Salad seeds (生菜种子) that went n a rund trip t uter space and back grew at a slightly slwer rate than the nes n earth, scientists fund, thanks t thusands f yung peple wh helped cnduct an ut-f-this-wrld experiment.
The prject started in 2015, when British astrnaut Tim Peake tk a millin seeds with him n his jurney t the Internatinal Space Statin (ISS). The seeds spent six mnths there befre they were sent back t Earth in 2016. In a message sent frm the ISS, Peake said the purpse f the science experiment was t find ut if the cnditins in space affected the seeds’ ability t grw.
Arund 600,000 pupils at 8,600 schls in the UK were then asked t grw the rcket seeds that had been t space, alng with regular seeds that had never left the planet. Peake described the experiment as “ne f the largest and mst inspiratinal experiments f its kind”.
The results f the study, which have just been published, fund that the space seeds grew mre slwly than the nes that had stayed n Earth. Researchers n the experiment said this was due t the stresses f space travel, such as the zer-gravity (零重力) atmsphere and high levels f csmic rays (宇宙射线), which slwed the grwth f the plants.
Nw researchers are hpeful that if the seeds are prperly prtected, it might be pssible t grw plants during future space tasks t ther planets. Dr Jake Chandler, frm University f Lndn, wh led the study, said, “The pssibility f eating hme-grwn salad n Mars may be ne small step clser.”
4.Why did Tim Peake take seeds t ISS?
      A. T explre the secret t gravity.
      B. T have astrnauts grw salad in ISS.
      C. T prmte yung kids’ interest in salad.
      D. T test the space’s influence n seeds’ grwth.
5.Hw did Tim Peake feel abut the experiment?
      A. Encuraged.B. Disappinted.C. Cnfused.D. Cncerned.

Afternn tea, the mst typical f English custms, is, perhaps surprisingly, a relatively new traditin. The custm f drinking tea became ppular in England during the 1660s thanks t King Charles II and his wife, and it was nt until the mid-19th century that the cncept f “afternn tea” first appeared.
Afternn tea was intrduced by Anna, the Duchess f Bedfrd, in the year 1840. At that time lunch was taken early but the evening meal was served fashinably late at eight 'clck, leaving a lng perid f time between the tw meals. The Duchess wuld becme hungry in the afternn, s she asked that tea and cake be brught t her rm arund fur 'clck. This became a habit f hers and later she began inviting friends t jin her.
This palace tea party was such a success that it sn spread t Lndn and ther places in UK as a fashinable scial event. During the 1880’s, upper-class wmen wuld dress up fr their afternn tea, als knwn as “lw tea” because tea was taken while sitting in lw, cmfrtable chairs r sfas.
While Lw Tea was largely a game fr the upper class, “high tea” was a necessary meal fr wrking class families. During the secnd half f the Victrian Perid, wrking families wuld return hme late tired and exhausted. As the mst imprtant meal f the day, the table wuld be set with meats, bread, butter, cheese and f curse, a pt f gd, strng tea t lift their spirits. Because it was eaten at a high, dining table, it was called “high” tea.
T experience the best f the afternn tea traditin, treat yurself with a trip t ne f Lndn’s finest htels. There are als a wide selectin f ld-fashined tearms ffering afternn tea experience.
We prvide very British afternn tea experience trips during yur stay in Lndn. Just tell yur tur guide when yu want t taste the culture and we will arrange everything fr yu with a very reasnable charge. It’ll be a nce in a lifetime experience. Dn’t miss it.

A demnstratin missin t test an idea f cleaning up space junk was launched this mrning in Kazakhstan. Knwn as ELSA-D, the missin will exhibit technlgy that can help deal with space junk. The spacecraft wrks by attempting t attach itself t dead satellites and pushing them tward the Earth t burn up in the atmsphere.
ELSA-D, which stands fr End-f-life Services by Astrscale, will be carried ut by a “servicer spacecraft” and a “client satellite” that are launched tgether, accrding t Astrscale, spacecraft will release and try t meet with the client satellite, which will act as a piece f space junk.
The missin will carry ut this catch-and-release prcess repeatedly ver the curse f six mnths. The gal is t prve the servicer’s ability t track dwn and dck with its target in varying levels f cmplexity. Hwever, the spacecraft is nt designed t deal with dead satellites already in rbit, but rather future satellites that wuld be launched with dcking plates n them.
Space junk has been a grwing prblem fr years. Accrding t a recent reprt by NASA, at least 26,000 f the millins f pieces f space junk are the size f a sftball. Orbiting alng at 17,500mph, they culd destry a satellite. And the mst cmmn space junk, mre than 100 millin pieces, is the size f a grain f salt and culd make hles in a spacesuit, amplifyingrisk t spacecraft and crew.
The develpment f ther cleanup technlgies has been underway fr years. In 2016, Japan’s space agency sent a 700-meter chain int space t try t slw dwn and redirect space junk. In 2018, a device called RemveDebris successfully cast a net arund a large piece f space junk. These effrts culd prve increasingly imprtant as private space prjects like SpaceX cntinue t fill lw Earth rbit in a messy way.
12.Hw will the servicer spacecraft functin?
      A. By breaking space junk int pieces.
      B. By pushing space junk twards the Earth.
      C. By adding dcking plates t client satellites.

      A. increasingB. remvingC. examiningD. transprting
15.What can we infer frm the last paragraph?
      A. Space research is becming imprtant.
      B. The functin f artificial satellites is varius.
      C. It’s necessary t cnduct the clear-up missin.
      D. SpaceX plays an imprtant rle in sending satellites.
