The Gettysburg Address, President Abraham Lincoln's most famous speech made in 1863, lasted only two minutes. However, Lincoln's words made an abiding impression. Filmmaker Ken Burns has made a film about the experience of memorizing the Gettysburg Address. The Address follows 50 boys from Greenwood School in Putney, Vermont. The boys are between the ages of 11 and 17.Even though they struggle with learning difficulties, they are all memorizing the Gettysburg Address. For you or me, this might be a simple task, but for these boys it's difficult.
“Our film is an inspiring story of these kids struggling to understand the Gettysburg Address and the trials, difficulties and joy they experienced along the way,” says Burns.
For more than 30 years, reciting(背诵) the entire Gettysburg Address has been a tradition at the Greenwood School. It can take years to memorize for some students. Near the end of the school year, if the boys wish, they may recite the speech to the students and their parents.
Many of the boys in the film were bullied(欺负) in public schools because of their learning difficulties. At the Greenwood School the boys learn they can be themselves and that they aren't alone in the world. “Words are medicine,” says Burns. “Lincoln in his speech talks about a new birth of freedom. What the Address memorization does for these boys is giving them new freedom. It's amazing that more than 150 years later these words can still have that kind of power.”
Viewers can also see scenes of the boys doing everyday activities, such as playing football and playing music. The boys work, play, and struggle to overcome difficulties just as we all do.
The best part? Reciting Lincoln's words comes to stand for hope and success for these boys. “The Gettysburg Address will have a big influence on the kids' lives,” says Burns. “It will be something they carry with great pride for the rest of their lives.”
4. What does the underlined word “abiding” in the first paragraph mean?
A. Firing. B. General. C. Lasting. D. Immediate.
5. Why does the Greenwood School ask the boys to recite the Gettysburg Address?
A. It is easy to understand. B. It only lasts two minutes.
C. The boys like Lincoln very much. D. The words in it are quite inspiring.
6. What does the film aim to show?
A. The school's great achievement. B. The boys' love for their school.
C. The sense of loving one's country. D. The spirit of overcoming difficulties.
7. Why does the film have scenes of the boys doing everyday activities?
A. To show the boys' progress. B. To encourage people to learn from them.
C. To show the speech's influence. D. To tell us the boys' learning difficulties.
