A team f researchers frm the University f Califrnia Ls Angeles and the University f Califrnia San Dieg have discvered psitive uses fr AI and extra credit assignments t help imprve student perfrmance in intrductry(开端的) physics curses, including reducing the impacts f inequities, as featured in the June 12, 2025 issue f the Physical Review Physics Educatin Research Jurnal.
This study is ne f the first t explre the impact n exam perfrmance f ffering large language mdel (LLM)-based AI-generated hints during hmewrk assignments fr an undergraduate physics curse.
The study als addressed inequities in student access t fundatinal mathematics, such as trignmetry(三角学) and calculus(微积分). Black, Hispanic/Latine, Native American students, and students frm lw-incme backgrunds are less likely t have had the pprtunity t take advanced math curses in high schl, putting them at a disadvantage fr successful academic perfrmance in cllege physics.

Bth interventins(干预) were grunded in the situated expectancy-value thery f achievement mtivatin: a thery that hypthesizes that students are mre likely t engage in tasks they expect t succeed in and perceive as valuable.
Mst f the students explred the AI-generated hints feature. When available, 88% f the students used AI-generated hints n at least ne hmewrk questin (amng the prblems that were fund t match the exam questins), and 57% f the students used AI-generated hints n at least five questins. On average, students used AI-generated hints n at least 20% f the questins.
The study’s findings indicate that these interventins are assciated with increased exam scres and reduced disparities in cmpletin rates f supplemental math assignments. Ntably, the scaled extra credit system was particularly effective fr students wh might benefit mst frm additinal supprt.
Yifan Lu, the first authr and a dctral student in the Department f Physics and Astrnmy at UCLA, said:
