Hunter-gatherers living alng the shres f the Bay f Biscay made hunting tls frm the bnes f at least five different whale species 20,000 years ag, the ldest evidence f humans wrking with whale remains.
Current findings suggest that ancient humans didn’t regularly use castal resurces fr fd and raw materials alng the bay, in the nrth-east Atlantic Ocean, until abut 19,000 years ag.
But we have limited evidence f hw early humans used marine (海洋的) resurces because the sea level has risen by arund 120 meters since the Late Palaelithic in Eurpe, says Jean-Marc Pétilln at the University f Tuluse-Jean Jaurès in France.
Pétilln and his clleagues analysed 83 previusly unearthed bne tls frm 26inland caves and rck shelters in suthwestern France and nrthern Spain. These tls, which were classified as whale bne, were mstly prjectile pints and spear shafts used fr hunting.
The team tk tiny parts frm each bne t analyse the chemical makeup f the cllagen prteins (胶原蛋白). This uncvered that nly 71 tls were made frm cetacean (鲸类) bnes, f which 66 were definitely whales. Abut half f these were made frm sperm whale bne, while the thers were carved frm fin, grey, blue and right r bwhead whale bnes.
The researchers tk further parts frm 37 f the bne bjects t determine their age. The ldest bject was dated t abut 19600 t 20,200 years ag. Pétilln was surprised that these tls weren’t evenly spread thrugh time, with mst being frm 16,000 t 17,500 years ag. “It’s a kind f fashin effect,” he says. “What we have is a few bjects in the beginning and then a kind f bm (激增) and stp.”
12. Why is it hard t find early evidence f marine resurce use by ancient humans?
A. Early humans avided the sea.B. Many sites are nw underwater.
C. Whale bnes are hard t identify.D. Ancient tls were destryed in wars.
13. What did the researchers find abut the whale-bne tls?
A. The majrity were hunting tls.B. All were identified as whale remains.
C. Mst were used fr fishing in the sea.D. Half were made frm blue whale bnes.
14. Why did the researchers analyze the cllagen prteins in the bnes?
A. T find ut the age f the tls.B. T study ancient human eating habits.
C. T see if the bnes were strng enugh.D. T check which whale species were used.
15. What can we infer frm the “fashin effect” mentined by Pétilln?
A. Ancient humans stpped hunting whales suddenly.
B. The use f whale bnes changed ver time quickly.
C. Whale bnes became ppular due t their strength.
D. Early humans tended t fllw thers in tl-making.
【答案】12. B 13. A 14. D 15. B
