We humans are a curius species. as NASA says n its website, Humans are driven t explre the unknwn, discver new wrlds, push the bundaries f ur scientific and technical limits, and then push further.
And space explratin is where we’ve been “pushing” ur furthest curisity.
2019 began with tw pieces f exciting space explratin news. On Jan. 3. China landed a spacecraft, Chang’e 4, n the mns far side-the side we can’t see frm earth--fr the first time in human histry. and accrding t a reprt published n Jan. 9 in Nature. scientists frm the Canadian Hydrgen Intensity Mapping Experiment (CHIME) detected repeated radi signals frm a galaxy 1. 5 billin light years away, pssibly sent by intelligent aliens.
Hwever, what’s even mre exciting than the news is the fact that whenever speaking f space explratin, we frget ur plitical and cultural differences-the things that s bsess us.
“When yu g int space, yu becme part f this verall cllective called ‘humanity’,” Ken Liu a Chinese-American sci-fi writer and translatr tld a website. “Yu’re n lnger Chinese. American Russian… Yur culture is left behind. Yu’re nw just ‘humanity’ with a capital ‘H’. ”
This magic has wrked all the way alng ur jurney int space. When the Us astrnaut Neil Armstrng (1930--2012) became the first human t set ft n the mn in 1969, fr example, he tld the wrld: That’s ne small step fr man, ne giant leap fr mankind. Nw, with Chang’e 4 tuching dwn n new mn territry China’s aim is t help scientists frm arund the wrld find ut mre abut Earth’s nly satellite. And with the discvery f the CHIME astrnmers, were ne step clser t answering a cmmn questin in science: “Are humans alne in the universe?” It’s true that we are a curius species. But instead f being curius abut the “unknwn”, perhaps we’re really mre eager t “push further” ur wn human" “bundaries” and “limits”.

When thinking abut placing a human being in space. ne f the mst imprtant questins is hw t design special clthing needed t prtect the persn frm the dangers f the space envirnment. 1 The fierce heat f the sun can cause severe burns. The lack f the atmsphere can cause gases in the bdy t expand and even burst. With n xygen t breathe,a human being will die in nly a few mments. 2 S is damage frm small pieces f rcks and bjects like meterids(流星体). In1933,an American flyer,Wiley Pst,designed ne f the first successful devices t prtect a pilt at extreme heights. 3 Astrnauts in the American space agency flew the first American space flights in the early 1960s. The clthing was similar t that invented by Wiley Pst.
4 It lets them mve d useful tasks and stay utside their spacecraft in cmfrt and safety fr several hurs. The spacesuit is called the shuttle extravehicular mbility unit r EMU. It was designed t endure lnger and t permit mre mvement than earlier spacesuits. The EMU has a number f parts that an astrnaut can link tgether by using nly ne hand which makes it pssible fr each astrnaut t select the parts that fit crrectly. Nwadays, NASA scientists are als cnsidering the kind f spacesuit that wuld be needed fr explratin n the planet Mars. 5 The equipment may als have t prtect astrnauts frm particles carried in the wind n mars And, they must be easy t repair and keep clean during a lnger fli ght t and frm the red planet.
A. Radiatin frm the sun is anther risk in space.
B. The cld f space will freeze skin in a shrt time.
C. Tday, astrnauts wear very different prtective clthing.
D. Special spacesuits have been used fr explratin f Mars.
E. EMU has many parts that can be linked tgether by using tw hands.
F. It was a large device that lked like a can surrunded the pilts head.
G. Because f the gravity n Mars, spacesuits may have t be designed t be lighter than suits used in rbit r n the mn.
