[2023·广东省高三第二次月考]Skillshare is a video lesson app which has become highly popular nowadays. It will likely appeal more to older kids (age 14+) since classes focus primarily on professional development with topics like digital design, technology and marketing. There are also plenty of art and music classes for more creative learners. Read the developer's privacy policy for details on how your kid's information is collected, used and shared, and any choices you may have in the matter, and this privacy policy applies to all users.
    What is it about?
Skillshare has a large database of online lessons taught by industry experts. Kids can search for a class by topic or by entering key words. Each class contains a series of video lessons that are taught as a lecture. Some classes have only a few lessons, while others have 10 or more. In fact, one guitar class has more than 100 lessons. Many classes include projects, and most end with a brief Final Thoughts lesson to sum up the class content. There's a review section where users can leave advice. Kids can watch the lessons within that class directly from the app. They can also save classes to watch later, and any classes they begin are automatically saved to a watch list. Many classes are offered in the free version of the app, and a paid version gives users access to a much more extensive class list—more than 28,000 lessons.
    Is it any good?
All the teachers in the app are passionate about their work, so it's an excellent way to foster the same passion in your kids, as long as there is a genuine interest in the content being offered.

Seventeen young turtles raised from eggs saved from the smashed bodies of mothers killed on roads got their release back into the wild by a class of kindergartners.
It was part of a program that has saved thousands of turtles and returned them to the wild over the past 25 years. The turtles were either raised from the eggs of their dead mothers or were themselves rescued from roads, storm drains or other dangerous places over the years.
“It's a great community connection,” said Lisa Ferguson, director of research and conservation at the Wetlands Institute, which runs the program along with Stockton University and Stone Harbor schools. “It shows how conservation works, and that everyone has a part to play, from adults down to kindergarten students.”
The turtle release took place during egglaying season, when turtles come up out of the wetlands onto dry land to lay eggs, thus exposing themselves not only to natural predators, but also to the far more deadly threat of motor vehicles.
Aside from caring for injured live turtles, the Wetlands Institute harvests eggs from females killed on the road and incubates (孵化) them at 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit), a temperature that will ensure they develop as females (egg temperature determines the sex of these turtles, Ferguson said).
When they have grown enough in their first year, they are ready for release into the wetlands surrounding the institute. That's where the kids come in. Kindergartners from Stone Harbor schools get to know the turtles as they grow. They give them names, draw posters of them, and even bake and sell cookies to raise money for turtle conservation.
When it was time to set them free, some eagerly grasped the turtles from behind; others were more quiet to get up close and personal with squirming turtles and squishy mud, but each student seemed excited to see the turtles paddle away into the shallow water.
4.Why did the turtles need rescuing?
A.Because their eggs couldn't develop as females.
B.Because they couldn't walk across the road.
C.Because they lost their mother to the sea.
    D.Because their habitat was threatened.
5.What did Lisa Ferguson think of the program?
    A.Professional. B.Natural. C.Educational. D.Optional.
6.What did kids do for the program?
A.They learnt to be friend turtles.
    B.They provided turtles with food.
C.They saved the turtles from road kills.
D.They cared for the injured live turtles.
7.What is the best title of the passage?
    A.Go on fighting for them
    B.Work harder, worry less
    C.Help them, happy together
    D.Save them to save ourselves

根据第二段“The turtles were either raised from the eggs of their dead mothers or were themselves rescued from roads, storm drains or other dangerous places over the years.”以及第四段中的“..., when turtles come up out of the wetlands onto dry land to lay eggs, thus exposing themselves not only to natural predators, but also to the far more deadly threat of motor vehicles.”

If you start a sentence with, “If I were you...” or find yourself scratching your head over a decision when the answer is crystalclear, there's a scientific reason behind it. Our own decisionmaking abilities can become exhausted over the course of the day causing indecision or poor choices, but choosing on behalf of someone else is an enjoyable task that doesn't suffer the same difficulties.
“The problem is decision fatigue, a psychological phenomenon that causes harm to the quality of your choices after a long day of decision making,” says Evan Polman, a leading psychologist.
Physicians on the job for several hours, for example, are more likely to prescribe antibiotics (抗生素) to patients when it's unwise to do so. “Presumably it's because it's simple and easy to write a prescription and consider a patient case closed rather than investigate further,” Polman says.
But decision fatigue goes away when you are making the decision for someone else. When people imagine themselves as advisers, they feel less tired and rely less on decision shortcuts. “By taking upon the role of adviser rather than decision maker, one does not suffer the consequences of decision fatigue,” he says. “It is as if there is something fun about making someone else's choice.”
“Getting input from others not only offers a fresh perspective and thought process, it often also includes riskier choices. While this sounds undesirable, it can be quite good. When people experience decision fatigue, when they are tired of making choices, they have a tendency to choose to go with status quo,” says Polman. “But it can be problematic since a change in the course of action can be important and lead to a positive outcome.”
To achieve a successful outcome or reward, some level of risk is almost always essential. “People who are susceptible to decision fatigue will likely choose to do nothing over something,” he says. “That's not to say risk is always good, but it is related to taking action, whereas decision fatigue assuredly leads to inaction and the possible chagrin (懊恼) of a decision maker who might otherwise prefer a new course but is unfortunately hindered.”
“Just because you can make good choices for others doesn't mean you'll do the same for yourself,” Polman cautions. “Research has found that women negotiate higher salaries for others than they do for themselves,” he says, adding that people slip in and out of decision roles.
8.What does the author say about people making decisions?
A.They tend to make decisions the way they think advantageous to them.
B.They may become exhausted making too many decisions for themselves.
C.They show considerable differences in their decisionmaking abilities.
D.They are more cautious in making decisions for others than for themselves.
9.When do people feel less decision fatigue?
    A.When they take decision shortcuts.
B.When they have advisers to turn to.
C.When they have major decisions to make.
D.When they help others to make decisions.
10.What are people likely to do when decision fatigue sets in?
    A.They avoid trying anything new.
B.They turn to physicians for advice.
C.They tend to make risky decisions.
D.They adopt a totally new perspective.
11.What does the passage say about taking some risk in decision making?
A.It will enable people to be more creative.
B.It will more often than not end in regret.
C.It is vital for one to reach the goal desired.
D.It is likely to bring about serious consequences.

To find out what's involved in the process of reproducing human voices, I approached Speech Morphing, a natural language speech synthesis (合成) company, about creating a digital double of my own voice.
Given the complexities of speech synthesis, it's quite a shock to find out just how easy it is to order one up. For a basic conversational model, all I have to do is record myself saying a few hundreds of phrases for roughly an hour. The phrases seem very random: “That's what Carnegie did.” “I'd like to be buried under Yankee Stadium with JFK.” And so on.
But they aren't as random as they appear. “We choose spoken words that will produce a wide enough variety of sounds across a range of emotions, such as sadness and anger, to feed an AI training system. It then teaches itself the specific patterns of a person's speech,” says Speech Morphing founder Fathy Yassa.
Yassa says there are around 20 tones to choose from, and some of these can be used interchangeably, or not at all. “Not every tone is needed for every client,” he says. “The choice depends on the target application and use cases. Banking is different from reporting and broadcasting.”
The possibilities for my digital double are almost limitless. At a training session with Speech Morphing, I get to hear my digital voice double. Her voice comes at me through a pair of speakers connected to a laptop. The laptop has software into which whatever text I want it to say is typed. The software includes tools to make adjustments to the tone, speed and other vocal features that might need to be adjusted if my digital double doesn't come out sounding exactly right.
“We can already make you sound sad. We can also make you act like you're reporting and broadcasting now,” Yassa says. “We can make you sound like acting in the theatre, eventually, though we're not yet there. It is too advanced.”
12.What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A.The steps of data processing. B.The goal of the experiment.
C.The process of data collecting. D.The complexities of speech.
13.What is the requirement for the collected voice?
A.It must cover different kinds of strange topics.
B.The sounds can express a wide range of feelings.
C.Every person needs to produce around 20 tones.
D.It has to be collected according to strict guidelines.
14.What does the underlined phrase “my digital double” in paragraph 5 refer to?
    A.A typing software.
    B.A pair of louder speakers.
    C.A recording machine.
    D.A speech reproducing system.
15.Which “digital double” is probably the most advanced?
    A.Acting. B.Reporting. C.Broadcasting. D.Banking.

根据第三段中的“We choose spoken words that will produce a wide enough variety of sounds across a range of emotions, such as sadness and anger, to feed an AI training system.”
根据最后一段“We can make you sound like acting in the theatre, eventually, ... It is too advanced.”

What you call the night before Halloween may tie to your religious beliefs.
__2__ Plants and animals that are given names in any language are generally those that are relevant to people speaking the language. The relevance comes from the way that the people have interacted with the animals and plants. In some cases, this has happened over centuries.

Baby cooing is the result of babies' analysis of the languages spoken to them. __4__ Children exposed to multiple languages early in life, and growing up multilingual, develop enhanced cognitive functions. These may include the ability to focus and ignore distractions.

1.答案与解析:B 根据上文的“Although I enjoyed my new life and the time it freed up”可知,作者现在享受着生活中空出来的时间,说明生活是悠闲的。
    3.答案与解析:C 根据“a local food bank that __3__ a winter soup kitchen”可知,冬季施粥所是食品银行所经营的,给需要的人分发食物的地方。
4.答案与解析:B 根据下文“It started out to be only one day a week and took just two hours of my time.” A.energyefficient节能的;B.timeconsuming耗时的;C.heartwarming感人的;D.laborsaving节省劳动力的。
    5.答案与解析:C 根据该句中的“driving them to the kitchen”可知,作者要开车把食物送到厨房,所以要先把食物装到车上,load...with...
    6.答案与解析:A 根据下文的“preparing the cookers and dishes for the weekend event”可知,他们要为周末的活动作准备,包括食物、炊具和菜肴。故in preparation for“为……作准备”符合题意。A.in preparation for为……作准备;B.in exchange for作为……的交换;C.in expectation of期待……; D.in case of万一。
7.答案与解析:C 根据上文“The task involved going to the local food bank, ...I was also helping to sort out the food I was bringing to the charity organization.”
8.答案与解析:D 根据下文的“Sometimes, I would help serve meals; other days, I would fill in for sandwich makers”可知,作者有时候帮忙上菜,有时候代替做三明治的人,所以工作内容是不同的。
10.答案与解析:B 根据下文“Most diners would thank the people from whom they had received help.” A.generosity慷慨;B.gratitude感激;C.guilt内疚;D.greeting问候。
11.答案与解析:C 根据下文“There was never any expectation to gain public __12__ for their donations; they just did it.”
14.答案与解析:B 根据下文的“I can safely say that I get much more __15__ out of this type of activity”可知,作者从这种活动中收获得更多,所以就算是花更多的时间也是值得的。
15.答案与解析:D 根据第一段“The retirement honeymoon lasted for one whole enjoyable year. Golf took up most of my summer, curling (冰壶) in the winter,...”

Labor class, part of our school courses, is required in primary and middle schools every week Labor class, part of our school courses, is required in primary and middle schools every week. The new course arrangement stresses the importance of labor education since it strengthens students’ awareness of labor and develops their practical skills.
Now the labor course varies from cooking to cleaning and planting, of which I like planting most. Such a specific topic can always interest me because it offers me opportunities to endure hardships and get close to nature. When I’m involved in the planting process, the cycle of sowing, fertilizing and harvesting can bring me a sense of satisfaction and achievement, so I really consider it the best way to relax myself. Thanks to labor class, I’ve found my personal interest and become a well-rounded student!
My name is John and I must share with you an event which took place on Flight 1553 out of DCA. My wife and I were traveling to Miami to celebrate an achievement for her and as you can imagine, we were looking forward to fun, sun and laughter.
We boarded the aircraft, without a care in the world. It was cold in Washington and we were ready for Florida. Shortly after taking my seat, I began to feel sick. I knew something wasn’t right but just couldn’t find out what was happening. Being a doctor and a stubborn man, I resisted efforts by my wife to call for assistance. As the aircraft began its departure roll, I lost consciousness for a short amount of time. As I came around, I quickly realized a few things. Firstly, something very bad had happened to me. Secondly, the aircraft was too heavy with the fuel to go back home. Thirdly, my loss of consciousness had been so deep that I found myself out of control. So not only did I have a medical issue to deal with, but I also had to figure out how to deal with an embarrassing experience.
My wife gathered the crew as soon as it was safe to move about and I made my way to the washroom to attempt to clean up. I did my best and the flight crew members were so supportive, checking on me often and reassuring me that there was nothing to be embarrassed about. It was their sympathy and support that helped me so much. During the flight they kept watching over me and I suddenly had a small group of nurses, bringing blankets, food, drinks and caring and smile. I was thankful to them.
    注意:
    1.续写词数应为150左右;
    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
    答案
    Paragraph 1:
Upon landing, I remained in my seat, allowing other people to go first. As I was in my seat, I looked up and saw the captain standing with a warm smile. “What can I do for you?” the captain asked. I told him I was OK. I was very embarrassed and concerned because of the previous things. He said, “What size pants do you wear?” His voice was full of care. I was puzzled and replied, “34×34. Why do you ask this?”
    Paragraph 2:
Hearing that, the captain left and returned a couple minutes later with a pair of his own blue jeans. The man opened his own luggage and gave a complete stranger his pants. I didn’t know what to say. Then I looked at my wife, who smiled and, without saying a word, let me know it was OK. I made my way to the exit and he said, “Change on the aircraft. It is fine.” Because of the experience, I was thankful to him for his kindness. I made up my mind to treat others with kindness.
