22.(8分)The Island Rule is ne f the best explanatins scientists culd give t the bservable phenmenn that animals and humans have evlved (演变) depending n the resurces available in their habitat (栖息地). A reprt frm BBC described the existence f what scientists call “hbbit island” ff a small island smewhere in Indnesia. It was given such a name because fssil recrds f tiny, humanlike creatures have been fund in the regin. What they called as “hbbits” r “Hm Flresiensis”, are nly as tall as ne meter and arc small versins f early human species with tinier brains.
Thugh scientists cannt perfectly trace the rigin f the “Hm Flriensis”, they believe that they arc human relatives, but it is the “island life” that has caused them t evlve as they have. Scientists have nticed thrugh fssil recrds and existing rganisms (有机体) tday that it seems if large animals grw small in islands while small animals grw large in larger islands.
In thery, animal and human bdies have adjusted t the available fd and fresh water in their habitats. Since there is n pprtunity fr them t leave their island, they might as well adapt.
New Yrk Magazine explained that islands usually have fewer predatrs (捕食者) than mainland ecsystems. Hwever, it is the lack f resurces that cause the death f many animals. As a means f natural adaptatin, the bdies f these animals have evlved smaller than their ancestrs, making their bdies require fewer resurces.

23.(8分)Binge-watching is when a persn watches mre than ne episde f a shw in quick successin(一连串,连续)". With develpments in the speed and cnnectivity f the internet, increases in technlgy and the rise f n-demand entertainment cmpanies, peple can nw have their favrite shws streamed directly t their televisin at their cnvenience.
This behavir is nthing new. In fact, " binge-watching" has been fficially listed in dictinaries since 2015. The entertainment cmpanies recgnize this behavir and many take steps t encurage it. Often, instead f releasing each episde n a week-by-week basis, an entire series will becme available cncurrently. Once the episde finishes many platfrms will display pp-ups with “yu might like suggestins, r will autmatically play the next episde”.
Hwever, recent research suggests that ut f the mre than half f British adults wh watch mre than ne episde f a shw back-t-back, almst a third have admitted missing sleep r becming tired as a result; and ne quarter have neglected their husehld chres. Next we’ll be missing wrk!
Bingeing has ther cnnectins-binge eating, binge drinking and binge smking. All f them are ften assciated with a lack f cntrl and a pssible rute t addictin. Lindsey Fussell, cnsumer grup directr, said: “The days f waiting a week fr the next episde are largely gne, with peple finding it hard t resist watching multiple episdes arund the huse r n the mve.” If peple find binge-watching hard t resist, cupled with the fact that it has shwn t lead t negligence in many, are we witnessing the birth f a new type f addictin?
The cuntless f infrmatin and entertainment that televisin and nline media can bring us is, many wuld say, a gd thing. Hwever, when the activity begins t bleed int ther areas, causing us t stp functining then it becmes a prblem. S, what's the answer? Mderatin! Neither a tiny amunt, nr t much. After all, as the ld prverb says, “A little f what yu fancy des yu gd.”

The city planner decided t build an undergrund drainage (排水) system, but there simply wasn't enugh difference between the height f the grund level and the water level. The nly tw ptins were t lwer the Chicag River r raise the city.
An engineer named Ellis Chesbrugh cnvinced me the city that it had n chice but t build the pipes abve grund and then cver them with dirt. This raised the level f the city's streets by as much as 12 feet.
This f curse created a new prblem: dirt practically buried the first flrs f every building in Chicag. Building wners were faced with a chice: either change the first flrs f their buildings int basements, and the secnd stries int main flrs, r hist the entire buildings t meet the new street level. Small wd-frame buildings culd be lifted fairly easily. But what abut large, heavy structures like Tremnt Htel, which was a six-stry brick building?
That's where Gerge Pullman came in. He had develped sme huse-mving skills successfully. T lift a big structure like the Tremnt Htel, Pullman wuld place thusands f jackscrews (螺旋千斤顶) beneath the building's fundatin. One man was assigned t perate each sectin f rughly 10 jackscrews. At Pullman's signal each man turned his jackscrew the same amunt at the same time, thereby raising the building slwly and evenly. Astnishingly, the Tremnt Htel stay pen during the entire peratin, and many f its guests didn't even ntice anything was happening. Sme peple like t say that every prblem has a slutin.
