One day in elementary schl, smething ccurred t me. A friend asked me “What are yu eating?” as she glanced at my lunchbx. “It smells,” she said, her nse crinkling(起皱).
I was eating bhindi rti, my favrite Indian snack, which my mm had packed fr me. But feeling embarrassed fr having a “smelly” lunch and wanting t escape, I quietly shut my lunchbx. That day, I went hungry.
Mst days after that, lunchtime at schl felt like a battle. If I wasn't trying t hide my lunch r bite secretly when n ne was lking, I'd insist n bringing in the same peanut butter and jelly sandwich as the ther kids. My mm, wh didn't grw up eating American fd like chips, tried her best, but the sandwiches never lked r tasted as gd as the fd I enjyed at hme.
I didn't knw that I wasn't alne. Many kids with immigrant parents encunter(遭遇) what's knwn as “the lunchbx mment” at schl: the experience f being judged fr bringing in fd cnsidered culturally diverse and s being made t feel like an utsider.
Fr this article, I talked with kids wh culd relate. But they als surprised me: They dealt with “the lunchbx mment” differently than I did. Fr example, Satya Singh, 6, wh takes her mm's Indian cking t lunch mst days, tld me that ne day a classmate said that her al, r ptates, lked like pp. Anther time, smene said that the dal, r lentils, lked like puke. The next day, Satya brught enugh dal t share with her entire class—and they lved it. “Frm then n”, she says, “my teacher at schl made a rule: Dn't yuck smene's yum.”
Lking back, I wish I'd had the wisdm f Satya and ffered my friend a bite f my lunch, r just tld her it was delicius—especially because nw, as an adult, I see that Indian fd is universally accepted and lved by my friends. Sme even try t ck Indian lentils r chickpeas at hme! And when I'm hungry, guess what? I miss my mm's bhindi rti and her care in making it fr me. Fd is an expressin f culture, traditin, family and lve. And that's smething t celebrate, nt hide.
4.Why did the writer g hungry ne day in elementary schl?

A.She enjyed the lunchtime at schl.
B.Her parents are immigrants frm India.
C.She liked peanut butter and jelly sandwiches best.
D.She wuld bite her bhindi rti quickly when smene was lking.
6.Hw did Satya deal with “the lunchbx mment”?
A.She threw away her lunchbx.
B.She asked her teacher t make a rule.
C.She ate American fd instead f her mm's Indian cking.
D.She brught mre Indian cking t share with her classmates.
7.What des the authr want t tell us?

Cming t a new cuntry, these peple find they d nt have the same psitins as they had back hme. They find themselves withut any identity. They have t build a new self-image.
Culture shck gives rise t a feeling f helplessness. This feeling may be hmesickness. When hmesick, peple feel like staying inside all the time. They want t prtect themselves frm the strange envirnment, and create an escape inside their rm fr a sense f security(安全). This escape des slve the prblem f culture shck fr a shrt time, but it des nthing t make the persn familiar with the culture. One thing that sets humans apart frm ther members f the animal kingdm is ur tendency t develp custms and traditins. Here are sme diverse custms frm arund the wrld.
An dd custm assciated with the United States is its cmplicated tipping culture. Unlike many ther cuntries that dn't tip at all r that nly tip in small amunts when the fd is particularly gd, tipping is actually mandatry at mst restaurants in the US. In ther wrds, custmers have a duty t leave between 10 and 20 percent f the bill as a tip. Waitstaff rely n these tips earning a living because legal wages fr waiters are lw. Furthermre, there are rules fr tipping bartenders(酒吧侍者), delivery peple and ther service persnnel. While sme criticize this practice fr being unreasnable, there's n dubt that tipping culture in the US encurages waiters and waitresses t prvide better service.
Sme cuntries find the act f pinting with the index finger(食指) t be rude. While members f mst cultures wuld prbably agree that pinting with fingers, bth literally and figuratively, isn't exactly the mildest thing in the wrld, in cuntries like Malaysia and Indnesia, this gesture can be seen as incredibly ffensive. Meanwhile, the Japanese simply slurp their ndles withut twirling them first, an act that is naturally nisier than the frmer. Making slurping sunds when eating ndles in Japan is a way f indicating that yu're really enjying them. Sme scientists even argue that slurping invites air int the muth and actually enhances the ndles' flavr.
12.What des the underlined wrd “mandatry” in paragraph 2 prbably mean?
A.Required by traditin. B.Highly spken f.
C.Changeable ver time. D.Ppular amng peple.

A.Skipping tipping in the USA. B.Twirling ndles arund the frk in Africa.
C.Pinting with the index finger in Indnesia. D.Making sunds while eating ndles in Japan.
15.Where is this text prbably taken frm?
A.A research paper. B.A ppular magazine.
C.A travel brchure. D.An nline advertisement.

The next mrning, the car was buried in snw. Everything was dark. Panic set in. Staying in the car wuld kill us. We managed t get ut, trying t find a farm we'd passed, but it was hpeless. The strm changed everything. The sky and the rad were indistinguishable. Rini was fading. I kept him ging, with whatever wrked. Finally, we stpped at a barn(谷仓). I felt ready t die. At that mment, I heard what sunded like a dg bark. Then a figure came twards us. “Are yu bth crazy? Out fr a walk in this weather?” the man shuted.
