Wayne Fairchild is getting wrried abut ur trek ver the Ll Trail — 95 miles frm Ll Mntana t Weippe in Idah, acrss the rughest cuntry in the West. Lewis and Clark were nearly defeated 200 years ag by snwstrms n the Ll. Tday Fairchild is nervusly checking the weather reprts. He has agreed t take me acrss the tughest, middle sectin f the trail.
When Lewis climbed n tp f Lemhi Pass, 140 miles suth f Missula, n August 12, 1805, he was astnished by what was in frnt f him; “high muntain chains still t the West f us with their tps partially cvered with snw.” Nbdy in what was then the US knew the Rcky Muntains existed, with peaks twice as high as anything in the Appalachians back East.
Tday their pathway thrugh thse muntains hlds mre attractin than any ther grund ver which they traveled, fr its raw wilderness is an evidence t the character f tw cultures: the explrers wh braved its hardships and the Native Americans wh prize and cnserve the path as a sacred (神圣的) gift. It remains tday the same cnditin as when Lewis and Clark walked it.
The Ll is passable nly frm July t mid-September. Our luck is hlding with the weather, althugh the snw keeps getting deeper. As we climb t Indian Pst Office, the highest pint n the trail at 7,033 ft, we have cvered 13 miles in sft snw, and we hardly have enugh energy t make dinner. 23.(8分)Learning New Vcabulary during Deep Sleep
Sleeping time is smetimes cnsidered unprductive time. This raises the questin whether the time spent asleep culd be used mre prductively, e.g. fr learning a new language? Up-t-nw sleep research fcused n the stabilizatin and strengthening f memries that had been frmed during wakefulness. Hwever, learning during sleep has rarely been examined. There is enugh evidence fr wake-learned infrmatin underging a revisin by replay in the sleeping brain. The replay during sleep strengthens the still weak memry and leaves the newly acquired infrmatin in the pre-existing stre f knwledge.
If re-play during sleep imprves the strage f wake-learned infrmatin, then first-play, i.e. the initial prcessing f new infrmatin, shuld als be pssible during sleep.
The research grup f Katharina Henke examined whether a sleeping persn is able t frm new semantic(语义的)assciatins between played freign wrds and translatin wrds during the brain cells’ active states, the s-called “Up-states.” It turned ut t be that what they thught was reasnable. When we reach deep sleep stages, ur brain cells prgressively crdinate their activity. During deep sleep, the brain cells are cmmnly active fr a brief perid f time befre they jintly enter int a state f brief inactivity. The active state is called “Up-state” and the inactive state “Dwn-state”. The tw states alternate(交替)abut every half-secnd.
New evidence fr sleep-learning challenges current theries f sleep and theries f memry. The cncept f sleep that we are separated frm the physical envirnment is n lnger reasnable. "It’s false that cmplex learning be impssible during deep sleep," says Simn Ruch, c-first-authr. "In hw far and with what cnsequences deep sleep can be applied fr the acquisitin f new infrmatin will be a tpic f research in upcming years," says Katharina Henke.
The research grup f Katharina Henke is part f the Interfaculty Research Cperatin (IRC). Thirteen research grups in medicine, bilgy and psychlgy are part f the IRC.The aim f these research grups is t gain a better understanding f the mechanisms(原理)invlved in sleep and cnsciusness.

B.Separate us frm the physical envirnment.
C.Apply deep sleep fr infrmatin learning.

25.(10分) “Des my smile lk big in this?” Future fitting-rm mirrrs in clthing stres culd subtly adjust yur reflectin t make yu lk--and hence feel--happier encuraging yu t like what yu see.
That’s the idea behind the Emtin Evking System develped by Shige Yshida and clleagues at the University f Tky in Japan. The system can manipulate, r in ther wrds, cntrl yur emtins and persnal preferences by presenting yu with an image f yur wn smiling r frwning face.
The principle that physilgical changes can drive emtinal nes that laughter cmes befre happiness, rather than the ther way arund- is a well-established idea.
The researchers wanted t see if this idea culd be used t build a cmputer system that manipulates hw yu feel. The system wrks by presenting the user with a web-camera image f his r her face as if they were lking in a mirrr. The image is then subtly altered with-sftware, turning the crners f the muth up r dwn and changing the area arund the eyes, s that the persn appears t smile r frwn.
Withut telling them the aim f the study, the team recruited(招募)21 vlunteers and asked them t sit in frnt f the screen while perfrming an unrelated task. When the task was cmpleted, the participants rated hw they felt. When the faces n screen appeared t smile, peple reprted that they felt happier. On the ther hand, when the image was given a sad expressin, they reprted feeling less happy.
Yshida and his clleagues tested whether manipulating the vlunteers emtinal state wuld influence their preferences. Each persn was given a scarf t wear and again presented with the altered webcam image. The vlunteers that saw themselves smiling while wearing the scarf were mre likely t reprt that they liked it, and thse that saw themselves nt smiling were less likely.
“The system culd be used t manipulate cnsumers’ impressins f prducts,” say the researchers. Fr example, mirrrs in clthing-stre fitting rms culd be replaced with screens shwing altered reflectins. They als suggest peple may be mre likely t find clthes attractive if they see themselves lking happy while trying them n.
“It’s certainly an interesting area,” says Chris Creed at the University f Birmingham, UK. But he ntes that using such technlgy in a shp wuld be harder than in the lab, because peple will use a wide range f expressins. “Attempting t make slight differences t these and ensuring that the reflected image lks believable wuld be much mre challenging,” he says.
Of curse, there are als imprtant mral questins surrunding such subtly manipulative technlgy. “Yu culd argue that if it makes peple happy, what harm is it ding?” says Creed. “But I can imagine that many peple may feel manipulated uncmfrtable and cheated if they fund ut.”
1、What’s the main purpse f the Emtin Evking System?
A.T see whether ne’ s facial expressins can be altered.
B.T replace the mirrrs in future clthing-stre fitting rms.
C.T see whether laughter cmes befre happiness.
D.T see whether ne’s feeling can be uncnsciusly affected.
2、What can we learn abut the web-camera image in the study?
A.It recrded the vlunteers’ perfrmance in the task.
B.It attempted t make the vlunteers feel happier.
C.It gave the vlunteers a false image.
D.It beautified the vlunteers appearance in the mirrr.
3、What des Creed mentin as a limitatin f the technlgy
A.It nly deals with a limited number f facial expressins.
B.It nly wrks in clthing stres.
C.It nly makes subtle changes t peple’s expressins.
D.It nly changes the areas arund the muth and the eyes.
4、What des Creeds cmment n the mral issues with this technlgy imply?
A.Peple shuld make their decisins independently.
B.Technlgy is unable t manipulate peple.
C.Nthing is mre imprtant than happiness.
D.Peple shuld neglect the harm f the technlgy.
