      (文章来源:httpsnewsfrkids.net/articles/2025/06/04/chimps-perfrm-first-aid-n-each-ther/)
Scientists have lng knwn that chimpanzees smetimes use leaves r insects as medicine. Nw, researchers studying chimpanzees in Uganda have discvered that the animals will smetimes prvide “first aid” t each ther. This suggests that chimpanzees may be able t think abut hw t help thers, as well as themselves.
Chimpanzees are ne f the animal species mst clsely related t humans. Because f this, researchers have carefully studied the lives f chimpanzees in many different ways. One area that has scientists curius is hw chimpanzees care fr themselves when they are sick r hurt.
In 2021, Dr. Eldie Freymann went t Uganda t study the chimpanzees in the Budng Frest. She was interested in learning mre abut the methds the chimpanzees used t help themselves when they gt hurt. Dr. Freymann had already dne wrk investigating hw chimps eat certain plants, using them as medicine.
As Dr. Freymann was lking thrugh ntes frm ther researchers, she nticed that there were several stries abut chimpanzees caring fr themselves r thers. She and her team decided t lk thrugh 30 years f ntes frm researchers wh had studied chimpanzees in the regin. They als spent eight mnths studying tw separate grups f chimpanzees in the frest.
The researchers fund 34 examples f chimpanzees treating their wn wunds. Often this srt f “self-care” was very basic, like licking a wund r cleaning themselves with leaves. Smetimes it was mre cmplicated. In sme cases, Dr. Freymann says, the chimpanzees “chew the plants up, and then apply the chewed material t the pen injury.”
Licking a wund can help remve dirt and ther small items that might make it hard fr the wund t heal. What’s mre, the spit f sme chimps can have chemicals that can help keep a wund frm getting infected. The leaves f sme plants can d this, t.
The self-care f the chimps was interesting. But even mre interesting were the seven cases they fund f chimpanzees helping ut ther chimpanzees. This seems t shw that chimpanzees may be able t tell when anther chimpanzee needs help. It’s fairly unusual fr animals t try t help anther injured animal.
In ne case, a teenage male chimp was seen sucking n the leg f anther yung male chimp, helping clean a wund.
Sme f the chimps wh helped thers weren’t even related. In ne case, a male chimp helped an unrelated female chimp escape frm a rpe trap that had caught her.
One big questin fr the scientists is hw much f this behavir cmes frm the chimpanzees’ natural instincts, and hw much is learned frm ther chimps.
In ne ntable case, an adult female chewed a leaf t put n her wund. The chimp’s yunger daughter saw this, and then did exactly the same thing, chewing up a leaf and putting it n her mther’s injury.
Dr. Freymann believes that sme behavirs cme frm instinct, but thers seem s cmplicated that they’re prbably learned. She plans t cntinue studying chimpanzees in rder t learn mre.

Scientists in Australia thught they had develped a new tracking device t help them mnitr magpies (喜鹊), but these birds had ther ideas.
Australian magpies are medium-sized black and white birds frm the same bird“family” as crws and bluejays. They are knwn t be quite clever. They live in grups f up t 12 birds and wrk tgether t defend the area they live in.
The purpse f the scientists’ experiment was t learn mre abut hw far they travel each day and hw their scial behavirs are influenced by sex, age, and rank. Besides, the scientists were eager t test the newly develped tracking device.
Mst trackers are t big t fit n small and medium sized birds, and small trackers tend t be limited when it cmes t data strage, battery life, and reusability. The new tracker, weighing less than 1 gram, was designed t vercme these prblems. Attached t a backpack-like harness (背带) which culd nt be remved easily, the device can re-charge wirelessly and transmit (传输) data wirelessly.
The scientists placed trackers n five magpies using their special harnesses. Things started t fall apart almst immediately. Within 10 minutes f fitting the final tracker, an adult female withut a tracker tried t remve the harness frm a yunger bird and eventually succeeded. This pattern was repeated in the fllwing hurs, and by the third day nne f the birds had trackers anymre.
Scientists refer t this as“rescue behavir,” and it happens when a helper tries t free anther individual in truble and with n bvius direct benefit t the rescuing individual. They think this is the first time rescue behavir has been reprted fr Australian magpies.Hwever, they aren’t sure if the same individual remved all f the harnesses r if thers ffered help.
The team didn’t get the data they wanted, but their experiment still prduced interesting results. That’s hw science wrks smetimes. The scientists need t try, again t figure ut a gd way t track these clever birds.
1.What can we learn abut Australian magpies frm paragraph 2?
A.They utsmart crws.B.They are scial species.
C.They are rarely sptted.D.They learn frm each ther.
2.What is a big advantage f the new tracking device?
A.It can wrk withut wires.B.It can be applied t all birds.
      C.It desn’t cme ff the birds.D.It desn’t need t be re-charged.
3.What happened t the magpies after the trackers were attached t them?
      A.They culdn’t fly as nrmal.
B.They were warned by ther magpies.
C.They helped each ther t remve the trackers.
D.They were driven ut f their hme by ther adult magpies.
4.Which can be the best title fr the text?
A.Magpies Teach Scientists an Unexpected Lessn
B.Climate Change Makes Magpies Mre Difficult
C.The Trackers Help Magpies Get Used t Nature
D.Magpies Are Adjusting t the Trackers n Their Bdies
The purpse f the scientists’ experiment was t learn mre abut hw far they travel each day and hw their scial behavirs are influenced by sex, age, and rank.
