, where they come from and the reasons for immigrating to Australia! I find it a privilege to have access to private gardens which, in many cases, have been the joy of their owners for many years. Each one is individual and reflects the character, needs and the history of each family. Indeed, the gardens reflect the multicultural and historical background of Sydney.

A.Her husband would work there. B.She planned to volunteer there.

3.What do the volunteers at ECG have in common?
A.They make friends with their clients.
B.They like to explore Sydney’s North Shore.
C.They are of similar ages and back grounds.

7.Susan Murabana’s travelling telescope began with a simple revelation(被暴露的真相):We all have access to the sky. We all see the same moon. At the same time, she knew that access wasn't created equal. Telescopes have been around for 400 years, but most children in Kenya had never looked through one. She thought she could change that.
In 2014, she and her partner Mr. Owen bought a telescope and started showing kids around Kenya what the stars looked like up close. Today, their Travelling Telescope program has reached 200,000 kids. It teaches kids about space and rockets online, offering workshops on 3D modeling and astronomy to local schoolchildren. “It's never been about these kids becoming astronomers,” Mrs. Murabana says. “I believe astronomy is an opportunity for kids to spread interest in other fields of science such as engineering and math, and that it is only through science that we can understand the world we live in.”
Growing up in Nairobi, Mrs.Murabana never saw astronomy as a possible career path-or even a potential hobby. “I always loved math and science, but I wasn't exposed to astronomy,” she says. She studied economics in college, and then worked in marketing. But when she volunteered in science outreach programs where she met Owen, she saw the way astronomy seemed to make kids from all walks of life light up. Soon, she began teaching kids about space through programs like Hands-On Universe, and completing a master' s degree in astronomy herself.
At Hillcrest International Schools in Nairobi, preparatory head teacher Surbhi Vashisht says the telescope has hit it big among her students, 170 of whom have participated in Travelling Telescope workshops: looking at the stars, building rockets, and virtually exploring the landscape of Mars. “The children enjoy a lot in the sessions,” she writes in an email.
