I spent many f these years wishing I were a brain in a vat (培养皿): brains in vats dn’t get let dwn by their
bdies. On accunt f the pains caused by Lyme disease and endmetrisis, I’d find myself seeking ut distractin
n a screen, trying t frget I had a bdy at all.
One day, ne f thse distractins changed my life fr gd. I came acrss a vide fr Justin Peck’s ballet
Year f the Rabbit. Frm that mment n, I fell in lve with ballet. I lnged t try dancing myself. Luckily fr me,
there was a dance studi right dwn the street frm my apartment. On a day when I felt well enugh, I gathered my
curage and enrlled in a class. Sue, the studi wner and primary instructr, lved teaching the basics f ballet.
She tk extra care t pint ut when students did smething well, and tk equal jy in the unique ways they
made mistakes.
The mre time I spent in Sue’s studi, the mre I began t relate t my bdy in a new way. Learning t dance
was a transfrmatin f mind as much f bdy. After frustrating me fr s lng, my bdy even began t be a surce
f accmplishment and pride. It made me realize that even my sick bdy had much mre ptential than I’d realized.
Being human means being vulnerable — getting sick and hurt, and getting lder t. But thse same bdies
that cause us grief als make it pssible t live full and meaningful lives. Ballet cntinually reminds me that having
a bdy — and being human — is beautiful, even when it’s hard. And it’s much mre fun than being a brain in a
vat.
4. Why did the authr wish t be “a brain in a vat” at the beginning?
A. T escape her respnsibilities.
B. T free herself frm a sick bdy.
C. T fcus entirely n intellectual life.
D. T abandn herself t virtual pleasure.
5. Which can best describe Sue’s teaching style?
A. Attentive and supprtive. B. Passinate but impatient.
C. Prfessinal and traditinal. D. Demanding but encuraging.
6. What des the underlined wrd “vulnerable” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Ordinary. B. Sensitive. C. Delicate. D. Humble.
7. Which wuld be the best title fr the text?
A. Discvering fun in a ballet studi. B. Finding strength in my weak bdy.
C. Accepting myself by fighting illness. D. Embracing my bdy thrugh ballet.
【答案】4. B 5. A 6. C 7. D

Shuld we allw mdern buildings t be built next t lder buildings in a histric area f a city? In rder t
answer this questin, we must first examine whether peple really want t preserve the histric feel f an area.
Nt all histrical buildings are attractive. Hwever, there may be ther reasns — fr example, ecnmic reasns
— why they shuld be preserved. S, let us assume (假 设 ) that histrical buildings are bth attractive and
imprtant t the majrity f peple. What shuld we d then if a new building is needed?
In my view, new architectural styles can exist perfectly well alngside an lder style. Indeed, there are many
examples in my wn hmetwn f Turs where mdern designs have been placed very successfully next t ld
buildings. As lng as the building in questin is pleasing and des nt affect its surrundings t much, it ften
imprves the attractiveness f the area.
It is true that there are examples f new buildings which have spilt the area they are in, but the same can be
said f sme ld buildings t. Yet peple still speak against new buildings in histric areas. I think this is simply
because peple are naturally cnservative and d nt like change.
Althugh we have t respect peple’s feelings as fellw users f the buildings, I believe that it is the duty f
the architect and planner t mve things frward. If we always reprduced what was there befre, we wuld all
still be living in caves. Thus, I wuld argue against cpying previus architectural styles and chse smething
fresh and different, even thugh that might be the mre risky chice.
8. What des the authr say abut histrical buildings in Paragraph 1?
A. Sme f them are nt attractive.
B. Mst f them are t expensive t preserve.
C. They are mre pleasing than mdern buildings.
D. They have nthing t d with the histric feel f an area.
9. Which f the fllwing is true accrding t the authr?
A. We shuld reprduce the same ld buildings.
B. In n way shuld buildings affect the surrundings.
C. Sme ld buildings have ruined the area they are in.
11. What is the main purpse f the passage?
A. T explain why peple dislike change.
B. T warn that we culd end up living in caves.
C. T admit hw new buildings have ruined their surrundings.
D. T argue that mdern buildings can be built in histric areas.
【答案】8. A 9. C 10. C 11. D

The rainfrests are alive with the sund f animals. Besides the pleasure f the din (喧嚣), it is als useful t
eclgists. If yu want t measure the bidiversity f a piece f land, listening ut fr animal calls is much easier
than digging abut in the undergrwth lking fr tracks. But such “bi-acustic (生物声音的) analysis” is still
time-cnsuming, and it requires an expert pair f ears.
In a paper published n Octber 17th in Nature Cmmunicatins, a grup f researchers led by Jörg Müller,
an eclgist at the University f Würzburg, describe a better way: have a cmputer d the jb. Smartphne apps
already exist that will identify birds, bats r mammals simply by listening t the sunds they make. Their idea was
t apply the principle t cnservatin wrk.
The researchers tk recrdings frm acrss 43 sites in the Ecuadrean rainfrest. Sund recrdings were
taken fur times every hur, ver tw weeks. The varius calls were identified manually by an expert, and then
used t cnstruct a list f the species present. As expected, the lnger the land had been free frm agricultural
activity, the greater the bidiversity it hsted.
Then it was the cmputer’s turn. The researchers fed their recrdings t artificial-intelligence mdels that had
been trained, using sund samples frm elsewhere in Ecuadr, t identify 75 bird species frm their calls. “We
fund that the AI tls culd identify the sunds as well as the experts,” says Dr Müller.
Of curse, nt everything in a rainfrest makes a nise. Dr. Müller and his clleagues used light-traps t
capture night-flying insects, and DNA analysis t identify them. Reassuringly, they fund that the diversity f
nisy animals was a reliable prxy (指标) fr the diversity f the quieter nes, t.
The results may have relevance utside eclgy departments, t. Under pressure frm their custmers, firms
such as L’Oreal, a make-up cmpany, and Shell, an il firm, have been spending mney n frest restratin
prjects arund the wrld. Dr Müller hpes that an autmated apprach t checking n the results culd help
mnitr such effrts, and give a standardized way t measure whether they are wrking as well as their spnsrs
say.
12. What can we learn abut Biacustic analysis?
A. It makes animal calls attractive.
B. It applies t many research fields.
D. It requires special skill and time.
13. What can be inferred frm the prcess f taking recrdings in the rainfrests?
A. Researchers trained AI mdels t imitate animal calls.
B. Researchers used AI tls t cnserve rainfrests well.
C. Agricultural activities led t a decrease in bidiversity.
D. AI tls can identify bird species as well as the experts.
14. Why did Dr. Müller and his clleagues d the survey in Paragraph 5?
A. T figure ut the species f quieter animals.
B. T cnfirm the bidiversity f the quieter animals.
C. T emphasize the bidiversity f the nisy animals.
D. T cmpare the nisy animals and the quieter nes.
15. What’s the ptential applicatin f AI in frest restratin prjects?
A. Identifying the spnsrs.
B. Mnitring the effectiveness.
C. Evaluating the bidiversity.
D. Establishing eclgy departments.
【答案】12. D 13. C 14. B 15. B
