In 1959, when Jean Harper was in the third grade, her teacher asked them to write a report on what they wanted to be when they grew up. She poured her heart into her report and expressed her dream of becoming an airline pilot. Her paper came back with an "F" on it. The teacher told her it was a "fairy tale". Jean was completely disappointed. As the years went by, Jean was beaten down by the discouragement, "Girls can’t become airline pilots; never have, never will. You’re crazy. " Finally, Jean gave up.

Shyness can be an unhappy feeling. But the good news is, you’re not alone. Scientists say that more than 40 percent of teenagers and adults consider themselves shy. Shyness is feeling a little nervous or as if you want to hide when you’re around other people or in a new situation.
Scientists say genes(基因), life experiences, and environment can influence whether a person is shy or not. For example, in some families, everybody seems to be shy.
▲ Well, being shy may cause you to avoid or miss opportunities you would enjoy.
How do people overcome(克服) shyness? This is what Gilbert tells us. "When I started off trying to get over being shy, I decided to do little steps at a time, including practicing smiling and saying hi to people. And it worked for me."
But shyness is not the kind of thing that most people can get over overnight. Overcoming shyness takes time and needs practice.
Here are some tips given by scientists.
Think of what to talk about before you leave home. Prepare things to talk about before you’re in a social situation. For example, if you know your classmates are interested in an upcoming event, learn about it so you can join in the conversations.
Let people know you’re shy. If you’re shy, just show it. Instead of letting people guess, tell them the truth. Explain that you are shy and feel nervous but enjoy talking to people.
Make things easy for the other person. Remember you’re not the only shy person around.Do what you think might help others feel good —for example, say hello or smile.
Pick one social skill to practice at a time. Start simply. For example, smile or be the first person to say hi. Choose skills you feel comfortable enough with to practice for a day, a week, a month, or even a year.

I often miss the bamboo trees behind my old house. When I was a child, I usually went there and sat down. On the one hand, I enjoyed the beautiful sight. On the other hand, I was interested in watching the bamboo trees bend under the pressure of the wind and return softly to their position after the wind stopped.
As I grow up, the bamboo trees’ character always shows up in my mind.Usually, we also meet the situation just like bamboo trees, don’t we? If so, what should we do?
Life is a mixture of good times and bad times, happy moments and unhappy moments. If we are experiencing one of those bad times or unhappy moments, we should try our best not to let the situation break us. We should bend but not break, just like the bamboo trees. With hope for a better tomorrow or a better situation, we begin to believe that things may not be as bad as they seem to be. Difficult situations may be easier to deal with if the result is worth having.
When I think about the bamboo trees’ character, the word "resilience" usually comes to my mind, too. If the word is used to describe a person, it means one can stay strong after a difficult situation.
So, if such an experience happens to you next time, please show resilience like the bamboo trees: bend, but don’t break!
