Psychlgists have becme increasingly interested in hw switching between languages
influences thinking — a phenmenn knwn as the “freign language effect” . Unlike linguistic
determinism, which suggests a language’s structure shapes thught, this effect stems frm the general experience f using a secnd language, ften making peple mre ratinal and
      pen-minded.
Research pineered by Prfessr Baz Keysar shws this strngly influences mral
reasning. When cnsidering the “trlley prblem” — whether t sacrifice ne life t save five — peple are twice as likely t make the utilitarian (实用主义的) chice when using their secnd
language. The emtinal distance prvided by a freign language appears t reduce instincts (本能) reactins.
The effect als reduces classic cgnitive biases. Peple’s distaste fr financial lss is much less strng when bets are presented in a freign language. Speaking a secnd language can als
lessen hw easily we are influenced by hw infrmatin is framed and ur reluctance t quit
failing prjects. Similarly, the “bias blind spt”, where peple believe they are less biased than thers, diminishes when thinking in anther tngue. Over a decade f research, the effect has prven cnsistent and repeatable.
Beynd decisin-making, the freign language effect impacts memry. Recalling traumatic events in a secnd language causes less emtinal distress. Recent studies shw it als reduces
false memries: When presented with misleading infrmatin, peple are better at aviding errrs if the material is in their freign language, as they engage in mre careful, deliberative thinking
when prcessing infrmatin in a nn-native tngue.
In ur glbalized wrld, this research suggests a practical cgnitive tl. Deliberately
switching t a secnd language can help us becme mre detached and bjective. Whether
evaluating investments, prcessing persnal upsets, r cnsidering cntrversial plicies, using a freign language can prvide valuable emtinal distance and reduce autmatic reactins. Fr
language learners, this is an unexpected payff; fr thers, it’s a cmpelling reasn t start learning.
24 .What des paragraph 3 indicate abut the effect?
A .It is a surprising new discvery. B .It requires a lng time t prve.
C .It turns ut t be reliable ver time. D .Its mechanisms are fully understd.
25 .Why are peple less likely t frm false memries when recalling in a freign language?
A .They give tp pririty t crrectness. B .They get in a mre thughtful prcess.
C .They engage in mre autmatic thinking. D .They avid thinking abut difficult tpics.
26 .What is a practical benefit f applying the effect in real life?
A .Reducing autmatic reactins entirely. B .Ensuring perfectly reasnable decisins.
C.Accelerating the decisin-making prcess. D.Increasing bjectivity and emtinal distance.
27 .What is the main idea f the text?
      A .Benefits f using a secnd language. B .Discussin n linguistic determinism.
C .Necessity f learning a secnd language. D .Challenges f learning freign languages.
      C
In 1998, British adventurer Karl Bushby lked dwn a rad in Chile and set a gal: walk all the way hme t Hull, England — withut using a single frm f transprt, which was
audacius. What he didn’t knw then was that the jurney he thught wuld take eight years
wuld stretch int a remarkable 27-year trek (跋涉) acrss cntinents, ceans and histry. Nw, after walking 36,000 miles, surviving the attack f plar bears, swimming acrss seas, and
navigating cuntless visa setbacks, the 56-year-ld adventurer is finally n the hme stretch.
Bushby began his adventure in Punta Arenas, Chile, trekking nrth thrugh Suth and
Nrth America, eventually reaching Alaska. In 2006, he attempted ne f the mst dangerus legs f the jurney: crssing the frzen Bering Strait int Siberia. Armed with a gun t scare ff plar bears and frced t leap between mving blcks f ice, he achieved what few peple n Earth
      have ever dne.
His challenges didn’t stp there. Last year, when he culdn’t safely travel thrugh a
Eurpean cuntry, he tk n a new challenge — swimming acrss the Caspian Sea. With a
supprt team and c-swimmer Angela Maxwell, Bushby spent 31 days cmpleting the 179-mile crssing, swimming a ttal f 132 hurs.
After reaching Azerbaijan, he cntinued thrugh Turkey, and nw stands less than 2,000 miles frm hme. He hpes t recenter Eurpe this summer and walk int Hull by September
2026. Returning hme after nearly three decades, he admits, will feel unrealistic. He left when he was 29. He will return at 58. He says reuniting with family will mean “getting t knw each ther again”.
Bushby walks an average f 30km a day and rests wherever he can find shelter. His
missin, called the Gliath Expeditin, has utlasted five UK prime ministers, a glbal health
incident, and numerus wars — but his spirit remains as strng as it was in 1998. And the wrld is cheering him n as he enters the final chapter f ne f the mst extrardinary human endurance jurneys ever attempted.
28 .What des the underlined wrd “audacius” in paragraph 1 prbably mean?
      A .Cmmn. B .Meaningless. C .Ambitius. D .Practical.
29 .Why did Bushby swim acrss the Caspian Sea?
A .T set a new wrld recrd. B .T avid the ptential risk.
C .T shrten the distance. D .T test his physical limits.
30 .What des Bushby mean by saying “getting t knw each ther again”?
A .It is awkward t see his family. B .It is t lng since he left hme.
C .He feels regretful fr traveling. D .He wants t accmpany his family mre.
31 .What des the Gliath Expeditin symblize?
A .The pwer f spirit. B .The need fr recgnitin.
C .The meaning f explratin. D .The imprtance f adaptatin.
      D
Readers may be familiar with the humrus idea that humans are nly the third-cleverest
species n Earth after mice and dlphins. But perhaps Duglas Adams shuld have included
dlphins’ cetacean cusins. In a paper just published in Open Mind, CETI researchers describe a strikingly human-like feature in whale cmmunicatin. Sperm whales cmmunicate using a series f clicks researchers call “cdas”, which lk a lt like vwels in human languages.
Fr linguists, vwels are characterized by the free flw f air thrugh a vibrating vcal
tract. In cntrast, cnsnants invlve disruptins fthe airflw. A vwel’s basic pitch(technically called F0)is determined by the speaker’s sex and bdy size. But by mving tngue and lips we
shape the sund int higher-pitched “frmants”(F1, F2, F3, etc.). Whether we hear an “ah” r an “ee” depends n the relatinship between these frmants.
T humans, sperm-whale cdas d nt sund like pitches at all; the clicks are much t infrequent and irregular. The clicks becme a cntinuus tne nly when they ccur 20 t 40
times per secnd. But when the whales’ silences were remved in sftware, the researchers culd cnsider them as pitches nevertheless, and lk mre clsely at their ther qualities.
The next step was taken with the help f artificial intelligence(AI). The researchers used an AI system trained t learn human language t examine the cdas. Gasper Begus, a linguist at the University f Califrnia and the study’s lead authr, says that the AI led them t study the pitch
patterns f the clicks — nes that wrk like human vwel sunds.
Sure enugh, the whale cdas cntained tw sund patterns resembling thse in the F1 and F2 frmants f human vwels, but at a much lwer pitch. Based n this resemblance, the
researchers called them the a-cda and i-cda vwels. They even fund that whales culd prduce diphthngs — tw vwels gliding quickly frm ne t anther, like the ah-ee sund in English
wrds like “ride” and “time”. The whales d all this ften in what researchers call
      “cnversatins”.
Exactly what the whales may be saying t each ther remains unknwn — althugh
wrking that ut is CETI’s eventual gal. That will require a large bdy f vcalizatins t study, as well as an equally big number f bservatins f hw the animals behave and interact with each ther.
32 .Why des the authr refer t Duglas Adams’s jke abut mice, dlphins and humans?
      A .T illustrate a pint B .T give an example
      C .T make a cmparisn D .T intrduce a tpic
33 .What des the wrd “disruptins” underlined in paragraph 2 mean?
A .cmplete stps B .breaks in flw C .increases in speed D .extra energy
34 .What d we knw abut sperm whales frm the passage?
A .They cmmunicate in quite a similar way t humans.
B .They prduce cntinuus clicks that sund like pitches.
C .They create click patterns resembling human vwels.
D .They culd prduce diphthngs like “ride” and “time”.
35 .What can we infer abut the CETI researchers frm the last paragraph?
A .They have paid mre attentin t the whales’ vcalizatins than t their behavirs.
B .They have uncvered the nature f the whales’ scial behavirs and interactins.
C .They will decde the whales’ calls by bserving their behavirs and interactins.
D .They will carry ut mre research t better understand the whales’ cnversatins.
At dawn and dusk, frests appear muted and nearly mnchrmatic (单色的) t human eyes. But white-tailed deer might see a very different, aglw landscape.
Since the 1970s, bilgists have understd that deer leave signpsts — frm rubbing
antlers n trees r scraping the grund — fr scent-based cmmunicatin. 36 The
researchers scanned 146 such signpsts in Gergia using ultravilet lights. They fund that
althugh the signpsts lk rdinary in daylight, they reemit blue-green light when expsed t UV wavelengths cmmn at dawn and dusk. This likely happens because antler rubs strip away bark, revealing lignin-rich inner wd that fluresces (散发荧光) in a way bark des nt.
The visual cntrast als intensifies as the breeding seasn appraches. 37
This shift in light is particularly relevant, the authrs say, because the eyes f white-tailed deer have enhanced sensitivity t shrt- and middle-wavelength clrs in this stage, especially
      under lw-light cnditins.
Traditinally, mammalian (哺乳动物的) biflurescence has been studied as a subject f the animal itself. 38
Hwever, nt all experts are cnvinced. One skeptic nt invlved in the study nted that if humans cannt see the markings under natural light, deer likely cannt either. 39
The researchers describe the study as a first step. 40
A .But ne grup f researchers wndered whether these marks als prvide visual messages.
B .Therefre, deer rely slely n scent fr cmmunicatin thrughut the year.
C.In such perid, marks are brighter because male deer antlers have fully hardened and their rubs can expse mre inner wd.
D .This discvery suggests that biflurescence might als be embedded in the envirnment, adding a largely unseen layer t hw animals cmmunicate.
E .This argument highlights a key limitatin f the current study: its findings are based n technical measurement, nt bserved animal behavir.
F .This means that deer are likely clr-blind t red and range hues.
G.Future research will need t cnfirm whether deer actually use these visual cues in their natural habitat.

      transprt, which was audacius.
根据第三段中“Last year, when he culdn’t safely travel thrugh a Eurpean cuntry, he tk n a new challenge — swimming acrss the Caspian Sea.
根据第四段中“Returning hme after nearly three decades, he admits, will feel unrealistic. (他承认,在近三十年后回家,会感觉不真实)”和“He left when he was 29. He will return at 58. He says reuniting with family will mean “getting t knw each ther again” .(他 29 岁时离开,归来时已 58 岁。

前一句“Fr linguists, vwels are characterized by the free flw f air thrugh a vibrating
      vcal tract.( 对于语言学家来说,元音的特点是空气在振动的声道中自由流动。)”
根据第一段中“Sperm whales cmmunicate using a series f clicks researchers call “cdas”, which lk a lt like vwels in human languages.( 抹香鲸通过一系列的咔哒声进行交流,研究人员将这些咔哒声称为“尾音” ,它们看起来与人类语言中的元音非常相似。)”以及第五段中“Sure enugh, the whale cdas cntained tw sund patterns resembling thse in
      the F1 and F2 frmants f human vwels, but at a much lwer pitch.( 果然,鲸鱼的尾音包含了两种类似于人类元音 F1 和 F2 形成频率的音调模式,但音调要低得多。)”
根据最后一段“Exactly what the whales may be saying t each ther remains unknwn — althugh wrking that ut is CETI’s eventual gal. That will require a large bdy f vcalizatins t study, as well as an equally big number f bservatins f hw the animals

37.根据前文“The visual cntrast als intensifies as the breeding seasn appraches.(随着繁殖季节的临近,这种视觉对比也会增强。)”可知,前文提到繁殖季节视觉对比更明显,此空应解释原因,C 选项“In such perid, marks are brighter because male deer antlers have fully hardened and their rubs can expse mre inner wd.(在这个时期,标记会更亮,因为雄鹿的角已经完全变硬,它们的磨痕可以暴露更多的内部木材。)”
38 .根据前文“Traditinally, mammalian (哺乳动物的) biflurescence has been studied as a
subject f the animal itself.

technical measurement, nt bserved animal behavir.(这一观点凸显了当前研究的一个关键局限:其发现基于技术测量,而非观察到的动物行为。)”
40 .根据前文“The researchers describe the study as a first step.(研究人员称这项研究只是第一步。)”可知,前文说研究只是开始,此空应说明未来需要做的研究,G 选项“Future research will need t cnfirm whether deer actually use these visual cues in their natural habitat.(未来的研究需要证实鹿在自然栖息地是否真的使用这些视觉线索。)”

故填 a。
故填 where。
“aim t d sth.”
根据句意可知,“a center f trade”和“hme t envys (使者) and business peple frm utside China”之间是并列关系,所以用连词“and”连接。故填 and。
“be pen t sb.”
