Why are some people more successful than others? Why do some people make more money, live happier lives and achieve much more in the same number of years than most people?
Over the years, I have read thousands of books and articles on the subjects of success and achievement. It seems that the reasons for those achievements have been discussed for more than two thousand years, in every way. But one thing that most experts agree on is self-discipline (自律).
Some years ago, I attended a meeting in New York. I happened to meet a gentleman. His name was Kopmcyer. He was famous in the field of success and achievement. He had written four books, and each of them had 250 success principles (原则).He had developed these during more than 50 years of research and study. I had read all of his books more than once.
Luckily, I had a chance to talk with him. I asked him a question that many people would ask, "Of all the one thousand success principles you have discovered, which is the most important?”
He smiled at me as if he had been asked this question many times, and replied without thinking twice, "There are 999 different success principles, but without self-discipline, none of them work." He went on, saying, "Many years ago, Thomas Huxley said the most important success principle is, ' Do what you should do, when you should do it, whether you feel like it or not.' ”
Self-discipline is magic because it opens all doors for you, and makes everything else possible.

In order to show that showering isn’t a big deal, an American hasn’t taken a shower for 12 years. Instead, he sprays (喷洒) himself with something special that is said to have kept him clean over the years.
Dave Whitlock, a chemical engineer, thinks no fact can show that bathing is a healthy practice. “I haven’t taken a shower for 12 years, ” he says. “In fact, the chemical in our soap have killed all the friendly bacteria that live on our skin when we use it. ”
For a long time, many people haven’t realized skin bacteria are important and helpful to the body. Although Whitlock isn’t a biologist, he has tried his best to invent a kind of spray called “Mother Dirt” with friendly bacteria. According to Whitlock, the bacteria in the spray can take in something dirty on our skin and produce a kind of chemical which is good for our body.
Now the spray is being produced in a company which Whitlock has helped to set up. The spray has no smell and feels just like water. It can be sprayed all over the skin twice a day to avoid showering. And for those who really enjoy showering, the company is planning to develop a kind of special shower gel (沐浴露) with friendly bacteria.

Roberta, Peter and Phyllis lived in a large house in London. Father worked hard in a government office. He was never angry and always ready for a game. Mother was almost at home, ready to play with the children, and read to them, and help them do their home—lessons.
These three lucky children always had everything they needed: pretty clothes, good fires, a lovely playroom and a dog called James. They had a happy life, but they did not know how happy till the pretty life in the large house was over.
Peter had a toy engine and it broke. After dinner, Peter showed Father the engine. Father looked it over and promised to do it on Saturday.
At that moment two men came to see Father. Minutes passed. Father’s voice came out from the study, loud and angry.
More time passed. Then Mother came in and said, “Father’s been called away— on business.”
A week after their father went away, their mother said, “Now, we’re going to move to the country. A pretty little white house, called Three Chimneys. ”
The family started packing: clothes, plates, candles and also tables and chairs. “We seem to be taking all the ugly things,” said Roberta.
“We’re taking the useful ones,” said Mother. “We’ve got to play at being poor for a bit.”
Peter said joyously, “I do like moving! I wish we moved once a month.” Mother laughed and said, “I don’t like moving!”
As she turned away, Roberta saw her face. She never forgot it.
“Oh, Mother,” she whispered, “how I love you! You are brave enough to laugh when you’re feeling like that! ”
Then they took a train to Three Chimneys. No one knew how long they had been in the train when Mother woke them up.
They stood in the cold night air on the dark platform. At that moment they didn’t know how important the station and the trains would become to them. They didn’t know they were going to be the railway children.

You don’t know me unless you read a book called The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Huck’s my name, Huckleberry Finn. That book ends like this: my best friend, Tom Sawyer, and I found $12,000 in gold in a cave. We became rich. We got $6,000 each.
My mother died long ago and then my dad, Pap, disappeared. He was always drunk and he often beat me. Then a kind old lady called Widow Douglas took me into her home to live. She gave me a bed to sleep in and bought new clothes for me. She read stories to me and taught me how to eat at a table. She sent me to school every day.
I hated those new clothes. I missed my old life. I put on my old clothes and ran away and was free and happy, but Tom Sawyer found me and said that if I wanted to join his club, I would have to return to live with the widow. For this reason, I returned to live with her.
The months passed and winter came. The weather got cold. One morning I woke up and there was snow on the ground. On my way to school I saw some footprints outside the widow’s house. My heart jumped. Pap!
“He’s heard about my money,” I thought. “And he wants it! ”
When I lit my candle and went up to my room that night, there sat Pap—his own self! I expected to be scared of him now, but I wasn’t. I stood looking at him; he set there—looking at me.
Pap was nearly fifty years old. His black hair was long and uncombed and dirty. He had allowed hair to grow on his face, which was ghostly white. Just looking at the ugly white skin made me feel sick. His clothes? —dirty and torn. His feet showed through large holes in his shoes. His hat was on the floor—an old black hat with a large hole in it.

Everyone has experienced a twist of fate at some time. Actor Hu Ge is no different. In fact, his story is more amazing than most.
Hu was once a shy boy, and rarely spoke. To help him become more sociable, his parents sent him to an art troupe. At that time, Hu never thought he would have a career on stage or in front of the cameras.
Instead of getting confidence in acting, Hu became very interested in directing. As the national college entrance examination approached, Hu chose to study directing at the Central Academy of Drama in Beijing. Hu got a high mark.Hu had to decide whether to be a director or an actor. He followed his dream and prepared to go to Beijing. But when the teacher told him many great directors had been actors, Hu hesitated(犹豫).He finally stayed in his hometown to study performing arts. He was given a chance to take the lead role .
Hu Ge has been considered as Li Xiaoyao, a character that people remembered from the fantasy series based on a popular computer game of the same title. The 22-year-old man breathed life into main character Li Xiaoyao, and he proved himself to be one of the most promising stars . But few people, including Hu himself expected him to be an actor.

Hu’s pretty face was only an advantage of his success, and the scar troubled him for a long time.
But now, Hu has become more confident. “If I myself am not troubled by it, no one else will care. I have to move past it. Otherwise, how can I continue my acting career?” he said. Once again, God seems to have put a homeless person in my path. Lately, I have regularly come into contact with people that I just can’t ignore .
His name is Mark and I was surprised to hear that he is only three years older than me. He looks so much older! He was on the counter, asking for money. I parked my car and plonked(砰地放下) myself down on the curb(路边) to talk. People were driving by and looking at us, but I didn’t care.
He told me about his life. How much of his story I believe, I don’t know. He told me he was dying----that part I believe, for he could hardly walk and had trouble catching his breath.
I asked what I could do to help him. He said all he wanted was a slice of pizza. I gave him $3, the only cash I had . He said he wanted to go to get the food himself, but he was stopped from the shopping center for begging. I said I would get it for him and asked if he wanted something to drink .
Then he asked for a(n) ride to the trail in the woods where he had his tent. Usually I don’t give rides to strangers, but this was just up the street, and quite honestly he had no physical threat to me. When we parted, he held my hand for a long time and we just looked at each other wordlessly for a few moments.
At that time, he wasn’t a homeless man and I wasn’t a sufferer .We became just two souls making a human connection I don’t know if I will ever see him again, but I know I will never forget him. God bless you, Mark, and your beautiful blue eyes and gentle soul.

Have you ever wondered why birds sing? Maybe you thought that they were just happy. After all, you probably sing or whistle when you are happy.
Some scientists believe that birds do sing some of the time just because they are happy. However, they sing most of the time for a very different reason. Their singing is actually a warning to other birds to stay out of their territory.
Do you know what a ‘territory’ is? A territory is an area that an animal, usually the male, claims as its own. Only he and his family are welcome there. No other families of the same species are welcome. Your yard and house are your territory where only your family and friends are welcome. If a stranger should enter your territory and threaten you, you might shout. Probably this would be enough to frighten him away.
If so, you have actually scared the stranger away without having to fight him. A bird does the same thing. But he expects an outsider almost any time, especially at nesting(筑巢)season. So he is screaming all the time, whether he can see an outsider or not. This screaming is what we call a bird’s song, and it is usually enough to keep an outsider away.
Birds sing loudest in the spring when they are trying to attract a mate and warn others not to enter the territory of theirs.
You can see that birds have a language of their own. Most of it has to do with attracting mates and setting up territories.
( )12. Some scientists believe that most of the time bird’s singing is actually________.
A. an expression of happiness B. a way of warning
C. an expression of anger D. a way of greeting
( )13.What does the underlined word “territory’’ mean?
A. A place where families of other species are not accepted
B. A place where a bird may shout at the top of its voice
C. An area for which birds fight against each other
D. An area which a bird considers to be its own
( )14. Why do birds keep on singing at nesting season?
A. Because they want to invite more friends
B. Because their singing helps frighten outsiders away
C. Because they want to find outsiders around
D. Because their singing helps get rid of their fears
( )15. How does the writer explain bird’s singing?
A. By comparing birds with human beings B. By reporting experiment results
C. By describing birds’ daily life D. By telling a bird’s story

Go green at school
Hi, guys,
Isn’t it pleasant to study in an environmentally friendly school? To develop a green lifestyle, we students can go green at school in smaller ways.
On one hand, we should save resources. First, we should save paper. we can reuse the textbooks and use both sides of the paper. Second, we should save water. We can take short showers and reuse water. Third, we are supposed to save electricity. We can turn off the light when we leave from the classroom. Also, we needn't turn on all the lights if enough. On the other hand, we should reduce pollution. We can take care of the trees and flowers, choose the public transport and use the cloth bags instead of plastic bags. We should develop a green lifestyle, we can do more exercise and watch less TV. If we take good care of our earth today, it will be more beautiful tomorrow.
That’s all. Thank you!

These letters, we realized, had to be shared. And so 12 we offer one of them to you.

China Railway Corp (CRC) is fully prepared to sell a full supply of high -speed railway technology. The company said selling of railway technology and building railways for other countries are going very well, and progress is being made in a number of countries. We have a major advantage. We are able to sell whole railway technology. It isn't very good to buy some technology from one country and other technology from another.
The selling plan for our high-speed railway technology will follow the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road (一带一路).

27. Why hasn’t Whitlock taken a shower for 12 years?
A. Because he hates showering.
B. Because he wants to prove his idea.
C. Because there aren’t any friendly bacteria on his skin.
D. Because he is too busy with his work.
28. Which is TRUE about the spray that was invented by Whitlock?
A. It can help to keep the skin clean and healthy.

That’s all. Thank you!
