Launching peple int space may make the headlines but it is little useful fr science. S when Gerge Bush redirected Americas space agency NASA, away frm scientific research and twards a manned return t the mn, many scientists were disappinted. Nw the agency has finally ffered sme small mrsels f cmfrt in the frm f fur prjects that culd accmpany effrts fr a lunar return.
The mst exciting f these is the plan fr a radi telescpe that culd be placed n the far side f the mn. Such a device wuld lk back at the early universe t the time when large-scale structures such as galaxies and stars frmed. a lunar-based radi telescpe wuld be able t detect lng wavelengths that cannt be sensed n earth because they are absrbed by the utermst layers f the planet’s atmsphere. Mrever by pinting the telescpe away frm the din f shrter-wavelength radi waves that are used fr cmmunicatin n Earth, astrphysicists wuld be able t see the early universe in unprecedented detail.
Finding alien life might als be pssible with such a telescpe. It wuld be able t map the magnetic fields f stars and explanets It is the magnetic field f the Earth that prtects its inhabitants frm being bmbarded by high-energy particles frm space that wuld therwise leave the planet sterile Detecting a magnetic field surrunding an Earth-like explanet wuld prve a prmising sign fr finding extraterrestrial life. The prpsal, led by Jseph Lazi, f the Naval Research Labratry in Washingtn. DC, is t create an array f three arms arranged in a Y-shape. each f which wuld be 500 metres lng and cntain 16 antennae. Each arm wuld be made f a plastic film that culd be rlled ut nt the surface f the mn, either by rbts r by astrnauts.
A secnd prject. headed by Michael Cllier f the NASA Gddard Space Flight Centre, wuld examine hw the slar wind-a stream f charged particles ejected frm the sun-interacts with the tenuus lunar atmsphere clse t the mn’s surface Such bmbardment prduces lw-energy X-rays that wuld be detected n the surface f the mn The third and furth prjects are similar bth t each ther and t earlier ventures drpped n the mn by the Apll and the sviet Luna missins in the late 1960sand 1970s. Sme 35 years n, reflectrs placed n the lunar surface are still used by scientists interested in gephysics and gedesy. Mst f the reflectrs are clustered clse t the lunar equatr. The prpsals led by Stephen Merkwitz, als f NASA’s Gddard Space Flight Centre, and Duglas Currie, f the University f Maryland are t sprinkle sme mre sphisticated versins ver mre f the mn’s Surface.
Such effrts may attract little attentin cmpared with the launch f the space shuttle Endeavur this week. Nevertheless, when NASA argues that putting peple int space inspires yung peple t study science, it is precisely these Endeavurs that it wishes t encurage.
    1. By “Launching peple int space may make the headlines but it is little useful fr science.” (In Paragraph 1), the authr means______.
    A. launching peple int space is very imprtant.

    C. humans’ travel t uter space is against scientific rules.
    D. launching peple int space is nt f great scientific value.
    2. The mst distinctive feature f a lunar-based radi telescpe mentined in the secnd paragraph is that______.
    A. it is able t capture lng wavelengths.
    B. it pssesses better functins than the telescpes n earth.
    C. it can escape frm the magnetic field f the earth.

    A. The radi telescpe will be able t find extraterrestrial life.
    B. The secnd prject fcuses n the interactin between slar wind and Earth’s atmsphere.
    C. Jseph Lazi’s prpsal is part f the radi telescpe prject.

as sn as就……,引导时间状语从句。
put up with忍受。
