Growing up, I always heard people say work hard pays. I never really understood these words until I reached the age where my parents stopped giving me my monthly allowance and asked me to look for a job.
New Year is a season of good news for merrymakers and entrepreneurial (企业家的) characters. My childhood friend was one of the latter. Mike and I were two sides of the same coin. I was an introvert and a bookworm, while Mike was outgoing and a merrymaker. His added advantage over me was that he came from a family of entrepreneurs. Therefore, while I saw the festive season as another time to enjoy, he saw it as a perfect time to make money. Ironically, I needed this side of him, given my present predicament (困境).
Mike was not of the “work hard pays” school of thought but the “work smart” school. When I told him about my predicament, he saw a business partner. He confided ( 吐露 ) in me about his business idea — making and selling festive decorations. Having noticed my disbelieving look, he told me he had researched and realized that only one shop sold festive decorations with exorbitant ( 过高的 ) price, which meant that there was room for competition. However, I reminded him starting a business, let alone competing with an established enterprise, required capital. He told me, “Not really. All we had to do was make some decorations ourselves.” Upon that, we made some special designs and hit the ground running.
News about our selling decorations spread like wildfire. Mike’s decision to publish brochures advertising our products was a genius marketing trick. Within three days, we had sold about 50 sets of decorations, and as they say, the rest is history.
My parents’ decision to stop my monthly allowance served to teach me the value of work. However, it was my entrepreneurial adventure with Mike that taught me that working smart is better than working hard.
24. What was the author’s present predicament?
A. Weak reading skills. B. Lack of financial support.
C. Poor communication ability. D. Awful relationship with parents.
25. What do the underlined words “hit the ground running” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Set off immediately. B. Collected money eagerly.
C. Imagined the future merrily. D. Started the business successfully.
26. What is Mike’s marketing strategy?
A. Advertising their products widely. B. Doing research in advance.
C. Designing delicate decorations. D. Making decorations on their own.
27. What can we learn from the author’s story?
A. Smart work outweighs hard work. B. Wisdom comes from hard work.
C. Working hard pays off. D. Working smart starts with working hard.

Beavers(海狸), like humans, change their surroundings to fit their needs. Known as nature’s engineers, they tear trees down to build homes to live in and dams to raise water levels for protection from enemies. Dams also slow water’s flow while blocking sediment(沉积物)that would otherwise flow downstream. The resulting wetlands often attract wildlife diversity where none had existed. There are challenges, though. Beaver dams sometimes cause flooding, and most people prefer trees alive and upright.
Communities face a delicate balancing act, learning to coexist with beavers. Last winter, many people enjoying Winston Path became beaver fans as one furry family transformed Swallow Pond into an oasis for birds, frogs, turtles and deer.
Yet such activity caused concern. As beavers worked, they raised water levels about five feet. The increased depth allows beavers to survive underwater if the pond ices over. But county officials were concerned about how higher water would affect the soil bank supporting Winston Path.
To find a good balance between protecting the path and the beavers, the county introduced a“ beaver baffle”— a pond leveler.Beavers often rush to fill holes in their dams. Baffles stabilize water levels by creating a hidden exit for high water to escape through the dam, unnoticed by the beavers.
People love the beavers but they also love the mature trees. Recently, Catherine Jones,18, organized a tree-caging event — putting wire cloth around large tree trunks to discourage beavers from biting them. It also protects people from injury due to random trees falling.“We cover the trees we don’t want them to eat, while planting periodically others they like, “said Jones.“We need-to learn to give up a little of our wants to share the Earth’s resources.”
Swallow Pond’s 2023 project will restore proper water depth and improve wildlife habitat without creating problems for the path. The balancing act continues.
28. What is the first paragraph mainly about?
A. Where beavers’ favorite surroundings are.
B. What effects beavers have on their habitat.
C. Why beavers are called nature’s engineers.
D. How beavers help attract wildlife diversity.
29. Why did the beaver family’s activity cause concern?
A. Swallow Pond would flood often.
B. Sediment would flow downstream.
C. The popular path might be damaged.
D. Beavers might have to live underwater.
20. What do the underlined words “beaver baffle” refer to in paragraph 4?
A. A block to keep beavers away. B. A tool to fix holes in the dams.
C. A device to maintain water level. D. A material to protect the soil bank.
31. What is the theme of Swallow Pond’s 2023 project?
A. Biological diversity. B. Harmonious coexistence.
C. Prevention of natural disasters. D. Preservation of wildlife habitat.

These days, teens are heavily influenced by the media. Many of them have watched thousands of hours of TV. That’s 5-more time than they spend with teachers at school. And we haven’t yet considered the hours they spend using the internet and reading newspapers.
However, several studies have shown a serious problem: Today’s teens lack media literacy. In other words, they have difficulty critically thinking about the information they see. One study focused on middle school students. It found more than 80 percent of them couldn’t tell the difference between real news stories and ads that looked like news.
Stanford University professor Kevin John teaches a class called Media Effects. He tries to help his students learn media literacy. The Professor gave an example that shows why media literacy matters. In the example, two news stations report a snowstorm. One focuses on the terrible road conditions. The other focuses on kids playing in the snow. “With a news’ story, news stations tell you what they feel are the important details. These details largely depend on the opinions of the news director,” said John, “A person who has media literacy would realize that each story is about one aspect at one point in time. There is more going on.”
Some experts think School is the best place to teach media literacy. Others believe everyone from parents to journalists should help teens learn the skill.
As for the best time to start learning media literacy, many experts recommend the age of 12. But some basic ideas can be taught even earlier. “It’s never too early to start learning media literacy.” said John.
32. What can we know about teens today from paragraph 1?
A. They are willing to read newspaper at home.
B. They prefer watching TV to surfing the internet.
C. They spend more time watching TV than studying.
D. They are fond of surfing the internet better at school.
33. What is the main idea of paragraph 2?
A. Most of teens have trouble with reading.
B. Most of teens needs to practise thinking.
C. Most of teens are short of media literacy.
D. Most of teens lay stress on media effects.
34. What does the example given by professor imply?
A. There are many sides to a thing at one time.
B. Terrible road conditions cause inconvenience.
C. One’s media literacy depends on your attitude.
D. News details must be announced by news stations.
35. Which of the following statements does John agree with?
A. Parents have the responsibility to realize media literacy.
B. Teens should learn media literacy as early as possible.
C. The best age for children to learn is the age of 12.
D. Children can be taught better only at school.

Outside the Box
The Harvestfest contest was falling on Friday and everyone in school was talking about it. All the students would show up in their self-made costumes and a winner would be chosen by the principal.
“Do you have your costume for the Harvestfest contest?” Alice asked. “I’m going as a chocolate bar. My mom and I have been working on it all week.”
“Yeah, I have a costume,” said Jordan Eastman, popping up the two front wheels of his wheelchair as he waited for his dad to pick him up. “But it’s boring.”
“Why? What is it?” Alice asked.
“MaxMag the superhero, but Danny, Tom and Izzy are all going as MaxMag too.” Jordan shook his head. “That’s too many to stand a chance at winning the contest.” He waved to his dad, who had just pulled up in front of the school.
Jordan rolled his wheelchair toward his dad, and Alice walked with him to the minivan.
“Maybe you should go as something else.”
“The contest is Friday night.” Jordan sighed. “It’s too late to change costumes.”
“Jordan, you have to think outside the box. Look around your house and see what you have. There’s hidden potential in everyday items.” She took a sip of her drink, and told Jordan that her chocolate-bar costume was made from old fabric her mom had lying around and recycled plastics.
On his way home, Jordan was quiet. He kept thinking about Alice’s words: Think outside the box. There’s hidden potential in everyday items. When he got home, he found his mum handling with some wooden pieces. She was putting a new desk together. On top of the desk was the huge empty cardboard box the pieces had come in. Mom smiled at Jordan, pointing at the desk, “What do you think?”
