Fur years int the shelter jb, Stewart said he was burned ut with guilt and ready t quit.
Then ne mrning n his way t wrk, he saw a hmeless man and a dg. He treated the dg’s skin cnditin and the animal was transfrmed. The wner was beynd grateful and said, “Thanks fr nt ignring me and fr treating my dg.” “That was the mment fr me. I gt back t saving animals and ding it n my wn terms.” Stewart said.

A new study n baby birds shws that traffic nise can affect their grwth and lead t lifelng harm. The finding raises new cncerns abut the effect f nise pllutin n wildlife — and humans as well.
Researchers already knew t much nise is likely t disturb birds, making it mre difficult fr the parents t cmmunicate with and care fr their baby birds. But it wasn’t clear whether the nise itself culd directly harm yung birds.
Mylene Mariette, a behaviral eclgist at Deakin University, and her team set ut t answer that questin with birds held n campus in Melburne, Australia. Fr 5 nights in a rw, they played eggs either rad nise r bird sngs fr several hurs. The sunds were kept at a vlume f 65 decibels (分贝)— abut the same ludness as a cnversatin in a bar r city traffic. Other eggs were left in silence. After the eggs hatched, the baby birds received ne f tw treatments — rad nise r bird sngs — fr anther 9 nights. The baby birds heard the sunds in a separate rm, and then were returned t their nests.
Eggs expsed t traffic sunds were 19% less likely t hatch cmpared with thse expsed t the sund f sngs. It shws a clear effect f traffic nise, Mariette says. As the baby birds develped, they als shwed wrrying develpment signs. Thse expsed t nise grew slwer. Mrever, when thse birds grew up, they had abut half as many ffspring (后代) as the birds expsed t sngs as yungsters.
Hans Slabbekrn, an eclgist and animal behavir expert at Leiden University, ntes that these cncerns apply t humans as well. “The findings suggest that the acustic (听觉的) envirnment f birds in cities and alng highways shuld be better managed,” he writes, “and that the acustic cmfrt in hspital envirnments fr pregnant mthers and babies requires special attentin.” Eventually, the research might help reveal hw much and in what ways nise pllutin shuld be reduced.
28. What des paragraph 3 mainly fcus n abut the study?
A. Its prcess.B. Its result.C. Its difficulty.D. Its purpse.
29. Hw are the findings explained in paragraph 4?
A. By giving examples.B. By analyzing reasns.
C. By making cmparisns.D. By making predictins.
30. What d the findings indicate?
A. Mve the birds frm cities t prtected areas.
B. Make laws t clse highways and ther nisy places.
C. Educate peple n the bad effects f nise pllutin.
D. Pay special attentin t the hspital envirnment fr babies.
31. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
A. Traffic nise helps birds cmmunicate
B. Scientists have fund ways t reduce nise
C. Hspital envirnments are greatly affected
D. Traffic nise causes lifelng harm t baby birds

Bricks are ne f the ldest knwn building materials, dating back thusands f years. But researchers at Washingtn Universitya in St. Luis have fund a new use fr bricks: as energy strage units. A team f engineers and chemists have fund a way t transfrm an rdinary huse brick int a pseud-battery — allwing it t cnduct and stre electricity. The bricks are pwerful enugh t illuminate(点亮)an LED light bulb and cst nly abut $ 3 t make.
“I lve the idea f adding value t things that are inexpensive, things that are affrdable, things that we kind f take fr granted, ”said Juli D’Arcy, an assistant prfessr f chemistry at Washingtn University and ne f the researchers n this prject.
The brick battery relies n the reddish pigment(色素)knwn as irn xide, r rust, that gives red bricks their clr. The scientists pumped the bricks with several gases that react with irn xide t prduce a netwrk f plastic fibers. These micrscpic fibers cat the empty spaces inside the bricks — and cnduct electricity.
“What we’re trying t d is: we’re trying t make specialized plastics that are nly used n the nan(纳米)scale — where we use very little f the plastic, and we can actually insert that plastic inside cnstructin materials. ” The study is in the jurnal Nature Cmmunicatins.
In the future, D’Arcy says, a brick wall culd ptentially serve a duble purpse: prviding structural supprt and string electricity generated frm renewable energy surces, such as slar panels.
The technlgy is still at least a few years away frm being ready fr the cmmercial market. And right nw the energy strage capacity f the bricks is still pretty lw — abut 1 percent f a lithium battery. But the team is nw testing ways t imprve brick perfrmance — because it lks like yu can teach an ld brick new tricks.
32. What appeals t Juli D’Arcy listing bricks as their subjects?
A. Their lw expense.B. Their cmmn existence.
C. Their additinal value.D. Their internal cmpsitin.
33. What is the last step f making a brick cnduct electricity?
A. Pump the brick with gases.
B. Clr the brick red.
C. Prduce micrscpic fibers.
D. Cver its inner vacancy with micrscpic fibers.
34. What will the future bricks be like accrding t the passage?
A. Cnstructin materials pssessing lw energy strage capacity.
B. Cnstructin materials generating renewable energy resurces.
C. Cnstructin materials used fr electricity strage.
D. Cnstructin materials with built-in cmmn plastic.
35. Which wrd best describes the authr’s attitude t the technlgy?
A. Skeptical.B. Objective.
C. Cnservative.D. Cntrversial.
