    3.    According to the revised(修改) law on population and family planning, China has announced it's legitimizing(使合法) the third-child policy, which means the abolition of its decades-long one-child policy since last century. What difference has it made, statistically speaking?
        ●0.4 billion fertility prevented
The one-child policy, officially in place since 1979, has prevented 400 million births. Parents have faced fines and other punishments for having more children. The majority of the decrease in China's fertility(生育) rate happened in the 1970s. It dropped from 5.8 children per woman in 1970 to 2.7 in 1978. Despite the one-child policy the rate had only fallen to 1.7 by 2013.
        ●21:28 baby death rate
Since the one-child policy was introduced, baby girls have become more likely to die than boys.
In the 1970s, according to the United Nations, 60 males per 1,000 live births died under the age of one. For girls the figure was 53. In the 1980s, after the one-child policy became official, the rate for both was 36. By the 1990s, 26 males per 1,000 live births died before the age of one—and 33 girls. The 2000s saw 21 boys per 1,000 live births dying and 28 girls.
●1.16 boys born for every girl
Sexually selective abortions have been considered as a major cause of China's unusual sexual imbalance.
Gietel-Basten, associate professor in social policy at Oxford University, says the births of many girls are not registered if parent have broken the rule by having two children, and officials often turn a blind eye. It's estimated there are now 33 million more men than women in China.
        ●4:2:1 families
With the ageing of China's population and the continuation of the one-child policy, a "4:2:1" home is the description given to households in which there are four grandparents cared for by two working age parents, who themselves have one child.
By 2050, it's predicted that a quarter of China's population will be 65 or older. The predicted decline in the number of people of working age is thought to have persuaded the government to drop the one-child policy.
1.When was the baby death ratio for both boys and girls equal?
    A.In the 1970s. B.In the 1980s. C.In the 1990s. D.In the 2000s.
2.What accounts for the one-child policy abolished according to the passage?
A.The decline of birth rate. B.The decrease of working age people.
C.The change of family structure. D.The rise of baby death rate

10.Over the centuries, the Khasis in the northeast Indian state of Meghalaya have learned to live in harmony with the deep valleys and fast-flowing rivers at the foot of the Himalayas.
Here, even today, most of these villages do not have road access. A trip to the closest neighborhoods requires climbing down into valleys and crossing flooding rivers. It’s hardly surprising that the need for connectedness provided the first creative urge for the ancient experiments in building the living tree bridges.
The raw materials to build these bridges are rubber fig trees since they are strong and they put out roots in the air. First, an ideal location on the river is identified for the bridge, and then young rubber fig trees are planted on either side. After a wait of 10 to 15 years, the trees are old enough to put out roots in the air. In the early stages of growth, the new roots on both sides of the river are tied to each other. As the trees grow up,they add more roots to the network, which the Iocal(本地的) people knit into a living tree bridge. In addition, the villagers stuff fallen leaves inside the gaps of the root network so they may provide nutrition for the bridge over the years.
Once I asked my tourist guide what happens to the bridges that are no longer in use. He smiled at me and said,“They’ll become a part of the forest,my friend.,
Walking on these living tree bridges,I tried to find a comparable experience. No,it did not feel like crossing a concrete bridge. No, it did not feel like climbing a tree, either. Instead,it felt like a fairy tale came to life.
And perhaps,in a way, that’s what it is. In a place where concrete bridges are unlikely to survive even a few decades because of earthquakes, landslides and floods, these bridges grow stronger with age. They do not require money to build, only time. They are breathing examples of life in the past that can help us create nature friendly lifestyles for the future.
1.What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A.The ideal trees for the living bridges.
B.The difficulty in building the bridges.
C.The creative way to construct the bridges.
D.The necessity of building the tree bridges.
2.What can we learn about the villages in Meghalaya from the text?
    A.They remain in extreme poverty.
    B.They are well-connected by roads.
C.They stay high up in the Himalayas.
D.They are threatened by natural disasters.
3.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
    A.Ancient Experiments in Building Bridges
B.The Advantages of the Living Tree Bridges
C.The Khasis : the Most Creative People in India
D.Living Tree Bridges: Breathing Examples of Harmony
4.In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?
    A.Science. B.Travel. C.Agriculture. D.Advertisement.
