Michael Laffoon has a vivid memory of the day he decided to piece his life back together. “I literally woke up in my van(小货车)and I thought . I can’t do this anymore because I’m going to die,’” he says. “It was just a strong feeling that I had come to the end of a chapter. ”

For eight years, the Santa Cruz, California resident drifted in and out of homelessness because of a serious drug addiction. It was a frustrating, impossible lifestyle. In 2009, Laffoon learned about Homeless Garden Project at a kitchen where he was volunteering. The not-for-profit aims to lift people living on the streets of Santa Cruz out of homelessness through farming. The end goal is that they will leave the farm with stable housing and a full-time job.

After a year and a half of being in the program, Laffoon was able to secure employment and stable housing. He later obtained a degree in horticulture(园艺学). “It was the first step back into normal society-the first open door,” he says.

Trainees are employed to grow fruit, vegetables, flowers and herbs on the farm. They get paid a wage, are given basic job skills training and are matched with a social worker to work through specific goals. The project has helped close to 1,000 people. Over the past five years, 96 percent of graduates have obtained jobs or stable income and 86 percent have found housing.

The project’s staffers say that the project has always had a strong element of community, which is central to the healing process of its trainees, as they often feel like they’ve lost their sense of belonging. Laffoon says that while he was homeless, he spent a lot of his time “trying to be invisible” and felt secluded from the rest of society. The project gave him meaningful work and a sense of belonging, which helped him get back on his feet.

Ella Fleming, the project’s farm manager, has seen how growing food can have a life-changing and inspirational impact on trainees. “We provide a place where it’s safe, it’s nurturing, it’s healthy and there’s an exchange that happens,” she says. “When you’re caring for a plant to try to get it to grow, you’re also giving yourself some self-care to know that you can grow,” she says.

    24. What kind of person is Laffoon described as in the text?

    A. A person who fights his drug addiction.

    B. A person who has experienced homelessness.

    C. A person who gets stable housing and a full-time job.

    D. A person who benefits from Homeless Garden Project.

    25. What is the purpose of Homeless Garden Project for homeless people?

    A. To employ them to work on the farm.

    B. To provide them with housing and work.

    C. To enable them to make a living in society.

    D. To give them opportunities for volunteering.

    26. What does the underlined word “secluded” in paragraph 5 indicate?

    A. Laffoon felt alone in the world. B. Laffoon felt sorry for himself.

    C. Laffoon felt different from others. D. Laffoon felt unsatisfied with society.

    27. Which of the following can best describe Homeless Garden Project?

    A. It’s flexible. B. It’s enjoyable.

    C. It’s inspiring. D. It’s comforting.

    C

More than one-third of the world’s food is wasted or thrown away. This adds up to an unbelievable 1.3 billion tons of waste a year, most of which rots in landfills, emitting (排放) methane and contributing to climate change.

But one of the most promising and simple solutions lies in the problem itself: this wasted food — if composted ( 堆肥 ) — could slow climate change and improve soil quality. When food waste break down in composting facilities or even in backyard compost piles, they don’t produce methane, and they result in carbon-rich soil. Higher quality soil also continues to absorb more carbon from the atmosphere, helping to fertilize plants and contributing further to fighting against climate change. Increasing the amount of carbon in the world’s soil by just 0.4 percent a year would stop the rise of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Returning one ton of organic matter to each hectare of soil would increase production of cereal crops each year by millions of tons.

While it is true that people can compost in their yards, community gardens, schools or even on their kitchen counters, larger-scale efforts, including infrastructure ( 基础设施 ) and reward system for consumers, would take it to the next level. Imagine that consumers could just leave food leftovers in a bin for pickup, or drop them off at a local store, earning a few cents a bucket, just like what has been offered for recycling bottles or newspapers. Moreover, in the case of composting, the reward system would be sustainable because the end-product of compost can be sold to farmers.

There have been important steps recently toward keeping food waste out of landfills. But food still makes up the largest part of city landfills. Until that changes through increased composting, we are wasting a lot more than food. We are wasting the opportunity to slow climate change and ensure adequate future food supply for the world.

    28. What is the consequence of food waste?

    A. Food shortage. B. Climate change.

    C. Less farming land. D. Worse soil quality.

    29. What can we learn about the carbon-rich soil?

    A. It emits large amounts of carbon. B. It stimulates the production of carbon-dioxide.

    C. It increases by 0.4 percent every year. D. It benefits both plants and the environment.

    30. Which of the following does the author agree with?

    A. Taking steps to ban landfills is urgent.

    B. Composting on a large scale is helpful.

    C. The end-product of compost is affordable.

    D. It is just a matter of time before food waste stops.

    31. What is the best title for the text?

    A. Where Landfills Go B. Why Farmers Compost Food Waste

    C. What Modern Farming Brings Us D. How Wasted Food Could Save the Planet

    D

Seagrass meadows(海草床) are wonder plants growing beneath the sea. They feed and shelter sea life and are masterful at storing carbon. Thanks to the assistance of tiger sharks, a huge seagrass meadow in the Bahamas Banks was recently discovered, offering the world a tool to fight climate change.

Seagrass has usually been detected by Earth-orbiting satellites that identify darker patches in the blue water. In this study, tiger sharks were selected as research tools due to their highly consistent associations with seagrass ecosystems. They spend 70% of their time in seagrass meadows. The team equipped eight tiger sharks with satellite tags (电子跟踪器), seven sharks with camera tags, and used a 360-degree camera on a shark for the first time ever.

The data researchers collected was astonishing. The world’s largest seagrass ecosystem, measuring at least 66,900 square kilometers, has been discovered. This reflects a 41% increase from previous estimates of global seagrass. Seagrass can capture (捕获) huge quantities of carbon by photosynthesis (光合作用) and stores it on the seafloor. In terms of climate change, this is excellent news; seagrass is 35 times faster a removing carbon than tropical rainforests. When referred to global seagrass carbon stock estimates, the study indicates that seagrass in the Bahamas may contain 19.2% to 26.3% of all the carbon stored in seagrass meadows on Earth.

Yet seagrass meadows are rapidly disappearing, with over 92% of meadows in the UK gone, according to the World Wildlife Fund. Scientists are collecting seeds and trying to grow new seagrass meadows through restoration projects. This new discovery offers optimism and proves the importance of the ocean for healing.

The sharks led us to the seagrass ecosystem in the Bahamas, which we now know is likely the most significant blue carbon sink(蓝色碳汇) on the planet. What this discovery shows us is that ocean exploration and research are essential for a healthy future. The untapped potential of the ocean is limitless. These meadows can be protected and can be replicated (复制,仿制), offering hope for climate change around the globe.

    32. Why were tiger sharks chosen as research tools?

    A. They are more flexible than other sea animals.

    B. They can quickly adjust themselves to the deep sea.

    C. They have a strong connection with seagrass ecosystems.

    D. They can be easily equipped with experimental devices.

    33. What are the numbers in paragraph 3 mainly about?

    A. The decline of global seagrass meadows.

    B. The impact of climate change on sea life.

    C. The rapid increase in the amount of carbon on Earth.

    D. The potential value of the world’s largest seagrass ecosystem.

    34. What are scientists doing to protect seagrass?

    A. Planting more seagrass meadows.

    B. Developing new technology to collect seeds.

    C. Mapping the distribution of seagrass meadows.

    D. Encouraging people to join in restoration projects.

    35. Which could be the best title for the text?

    A. The New Way of Removing Carbon

    B. The Significance of Ocean Exploration

    C. A New Discovery: World’s Largest Seagrass Meadow

    D. Tiger Sharks: Scientists’ Essential Helper to Study Climate

In any survey of self-made millionaires, you’re likely to notice the key to their success is that they never stop learning. So how does one build a lifelong learning mindset?

36   Seek out information that may be contrary to what you believe. Expand your horizons. Challenge yourself to find a better way. You will find a way around barriers!

Turn mistakes into opportunities. The practice of learning from mistakes is one of the best lifelong learning skills anyone can master.    37   They show us better way to think and work. They also provide insights into hidden knowledge and awareness.

Adopt a growth mindset. A mindset that is in line with how our brains really works really helps. Individuals with a fixed mindset believe their intelligence and talents are fixed.   38    People with a growth mindset believe they can improve themselves through practice.

Establish goals. What do you want to learn? When do you want to learn it? Every year set goals for yourself on skills and knowledge you want to acquire.   39   Besides, I always have the daily goal of learning something new whether through reading or by talking to other people.

Avoid stress. As stress increases, the body releases chemicals to cause a fear response. This creates an environment in which a person simply can’t focus or work, let alone learn. Keep life relaxed and learning will follow.   40

There are many other tips for successfully creating a learning plan, but those don’t have a fighting chance if your mindset is passive.

    B. Challenge conventional thinking.

    C. This means having the end clearly in mind.

    D. They don’t think they can improve with efforts.

    阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Maria and Peter lived in a coastal city. The greatest pleasure in summer for them was to swim at their local beach after school. But one day they started to lose their enthusiasm for swimming in the waters. More often than not they would find plastic bags thrown on the beach. Worse still, as they swam in the water, some plastic bags would float around them and even stick to their legs when they walked to the shore.

They were upset and decided something needed to be done to stop the beautiful sea becoming consumed by waste. One weekend, Maria and Peter brought a big bag to the beach and determined to clean it up. Sweat streamed down from their forehead while they bent down and picked up the plastic bags. To their disappointment, after a day’s hard work, there were still many plastic bags lying on the beach or floating in the water. Going home with aching legs and arms, Maria and Peter were almost defeated by a strong sense of failure.

That night over dinner with their parents, the pair ale silently. Noticing their low spirits, Mother asked gently, “You two looked so down. What happened?”Exchanging glances with Peter, Maria replied in a low voice, “It’s those annoying plastic bags. We tried to clean up but it was just impossible.”Understanding the pair’s disappointment, their father patted them on the back and comforted,” Well, it’s really hard for just two of you to fix such a big problem.”“Just two of us.” complained Maria and Peter, looking at each other. Suddenly, an idea lashed through their minds, their eyes shining with excitement.“Yes, that’s the point! We should make more people aware of the problem and encourage them to take action!” the pair said in chorus.
