When asked about her childhood in the documentary AliveInside, a 90-year-old woman with dementia replies, “I’ve forgotten so much.” Film-maker Michael Rossato-Bennett then plays music from her past for her. “That’s Louis Armstrong,” she says. “He’s singing When the Saints Go Marching In and it takes me back to my school days.”  She then recalls exact details from her life.

Why does it happen? Music tends to accompany events that arouse emotions or otherwise make strong impressions on us—such as weddings and graduations. These kinds of experiences form strong memories, and the music and memories likely become intertwined(紧密相连) in our neural(神经的) networks, according to Julene Johnson, a professor at the University of California. Movements, such as dancing, also often pair with our experience of music, which can help form memories. Even many years later, hearing the music can bring back memories of these long-past events.

As AliveInside shows, music has this power even for many people with dementia. Researchers note that the brain areas that process and remember music are typically less damaged by dementia than other areas, and they think it may explain the phenomenon.

They also pay attention to elderly people with dementia, especially those in nursing homes. “It’s possible those long-term memories are still there,” Johnson says, “but people just have a harder time accessing them because they’re in a strange place and there’re not a lot of circumstances in which someone could pull out those memories.”

Johnson also notes that music is not universally useful for all people with dementia since there are some people with dementia whose brain area that recognizes music is damaged.

Despite music’s apparent benefits, few studies have explored its influence on memory recall in people with dementia. “It’s really an untapped area,” Johnson says. Petr Janata is a researcher investigating the topic of music and memory. He says that scientists still do not have the answers to why and how music reawakens memories in people with dementia, but this phenomenon is real and it’s just a matter of time before it’s fully borne out by scientific research.

    24. What helps the old woman in AliveInside recall her childhood?

    A. The description of her school days

    B. A film she watched before.

    C. A song she listened to before.

    D. The voice of her childhood friend.

    25. What benefit of music is discussed in paragraph 2?

    A. It helps make lasting memories.

    B. It helps cure patients of dementia.

    C. It helps arouse emotions in special events.

    D. It helps remember dance movements easily.

    26. According to Johnson, what should we do for elderly people with dementia?

    A. Send them to nursing homes for good care.

    B. Provide familiar environments for them.

    C. Play lots of classical music to them.

    D. Talk to them about their past.

    27. What do we know about the study into music and memory recall in people with dementia?

    A. It is criticized by Petr Janata.

    B. It is a ground-breaking study.

    C. It is supported by solid evidence.

    D. It applies to all people with dementia.

    C

Of the seven stadiums Qatar built for the World Cup, one will be fully taken apart after the event and could be shipped to countries that need it. That’s what the host has said about Stadium 974, a seaside structure with more than 40, 000 seats partially built from steel and recycled shipping containers.

Stadium 974, named after the number of containers used to build it, is the only stadium that Qatar has constructed for the World Cup that isn’t air conditioned. It hosts only evening matches when temperatures are cooler.

“The idea is to avoid building ‘a white elephant’, a stadium that is left unused after the competition ends,” says Fenwick Iribarren Architects, which designed Stadium 974 and two other World Cup stadiums.

Qatar has said the stadium could be repurposed to build a stadium of the same size elsewhere, but it has not detailed where the stadium will go after the tournament or even when it will be taken down.

“Where its components go matters because whether Stadium 974 has a lower CO2 footprint than a permanent one comes down to how many times it is rebuilt, and how far it is transported,” says Karim Elgendy, who previously worked as a climate consultant for the World Cup.

Elgendy estimates that if the stadium is reused only once, its emissions (排放) will be lower than a permanent one as long as it is shipped fewer than 7,000 kilometers away. If it’s repurposed more than once, it can be shipped farther and still be less polluting than a permanent stadium.

“The energy required for taking it apart and shipping the building components will obviously need to be estimated,” Elgendy says. “But it is unlikely to outweigh the emissions produced in the construction of a new stadium.”

    28. What can we know about Stadium 974?

    A. It can be fully taken apart and rebuilt.

    B. It hosts all the evening competitions.

    C. It is completely built from recycled steel.

    D. It just needs to be air conditioned in the day.

    29. Which of the following best explains “a white elephant” underlined in paragraph 3?

    A. An extremely huge building.

    B. A very expensive but useless thing.

    C. A creatively repurposed shipping container.

    D. An ugly but environmentally friendly stadium,

    30. How far can Stadium 974 be shipped if it is just reused once according to Elgendy?

    A. More than 7,500 kilometers. B. Fewer than 6,000 kilometers.

    C. Within 7,000 kilometers. D. Around 14,000 kilometers.

    31. In which section of a newspaper will this text most probably appear?

    A. Culture. B. Economy. C. Politics. D. Environment.

    D

New technological tools are enabling a global community of biologists and amateur scientists to explore the natural world of sound in richer detail and at greater range than ever before. Just as microscopes helped humans observe things not visible to the naked eye, widely used microphones and machine learning models allow us to listen to sounds we cannot otherwise hear.

Billions of dollars are pouring into so-called generative artificial intelligence, such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, with scores of new companies being launched to commercialize these foundation models. But in one sense, these models are mostly used to rearrange existing human knowledge in new combinations rather than to generate anything really new. What may have a bigger scientific impact is “additive AI”, using machine learning to explore specific, newly created data sets and extend the frontiers of human knowledge. When it comes to sonic (声音的) data, there is an incredible potential for cross-species communication through the use of machines that can translate and copy animal sounds exactly, effectively creating a “Google Translate for the zoo”.

This sonic revolution has been promoted by advances in both hardware and software. Cheap, durable, long-lasting microphones and sensors can be attached to trees in the Amazon, rocks in the Arctic or to dolphins’ backs, enabling real-time monitoring. That stream of sonic data is then processed by “additive AI”. However, this data only makes sense when combined with human observations about natural behaviors gained from painstaking fieldwork by biologists or crowdsourced analysis from amateurs.

Scientists have discovered fascinating information about the sonic universe, which has already led to practical and commercial outcomes. For example, cryptographers (密码专家) have been studying the buzzes, clicks, creaks and squeaks of whales to understand whether their “bionic Morse code” could be copied to encrypt (加密) communications. However, this is just the beginning of our exploration of sound, and there is no telling what other discoveries await us.

    32. Why does the author mention microscopes in paragraph 1?

    A. To highlight the popularity of microscopes.

    B. To illustrate the role of sound exploration tools.

    C. To show the development of scientific instruments.

    D. To stress the importance of observing beyond senses.

    33. How may “additive AI” assist in sound exploration?

    A. It may make sense of natural behaviors independently.

    B. It may guarantee the real-time monitoring of sonic data.

    C. It may help create translation equipment for animal sounds.

    D. It may help spread the existing human knowledge of sound.

    34. What’s the author’s attitude towards sound exploration?

    A. Optimistic. B. Reserved. C. Critical. D. Indifferent

    35. What can be the best title for the passage?

    A. Sonic Revolution: Discovering New Sounds

    B. Sonic Translation: Inter-species Communication

    C. Additive AI: Extending the Frontiers of Knowledge

    D. Sonic Exploration with AI: Listening to the Unheard

When suffering from social anxiety, you will be frightened to deal with some situations. Wherever your fear arises, you are likely to experience sweating, flushing, feeling your heart race, or other symptoms of anxiety.    36

    Relaxing your muscles.

37     For deep muscle relaxation, you will tighten and then relax the major muscle groups of your body, starting with your feet and stretching your way towards your head and face.

        38

Controlling your breathing is another good way to deal with your emotions. When you’re anxious, your breathing becomes faster and not as deep. Consequently, you’ll feel dizzy, which brings on more anxiety. Learning to breathe slower and more regularly through your nose will help you calm down.

    Adopting visualization.

The key to visualization is to remember a place that made you feel safe and comfortable. Create a vivid picture of that place in your mind so that you can feel, see; smell and even taste it.    39     Keep trying and you will benefit from it eventually.

    Facing your anxiety.

Most people with social anxiety want to hide, avoid, or run away from whatever they’re scared of.    40    When using this method, focus on what’s going on around you instead of what’s going through your mind. That should help you distract yourself from those anxious thoughts.

    A. Breathing via your nose.

    B. Taking your breath slowly.

    C. It takes time and patience to practice this technique, however.

    D. This technique will help you better handle the situation of being desperate.

    E. Luckily, there exist ways to tackle social anxiety, whatever your symptoms.

    F. As is recognized, learning to physically relax is a good approach to manage anxiety.

    G. But if you face anxiety bravely, you’ll be aware that it is simply something you can live with after a few exposures.

    第二节(满分25分)

    阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Public places have been difficult for my family since Myles was diagnosed with autism(自闭症) at two. He had quickly turned into a silent child frozen in a world completely inaccessible to us. One time, I got up the courage to take Myles out to Golden Corral without my husband. Lots of people and noise caused overload for him. First came the screaming, and then more noises. With my nerves stretched thin, I noticed a sweet old lady coming my way.

“Can you keep him quiet?” she snapped. “I’m trying to eat!”

I held my tongue out of respect for my elders. I apologized and left with as much dignity as I could. I had to escape the weight of the eyes around. After that, I built a wall around my heart to protect my heart from other people’s opinions about my family. I still had the great privilege of raising this very special child. It didn’t matter what anyone thought, but I had lost something. I stopped looking for the opportunity to help them understand. I assumed the worst about them.

So when I was back at Golden Corral with my son, who started shouting and hitting the table again, I looked up at the middle-aged woman approaching. Her face was calm as she assessed the situation. If she complained about my son’s behavior, I was prepared to fight back.

“I hope you don’t mind me asking,” she said. “But does your son have autism?”

“Yeah,” I replied to the lady, who was waiting patiently.

“Well, I raised a child with autism. My name is Pam,” she said. “If you ever need any help, please call me. I have connection with a lot of people like you and me.” I looked at the hands she extended, holding a slip of paper with her name and number on it.

“Thank you,” I managed to whisper.

“Call me,” she said, smiling at me, and saving a special, knowing smile for Myles before walking away.

    注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;

    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Later I called her, and she became as close as family.
