Vijay Gupta is known to classical music lovers across the United States. He serves as the first violinist for the Los Angeles Philharmonic. In that job, he often plays to large crowds, including many very rich people. When he is not performing, he organizes concerts for homeless people. "They have reminded me why I became a musician." He said.

Last week, Gupta was recognized for being a founder and the artistic director of Street Symphony. The group has performed at homeless shelters, jails and halfway houses for about eight years. Gupta is among the 25 winners of the 2018 Mac Arthur Fellowship, commonly known as the "Genius Grant". Each winner will receive $ 625,000 over five years to use as they wish. The money is coming from a private group, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. It awards grants (补助金) to people whose work it considers exceptional and whose work "inspires hope in us all". Gupta said he got the idea for Street Symphony while teaching Nathaniel Ayers, a trained musician whose mental illness led to his homelessness.

The 31-year-old winner said he did not know yet how he would spend the money. He has been a performer since the age of seven and the award will give him "space to breathe, plan and look ahead".

Another winner is Rebecca Sandefur, an associate professor (副教授) of sociology and law in the University of Illinois. The Associated Press says her research actively supports new ways to involve poor communities in the U.S. justice system.

47-year-old Sandefur created the first national mapping of civil legal aid providers. It shows which states have the financial (金融的) resources to provide such aid and which don't. She also found that the cost of legal services was only one of the things preventing poor people from getting lawyers. Among the others were fears of unfairness (不公平) in the legal system. Sandefur noted that a lot of attention had been paid to problems with the criminal justice system, but more attention must be paid to the civil side of the law, which also affected millions of people.

1.Why does Gupta win the award?
A.For his achievements in classical music.
    B.For performing for large crowds.
C.For organizing a group playing for the homeless.
D.For the companionship with Nathaniel Ayers.
2.What do we know about Mac Arthur Fellowship?
A.It is founded by the government.
    B.It offers $ 625,000 to 25 winners in 2018.
C.It allows the winners to use the money freely.
D.It awards people who make great contributions to society.
3.What was the extraordinary thing that Sandefur did?
A.She made it easier to get legal help for the poor.
B.She made the legal system fairer.
C.She paid more attention to the criminal justice system.
D.She offered legal aid to the poor freely.
4.Which can be the best title for the passage?
    A.Grants winners, inspiring the poor
B.The city homeless, in need of help
    C.Vijay Gupta, an extraordinary violinist
    D.MacArthur Foundation, awarding exceptional work

Across the world, studies have consistently found that girls perform significantly better than boys in reading. These studies show that girls typically read more frequently than boys, and have a more positive attitude toward reading.

There are several reasons that help explain these gender-based differences. Parents read more with their daughters. This sends a strong and early message that books are for girls, as well as equipping girls with a significant advantage. Recent research has found even though boys read less frequently than girls, girls still receive more encouragement to read from their parents.

So how can parents and educators help bridge this socially-engineered gap for boys’ reading?

To improve boys’ reading performance, parents and educators may look for ways to connect boys with reading. This has led to discussion about the importance of promoting so-called “boy-friendly” books that boys supposedly “prefer” These are typically assumed to be non-fiction works, as many people believed that boys prefer to read non-fiction.

But this belief is not supported by recent research, which in fact suggests boys are more likely to choose to read fiction than non-fiction. Encouraging all boys to read non-fiction under the mistaken belief that it is their preference may actually be harmful. Fiction readers read more frequently and demonstrate faster language learning and higher language ability.

Besides encouraging more fiction reading, there are a number of ways that we can help connect boys with books. Firstly, don’t assume that boys of the same age have the same interests or that their interests stay the same over time. To match boys with suitable reading material, have regular discussions about reading for pleasure in order to keep up with their interests.

Schools should also provide access to libraries during lessons throughout the years of schooling. Girls visit the library in their free time more than boys, and as students move to higher grades they often have less access to libraries during class. Access to books for boys is essential to promote reading.

In addition, we should keep paper books available because research shows that boys are less likely to choose to read on screens than girls. Finally we should promote reading as an enjoyable pastime by being a role model. Let your children or students see you read for pleasure.

1.According to the author, what is the main cause of the difference in boys’ and girls’ reading ability?

    A.Social factors.  B.Teaching methods.

    C.Personal preferences.  D.Psychological differences.

2.Why does the author recommend that adults regularly talk to boys about reading?

A.To persuade boys to read more often.

B.To learn what boys are most interested in.

C.To help boys improve their language ability.

D.To show that adults are good reading role models.

3.When should schools give students additional library access according to the author?

A.Before and after class. B.At any time of the school day.

C.At regular times during class. D.When they are in the lower grades.

4.What is the main purpose of the text?

A.To show students ways to improve their reading.

B.To explain why boys are not as good at reading as girls.

C.To urge governments to provide more reading resources.

D.To provide strategies that can help improve boys’ reading ability.

Captain America and Blackpanther were about to defend Earth from the criminal Thanos when Kevin Foley first noticed something was wrong. Foley, a 46-year old information-technology worker from Kyle, Texas, was heading into the theater to see Avengers: Infinity War when he realized he was having trouble breathing normally. The same symptom struck again during another movie the following night, but more severe this time. Once the cast on the second film rolled, Foley took action: he looked at his wristwatch. It was a bigger step than you might imagine, because Foley was wearing an Apple Watch equipped with medical sensors and experimental software to track basic functions of his heart. And the watch was worried. It had, according to the display, detected signs of an irregular heartbeat.

Before long, Foley was in an emergency room, where doctors hooked him up to an ECG(心电图), which showed that he was in atrial fibrillation(心房颤动), an irregular heartbeat that can lead to blood clots(血栓), stroke and other potentially disastrous diseases. Foley spent the next few days in the hospital while doctors worked to return him to a normal heart rhythm eventually turning to a procedure called electrical cardioversion to shock his heart back to normal. Foley is doing fine now. But he believes that, if not for the warning on his watch, he might not have sought help in time. “I would have never known,” he says.

Foley and his watch were part of an experiment run by Apple and Stanford’s medical school. But beginning from Dec. 6, anyone can get an on-the-fly heart checkup, assuming they’ve paid $399 or more for an Apple Watch. That’s when Apple will launch a software update that turns its latest model, called the Series 4, into a personal ECG, thanks to an innovative new sensor. Though less complicated than hospital ECG machines, the watch version can still provide basic information and warnings of potential risks worthy of a closer look by a medical professional.

1.What was Foley doing when he realized his heart condition was abnormal for the first time?
A.He was working in the theatre.
    B.He was detecting his watch.
C.He was on the way to see a film.
D.He was equipping his Apple Watch with a medical sensor.
2.How can Foley’s wristwatch detect signs of an irregular heartbeat?
A.By being hooked straight up to an EGG in an emergency room.
B.By being equipped with an innovative new medical sensor.
C.By being paid not less than $399 for the latest Apple Watch.
D.By being accessible to Food and Drug Administration clearance for the heart monitor.
3.According to the passage, if someone wants to get an on-the-fly heart checkup, he or she________.
A.can buy a new Apple Watch Series 4
B.can purchase an Apple Watch of any model
C.can equip himself/herself with an ECG machine
D.can have his or her old Apple Watch updated
4.In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?
    A.Entertainment. B.Sports. C.Education. D.Health.
