The 47th sessin f the UNESCO Wrld Heritage Cmmittee pened n Mnday at UNESCO headquarters in Paris, France, with 30 prpsed sites up fr review fr inscriptin n the Wrld Heritage List, including China's Xixia Imperial Tmbs in Nrthwest China's Ningxia Hui Autnmus Regin, as well as tw prpsals fr significant bundary mdificatins f already inscribed sites.
The 30 nminated sites fr 2024 include 24 cultural heritage sites, five natural heritage sites and ne mixed cultural and natural heritage site. The Xixia Imperial Tmbs have been submitted as a cultural heritage site and represent China's sle nminatin fr this year's sessin.
The fficial designatin f the Xixia Imperial Tmbs as China's nly candidate fr the 2025 Wrld Cultural Heritage nminatin ccurred lng befre, back in March 2024. Accrding t the cnservatin planning dcument released n the fficial website f Department f Culture and Turism f Ningxia Hui Autnmus Regin n May 2024, the prperty f the Xixia Imperial Tmbs cver a ttal f 444.68 square kilmeters.
S why are the Xixia Imperial Tmbs particularly significant amng the many imperial mausleums in China?
Renwned as the "Oriental Pyramids," the Xixia Imperial Tmbs are lcated in the eastern fthills f the middle sectin f the Helan Muntains. As a ryal mausleum cmplex f the Xixia, r Tangut Dynasty (1038-1227) - a significant histrical regime funded by the Tangut peple - the tmbs cnstitute China's largest and best-preserved imperial burial site in terms f abve grund remains.
The cre site includes nine imperial mausleums, 271 accmpanying tmbs and a 5.03-hectare nrthern architectural site. Mre than 7,100 architectural fragments and exquisite cultural relics have been unearthed there, placing its scale n par with ther renwned Chinese imperial burial sites such as the Sng Tmbs in Gngxian cunty, Central China's Henan Prvince, and the Ming Tmbs in Beijing.
Chen Tngbin, a member f the Chinese Sciety f Cultural Relics participating in the UNESCO Wrld Heritage applicatin, tld the Glbal Times that the value f the Xixia Imperial Tmbs lies in prviding a unique testimny t the Xixia Dynasty, as well as the stry f the Tangut peple, which has been lng bscured by time and cnquest but nw has emerged as a testament t the multicultural rts f Chinese civilizatin.
Histrical recrds indicate that during the Xixia Dynasty, varius ethnic grups, including the Tangut, Han, Uygur and Tibetan, cexisted. Their diverse livelihds, religius practices and cultural custms enriched the Western Xia's heritage, shaping its distinctive and multifaceted cultural identity.
Wang Changfeng, an archaelgist wh has wrked at the site fr 28 years, tld the Glbal Times that the main architectural systems and frms f the Xixia Imperial Tmbs were undubtedly influenced by the traditinal culture f the Central Plains.
Specifically, they were influenced by the imperial tmb systems f the Central Plains starting with the Tang (618-907) and Sng (960-1279) dynasties. Fr example, the tmbs face suth, the buildings highlight a central axis, and the layut is as symmetrical as pssible n bth sides. The tmb cmplex includes features such as gate twers, spirit ways and stne statues, all f which are cultural elements f the Central Plains tmb system.
Despite their enduring presence fr nearly a millennium, the tmbs have nt been immune t natural degradatin and human impact. The vast and scattered distributin f the sites, cupled with nearby farms and husehlds, has psed challenges fr cnservatin.
As part f the nminatin prcess, Ningxia has launched envirnmental remediatin in the heritage zne. Plans include relcating the museum, building a heritage park, and pening mre imperial tmbs t the public, allwing visitrs t gain a deeper understanding f the shrt yet remarkable Xixia Dynasty.
These effrts align clsely with this year's brader UNESCO agenda. In her pening remarks, UNESCO Directr-General Audrey Azulay highlighted the grwing threats t heritage sites psed by extreme weather events such as flds, underscring that addressing climate change remains a critical challenge fr glbal heritage prtectin.

Bulgaria hlds the chairmanship f this year's sessin.
