    It was abut 10:15 p.m. when Janice Espsit gt ff the train at Bellprt, New Yrk, and then she gt int her car and began driving hme. She had traveled the rute s many times that she almst drve autmatically: a left n Statin Rad, then a left n Mntauk Highway, and then—bang! Out f nwhere a car crashed int Espsit’s car, pushing her backward sme 100 feet nt the railrad tracks.     As it happened, Pete Di Pint was getting ready fr bed when he heard the crash cming frm nt far utside his bedrm windw. The vlunteer firefighter and retired teacher, Di Pint, 64, never stpped t think. He grabbed a flashlight and rushed ut. “Any firefighter wuld have dne what I did,” he said. “We’re always n duty.”
    The first car he came upn 2,000 feet frm his frnt yard was the ne that had hit Espsit. Once making sure the driver was OK, he lked arund and sptted Espsit’s car straddling (横跨) the railrad tracks. And then he heard a bell sund, which signaled a cming train. Di Pint rushed t Espsit’s car and hit the driver’s side windw. She just lked at him. “I dn’t knw where I am,” she said.
    “Yu’re n the railrad tracks,”Di Pint screamed. “We have t get yu ff right nw!” The train was traveling at a speed f 65 miles per hur tward them. The driver’s dr culdn’t pen due t the crash, s Di Pint ran t the passenger side. He threw pen the dr, pushed aside the airbags, seized the victim’s arms, and pulled her tward him acrss the passenger seat until he finally gt her ut and walked her t safety as quickly as he culd. Within secnds, the train crashed int the car. “It was like a Hllywd mvie,” Di Pint tld reprters the next day.
