Harmer, a prfessr in the University f Califrnia at Davis, Department f Plant Bilgy, carried ut a series f experiments n sunflwers in the field, in pts utdrs and in indr grwth chambers.
By staking plants s that they culd nt mve, Harmer shwed that he culd destry their ability t track the sun. He als nticed that sunflwers prevented frm mving were nt as tugh and leafy as thse that were free t mve. When plants were mved indr with a settled verhead light, they cntinued t swing back and frth fr a few days.
The indr plants did start tracking the “sun” again when the apparent surce f lighting was mved acrss the rm. The plants culd reliably track the mvement and return at night when the artificial day was clse t a 24-hur cycle, but nt when it was clser t 30 hurs.
When sunflwers track the sun, the east sides f their stems grew mre rapidly than the west sides. At night, the west sides grew faster as the stem swung the ther way. The team identified a number f genes that were expressed at higher levels n the sunward side f the plant during the day r n the ther side at night. A plant grwth-regulating hrmne (激素), called auxin, appears t be a key driver.
The “dance” t the sun cycle bviusly slws when the sunflwer matures (成熟) and its flwers pen up. At that pint, the plants stp mving during the day and settle dwn facing the sun in the east.
“Bees like warm flwers.” Harmer said, adding that the bees are cld-blded, s landing n a warm flwer saves them energy and perhaps feels really gd.
“The mrning warmth changes the flwers in a way t make them mre appealing t insects, perhaps causing them t release mre attractive scents earlier in the day.” he said “We’re currently testing this idea.”

A.T see hw sunflwers grw up
B.T shw what sunflwers’ genes are.
C.T study why sunflwers track the sun.
D.T check if sunflwers swing in cludy days.
2、What des the underlined wrd “staking” prbably mean in Paragraph 3?

A.They will prduce a number f new genes.
B.They will grw faster than usual.
C.They wn’t swing back thugh set free.
D.They wn’t grw well.
4、What is the advantage f sunflwers’ dance t the sun?
A.They attract mre insects. B.They save mre energy.
C.They mature mre rapidly. D.They prduce mre flwers.
