Wildlife photographer Sam Turley and his wife Vera found a two-week-old blesbok (南非白面大羚羊)—whom they named Meme—on her own. She was spotted wandering around on her own after her mother passed away.
The pair took Meme in and raised the animal themselves for seven months before releasing her back out into the wild. Neither of them had ever raised a blesbok before. So it required a huge amount of patience and compassion to keep her fit and healthy but it deserved the effort. Meme would follow Vera wherever she went and sometimes the couple would have a blesbok, a dog and a cat all walking together. In the right areas, the blesbok is a really common antelope to see and is therefore often overlooked and under-appreciated. It was a privilege to be let into the blesbok’s secret world and they learned more about the blesbok than they thought was ever possible.
After releasing Meme back out into the wild, the couple were convinced they would never see her again, until several months later when they were driving around a reserve and happened to come across a herd of blesboks.
Vera called out Meme’s name in the hope of finding Meme. Blesboks all look very similar to one another, which makes it very difficult to distinguish individuals. When Vera started to talk, the herd raised their heads and looked over. Vera continued to call Meme and as all the other blesboks lost interest, one individual held her gaze and ran straight up to her.
After rescuing the lonely animal, Sam and Vera found it extremely emotional to have to release her back out into the wild to fend for herself—even though they knew it was the right thing to do. But after having such a strong bond with an animal, it was really difficult to see her go. They had put so much time, effort and energy into raising her but to see her walking in a herd of blesboks made it all worthwhile.
24. What happened to Meme when she was spotted?
A. She became an orphan. B. She was lost in the forest.
C. She was hunted by a couple. D. She was abandoned by her mother.
25. What was Meme’s life with the couple like?
A. She was rare to be seen outside.
B. She was hard to be artificially fed.
C. She fitted in well with the whole family.
D. She was under-appreciated in the family.
26. Which word can best explain the underlined word “fend” in the last paragraph?
A. Look. B. Care.
C. Search. D. Hunt.
27. Which of the following can best describe the act of rescuing the blesbok?
A. Effortless. B. Unsatisfactory.
C. Rewarding. D. Heartbreaking.

A fourth color might be added to traffic lights to better realize the potential of self-driving vehicles, as stated in a recent paper by researchers at North Carolina State University in the US.
Autonomous vehicles can do more than just drive-they are able to sense their surroundings and upload information. A shared network gives orders to stop at a crossing based on traffic conditions.
The added white lights would be used to signal to human drivers that autonomous vehicles are managing the upcoming traffic flow intelligently. Drivers don’t have to check the traditional lights if the white one is on. “The white lights will tell human drivers to simply follow the car in front of them,” one of the study authors Ali Hajbabaie told the university’s website.
Simulated (模拟的) models showed that autonomous vehicles were able to improve traffic flow on their own. Introducing the white light also has a positive effect on reducing fuel consumption. The higher the percentage of autonomous vehicles at a crossing, the faster the traffic moves, reducing about 40 to 99 percent of the total delay time.
What kind of infrastructure (基础设施) is needed as self-driving technology thrives? In an interview with China Surveying and Mapping magazine, Liu Jingnan at the Chinese Academy of Engineering shared his answers.
To begin with, the vehicle’s network that collects data about the environment and shares the data with other vehicles needs to be intelligent. High-precision maps are needed for autonomous vehicles to plan routes in detail. They can provide both updated information on traditional maps and real-time changes, such as accidents.
For example, when driving around a curve, the navigation (导航) system in the vehicle needs to calculate the safe speed based on the map’s information. And if the area is foggy, the network has to alarm the other cars to slow down.
Other elements on the road need to be upgraded too. For example, road markings should be precise and readable for machines. Sensors should be built on sidewalks and roads to allow vehicles to predict potentially dangerous situations.
28. What is the purpose of adding a white light to traffic lights?
A. To signal to self-driving cars when to stop.
B. To help driverless cars assess traffic conditions.
C. To tell human drivers to go after the cars in front.
D. To signal to human drivers to pass the cars ahead.
29. According to the article, what effect would the introduction of self-driving cars bring about?
A. Increased road safety.
B. Reduced fuel efficiency.
C. Less time stuck in traffic.
D. Unpredictable traffic patterns.
30. What is a function of high-precision maps in self-driving technology?
A. To calculate a safe speed for vehicles.
B. To provide real-time weather updates.
C. To plan routes for autonomous vehicles.
D. To offer real-time data on road conditions.
31. What does the author intend to prove in the second-to-last paragraph?
A. The advantages of autonomous vehicles.
B. The role of the navigation system in self-driving cars.
C. The application of the infrastructure in self-driving cars.
D. The efficiency of self-driving cars handling emergencies.
D
Scientists in Switzerland have used lasers (激光) to change the path of a lightning strike. The experiment was carried out on Santis mountain in Switzerland, near a radio and TV tower hit by lightning about 100 times a year. Using a special laser, the researchers were able to guide the lightning strike.
Scientists have been trying to find a way to protect buildings from lightning for a long time. At present, the best way to protect buildings from lightning is by putting metal rods (杆) on the buildings. These rods are connected to the ground. The lightning is attracted to the rods, which safely guide the electricity into the ground. But lightning rods can only protect a small area. If a building is very large, it needs a lot of lightning rods. But some buildings-such as airports-are so large that it’s difficult to protect the whole building using lightning rods.
Another idea is to use lasers to guide lightning. The idea of using lasers to guide lightning isn’1new. Scientists have been working on the idea for over 20 years. They’ve successfully guided lightning with lasers inside a laboratory. But until 2021, scientists guided lightning with lasers outside. Using a powerful laser that can fire about 1, 000 times a second, scientists in Switzerland were able to guide lightning bolts for 164 feet (50 meters).
The heat from the laser creates a path of air that is less thick than the air around it. The path also has a special charge. The lightning can follow this path almost as if it were a lightning rod. In the past, experiments with lasers that fired more slowly didn’t work.
Managing to guide the lightning in an outdoor environment is a very big step. But despite the progress, the laser still isn’t a good choice when it comes to protecting large buildings.
32. To stop a building from being stricken by lightning, it is best to__________.
A. equip it with metal rods B. position it away from airports
C. build it on low-lying open ground D. keep it away from any kind of metal
33. What enables the laser to guide the lightning?
A. Its color. B. Its brightness. C. Its speed. D. Its concentration.
34. What will the paragraph following the text probably talk about?
A. How the laser should be improved to protect large buildings.
B. When the laser will be widely used to protect large buildings.
C. Why it is unnecessary to use the laser to protect large buildings.
D. What prevents the laser from being used to protect large buildings.
35. What is the best title for the text?
A. Scientists Find a New Use of the Laser
B. Scientists Guide Lightning with the Laser
C. A New Idea Has Been Tested to Guide Lightning
D. A New Way to Protect Buildings Has Been Found

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Virtually, there is nothing that man cannot do. Only what he has to do is keep doing and doing without being discouraged. Success will come someday or other, though it may apparently be the conception about something that it cannot be done. 36 But the reality is that man’s success depends on whether he can do the toughest tasks successfully. It is because our life is complicated and tough. And to succeed in this tough battle, perseverance and hard work are a must 37 . We can prove this fact when we look at the reality of life and the history of man’s success. Perseverance helps us do what we otherwise would consider impossible to do.
What the world-famous scientist Sir Isaac Newton had done by twelve years’ constant hard work was burnt out by his pet dog. But that could not discourage him a little. 38 It is only for his undefeated perseverance that’ we have been able to have many inventions and discoveries.
39 He went through thick and thin to reach his destination after months of the strenuous voyage on the sea. He discovered the way from Spain to America and offered the world a new route of communication with America. This outcome of his perseverance will be generated by the world forever.
All the great men in history have written their names in golden letters by means of perseverance. 40 If we all are perseverant in whatever we do, we are sure to stand out as a successful nation in the near future.
A. Every action has its reaction.
B. It is a unique precondition to success in life.
C. In human life, perseverance plays a very important role.
D. Their success will always remain as perfect examples to us.
E. Columbus has left us an adventurous story of perseverance.
F. The task that is easily done at the first attempt is undoubtedly very easy.
G. He was able to do it again through years of hard work and perseverance.

My Own Beat
My pulse quickened as my feet took me closer and closer to the door. In my head, I could hear the words my kids kept telling me, “Do it, Mom. You never do anything for yourself. Just follow your dream.” I felt my lungs filled with air and released it.
“What are you doing here? You’re a single mom of five. You’re fifty years old!” My thoughts were fighting with my kids’ words. Even so, it was as if I had no control over my feet. As if they were being urged along from somewhere deep inside me.
Finally I gathered my courage, stepped into the hall and signed up for drum classes, which was my childhood dream.
Wednesday came, and along with it my first drum lesson. I walked through the door and headed directly to the seating area in the back. My hands kept fidgeting (动来动去) with the sticks. I kept nervously looking at the time. I tried to slow down my breath. I knew the teacher would say I was not the right type of person to play the drums. I turned around to see an older man looking at me.
“Stephanie? I’m Mike, the drum teacher,” he said.
People make me nervous. That’s the way I’ve always been. But Mike had a very calm manner about him, so I relaxed just slightly. Not only did he not tell me that I was the wrong type of person to play the drums, but he complimented me on how well I held the sticks and followed along with him.
“You are fine. I see so much potential in you,” he told me.
Soon my thirty-minute lesson is over. Walking back to my car, I felt full of excitement and energy. I thought of how many times I had driven my kids to their competitions and watched proudly as they bravely went in front of judges and audiences.
Now it felt scary and amazing at the same time to follow my dream and do something that was purely for my enjoyment, something just for me. Maybe one day I would have the chance to stand on the stage.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I started the car and couldn’t wait to go back home to tell my kids about my class.
