On Monday,I stopped my car in front of my daughter Juliet’s middle school. She jumped in the front seat, feeling down. She asked me to help her study for her science test.
“Dad,I need to memorize a unit about the Reproductive Cycle of Plants. And I can hardly make it.”
“You know memorizing seems like the best way to study, but in fact you can do better in tests if you work on trying to understand the material.”
Juliet was open to my advice. It was Monday afternoon and we had two nights to study before the test on Wednesday.I suggested a plan.“Tomorrow night, you are going to teach the material to me.Tonight, read the unit.Prepare to teach.”
Asking her to teach me was an unusual idea, but I was determined to do it.Studies show teaching somebody else is a very useful way to learn.Even if you don’t do the teaching, the act of preparing to teach leads to more learning than just trying your best to memorize the material.
On Tuesday afternoon,Juliet sat down with her science book facing me and said,“Okay Dad,let’s study.” I wanted her to teach me.But false starts happened.I couldn’t be too hard on her.So instead,we started with me asking her some simple questions. She knew some but not others. When she didn’t know the answers,I encouraged her to check the book.
She started checking things that didn’t make sense. And she was actively seeking to test her understanding.I was happy to see it.She wasn’t memorizing;she was trying to understand things, which was exactly what I had hoped she would do.
( ) 62.Why did Juliet feel down?
A.Because she had trouble memorizing a unit.
B.Because she couldn’t follow her teacher.
C.Because she failed her science test.
D.Because she knew nothing about planting.
( ) 63.In the writer’s opinion, which was the key to the best learning?

C.Nervous. D.Embarrassed.
( ) 65.Which can be the best title for the passage?

C.Learning from Teaching D.Preparing for Teaching

Most adults find it hard to recall events from their first few years of life and now scientists have found exactly when these childhood memories disappear.
A new study has found that most three-year-olds can recall a lot of what happened to them over a year earlier, and these memories persist while they are five and six,but by the time they are over seven, these memories decline (衰退) fast.
Most children by the age of eight or nine can only recall 35% of their experiences from under the age of three, according to the new findings.
The scientists behind the research said this is because at around this age the way we form memories begins to change. They said that before the age of seven children do not have a sense of time and place in their memories. For older children, however, the early events they can recall are usually more adult-like in the way they are formed.Children also have a far faster speed of forgetting than adults. The findings also help to explain why children can often have clear memories of events but then forget them just a couple of years later.
The youngsters first visited the lab at the age of three and discussed six events from their past, such as family outings, trips to the zoo and the first day of school. The children then returned for a second period between the ages of five and nine to discuss the same events. The researchers found that between the ages of five and seven, the number of memories the children could recall remained between 63 and 72 percent. However, the amount of information eight-to-nine-year-old children could recall dropped to 35 and 36 percent.
( ) 66.What does the underlined word “persist” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.Change. B.Exist.
C.Appear. D.Return.
( ) 67.What can we learn from Paragraph 4?
A.Adults cannot have clear memories of past events.
B.Children can think like adults as they get older.
C.Children often forget things because they have no idea of time or place.
D.Children under and above 7 years old have different ways of forming memories.
( ) 68.From the last paragraph,we know that 9-year-old children in the second period.
A.refused to discuss the same events
B.remembered all their family outings
C.could recall 72 percent of their past events
D.only remembered a small part of their past events

X.范文:
Dear David,
I’m glad to tell you something about the changes in my hometown.
In the past,my hometown was very small and people lived a poor life. The roads were narrow and dirty. The houses were old and small.Pollution was very serious, and there was rubbish everywhere.
But now, great changes have taken place in my hometown.People’s lives are much better. The environment is getting more beautiful. The mountains have turned greener, the river has turned clearer, and the grass is everywhere. The roads are wide and there are many tall buildings. We can enjoy a comfortable life.I’m really happy to see these changes.
I believe my hometown will become better and better in the future.
What about your hometown? I’m looking forward to hearing from you.
Best wishes!
Yours,
Li Hua

There are 3 answers below.Speaking a language is like learning to swim.To be a good swimmer, you need to practise again and again. You can’t just study the rules of swimming. It’s the same as speaking English. No matter how much grammar and vocabulary you have studied,if you don’t practise,it’s very difficult to get good at it.
January 19,2025I used to have the same problem, but I feel comfortable when speaking English now.I agree with Paul.I have improved my spoken English by communicating with others. It’s helpful and fun.
January 21,2025You’d better watch English TV shows and movies and listen to the radio more. And try to repeat what you hear.I hope my advice helps.
